All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation
What tenancy length do I need?
Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
Should I stay in catered student accommodation?
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
What is a guarantor and do I need one?
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
What bills will my rent include?
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
What is purpose-built student accommodation?
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Will my student accommodation be furnished?
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

Roman House is one of the best student accommodations I have stayed in throughout my uni experience. The building comes with a lot of added features such as a gym, exercise studio, study space, cinema/games room, social room outdoor courtyard and indoor bike storage. The building is always clean and presentable and has pleasant décor. The management is absolutely fantastic! They are so friendly and are always happy to help and make your stay as comfortable as possible. The en-suite room is spacious and comes with more than enough storage. The shared kitchen comes with lots of cupboards and two fridge-freezers (they do not however come with a cutlery draw so bare that in mind!), the kitchen also comes with a smart tv which a nice added bonus. The accommodation is located right behind Newcastle central station so the noise of the trains 24 hours a day is a downside but you do get used to it. Overall I rate this accommodation 5 stars and I have re-booked next year with my friend! :)
staff are always helpful and friendly Building always spotless Facilities are great and great value for money
It is a good experience to live here.
Overall pretty good, the studio is my little sweet home. Not so much noise often either from other tenants, just the pipe in early morning is making some loud noises for a while. Location convenient for buying groceries and taking a walk by the river side, but it’s a bit far way from Newcastle university main campus.
In a good place for the city just a bit of a walk.for some of the university places but is very good for the price
I like roman house very much, I am very comfortable here, the staff are very friendly and the apartment is in a nice environment.
Could do with a couple more washers apart from that 👍
Really good place, very good equipment for sport and nice staff !
The staff are always so helpful, the rooms are spacious with loads of storage. To have a gym, workspace and games room in one area have been so great. I feel able to have places to study and chill out
Been here for 3 years no complaints it's great!!
Amazing staff always polite, freindly and always able to help. The value for money is excelent and the rooms and bathrooms are amazing. Would 100% recomend to anyone 1st 2nd or 3rd year student.
Very good place to stay for a student and accessible.
Great accommodation but could be cleaner when first moving into the flat. Management were quick to respond when there was any issue.
Really good price per week for the location and quality. Nothing particularly amazing about it, but for what you’re paying it’s all you need. Staff are amiable, but don’t go out of their way to help, answer queries, etc. Never had any problems with maintenance, and putting a request for repairs in was always quick. It’s let down massively by the fact it doesn’t have 24hr security or staff presence, so if you’re locked out your options are limited and you could be waiting hours for the recover/maintenance guy to come and let you back in. Room space and kitchen space is good enough, cleanliness is largely up to your own/flat mates’ standards. It’s pretty good, would get a studio next time.
Enjoying living here! Would love to have a scale and some resistance bands at the gym
Amazing space, in a great location, with a very secure building. Staff are super friendly and always approachable.
Hi, Thank you for your lovely review. i will be sure to pass on your kind works to the team.
All of the staff are amazing, so friendly and will help with everything they can. John the maintenance man goes above and beyond and never fails to make my flat laugh and give us advice. We also appreciate the cleaner who keeps the building looking amazing. and the reception team are so friendly, easy to talk to and willing to help with any issues you have.
Hi There, Thank you so much for your great review. I will be sure to pass on your kind words to the team. Kind Regards , Toni
Roman House has been an amazing place to live. I have met some lovely people in my flat and in the building. The standard and quality of the rooms is impeccable and you get your moneys worth and even more to be honest. I love my en-suite as i have my own space and a nice comfy bed and a clean bathroom. The desk and work space is also one of my favourite aspects of my room as I have plenty of room for studying and it is easy to organize all my files and work. The design and layout of the rooms and kitchen were very well thought out and give the accommodation a clean and modern atmosphere. The accommodation team are lovely and have been so supportive through the pandemic and you can tell they try the best to make this the best experience possible for us which is really lovely. John, the maintenance man, is extremely friendly and always willing to help. He never fails to make me and my flatmates laugh and is lovely to chat to. We really appreciate everything he does for us.
Excellent accommodation in the perfect location for students. Worth the money. Staffs are very friendly and helpful.
Thank you for your lovely review. we are pleased you enjoyed your stay with us.
The social spaces are low because I actually haven’t had a chance to use any of them because of COVID-19, but, they’re really pretty from what I can see of them. The people are lovely, staff and residents, and the environment is so welcoming. Out of all the accommodations I’ve been at, Roman House has been my favourite.
Didn’t got much to socialise and even not much events were there but I’ve herd that on other sites, they conducted events.
The staff at Roman House have always been so lovely and positive regardless of the restricting circumstances, organising fun and interactive events that create a community-like experience even though some of us live alone/are isolating. They’ve taken excellent measures to reduce the spread of the virus and have been very understanding and professional when it came to dealing with the occasional complaint (teenagers in lockdown isn’t the easiest to manage I’m sure). This is my first time living away from my family and I’m glad I settled for such quality as the studios are spacious and the storage is plentiful. On top of that, all the amenities are kept in pristine condition. I really have little to negatively say about my time at Roman House other than the fact that this is my last year and won’t be able to come back!
Great value for money. Very friendly staff
Thank you for your lovely review regarding the team! We will be sure to pass your comments on!
The most beautiful and comfortable place to live in !! I would definitely recommend this place and the staff is really friendly and helpful so glad I booked my place here
Hi, Thank you for taking the time to leave such a lovely review! We are pleased to hear you have enjoyed your stay with us.
Fantastic and friendly staff extremely helpful Events are a good way of getting to meet people Good value for money modern accommodation, have loved living here
Very friendly staff however the amount of money issues is horrendous, if you book a bog standard room with no deals you’re probably fine however if you’ve booked them through any of their deals or price cuts they never take the discounts off! and lie through their teeth when you’re trying to sort it out!! they’re currently owing me nearly £1000!!!!! this causes so much uneeded anxiety and im having to pay out my own pocket since the student finance can’t cover the cost without the discounts, which i thought would’ve been taken off pretty early on in the tendancy but they still haven’t! also, the accommodation is right next to a casino - so on a regular basis there’s someone kicking off late at night practically right outside the accommodation which the casino do nothing about and it often keeps me awake which isn’t ideal for my 9am starts, in some of these cases the police have had to get involved and taken these types of people away and damage has been done like smashed windows
