All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation
What tenancy length do I need?
Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
Should I stay in catered student accommodation?
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
What is a guarantor and do I need one?
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
What bills will my rent include?
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
What is purpose-built student accommodation?
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Will my student accommodation be furnished?
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

Staying in Beckley point takes off a lot of load from my back, I feel so safe here and the staff is so helpful and respectful
After having lived here for three years. My experience has been very pleasant. The staff are very friendly and very patient at all times, any issues I’ve had over the years have been solved by simply coming down to reception and voicing my issue. The staff have made me feel welcome and are always working around the building to fix any servicing issues and keep the building up to the standard it needs to be at and even further. Building is cleaned on a weekly regular basis by a house keeper and at nights the building is looked after by the night shift staff who go around the building from the top floor to the bottom making sure everything is running smooth, clean, and well maintained. Been a pleasant and enjoyable experience.
Close to uni and right in the middle of town , good value for money and lush communal spaces.
staff are amazing and very helpful, very close to the uni which is very convenient. Close to the town. Good value for money. Great view from sky lounge.
Love beckley point. been here for three years felt like Home couldn’t have wished for a better accommodation.
During my stay at Beckley, I experienced no issues whatsoever. The location is ideal, as it is within walking distance of both the campus and the city center. The staff were always helpful if I had any problems or queries.
Cracking place to be, right over the road from campus is great, and much better quality and value than most of the uni accomodation. Staff are always friendly, especially the students working and the Dog. Social spaces are a great asset too.
As an international student, my top priority was finding safe, convenient student housing near campus with approachable and supportive staff that I could easily communicate with. Fortunately, Beckley Point ticks all those boxes, providing a comfortable and hassle-free living experience. Beckley Point is well-equipped to cater to the diverse needs of its student residents. The accommodations are thoughtfully designed, with each room featuring the essential furnishings and amenities required for productive studying and relaxation. But Beckley Point goes above and beyond the basics, offering an outstanding selection of on-site facilities to truly enhance the student experience. Throughout the building, there are numerous inviting common spaces, such as a cinema and game room, where students can socialize, unwind, and build a strong sense of community. Overall, I most certainly recommend Beckley Point. Its advantageous location near the university campus, well-appointed accommodation, a
I love the reception and homey feeling they give me they care about me and very safety
The most attentive staff and amazing facilities. Will always help when you need it.
I absolutely LOVE living in Beckley Point, the facilities are always available and functional. The staff are fantastic, really easy to talk to and always willing to help. All round an amazing experience and would recommend to anyone.
I love Beckley, and Nick is my best friend.
"Beckley Point is hands down the best student accommodation I've ever experienced! From the moment I walked in, I was greeted with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The facilities are top-notch, with modern amenities that make student life so much more convenient. The rooms are spacious, well-furnished, and designed for both comfort and productivity. The staff goes above and beyond to ensure that every resident feels at home and supported throughout their stay. Plus, the location couldn't be better - right in the heart of the city, with easy access to everything you could possibly need. If you're looking for the perfect place to live during your university years, look no further than Beckley Point. You won't be disappointed!"
Beckley Point is very central, everything you need is on average a 5 minute walk. Great social areas which gives the opportunity have a great your social life in uni. Would definitely book Be key again
Lived in Beckley for 2 years now and have loved it! Very friendly staff, social areas such as the UG are great and maintenance logs are sorted very quickly! Would definitely recommend :)
Beckley point is honestly one the best accommodations in the Plymouth area where they provide great friendly entertainment and environments to allow students to feel comfortable in their own settings and allow themselves to make themselves feel at home and secure. With there exceptional events to allow students to feel apart of day such as their breakfast, movie nights, quiz nights and surveys. They also provide cuddle times with beau the dog to help with mental health as well as just a time spending. I would say beckley point is an exceptional example of a perfect student accommodation would recommend to anyone!
My Accomodation Beckley Point, in Plymouth is fantastic. The stunning views and welcoming atmosphere make living away from home so much easier. The staff are friendly and accommodating, and the central location is so convenient for doing anything and a 2minute walk to university. Highly recommended staying here for anyone studying in Plymouth!
Beckley Point offers fantastic student accommodation with great perks. As an international student, it's a home away from home with an inviting atmosphere and cosy amenities. That's why I chose to stay here for the full three years of my degree. The social spaces available for booking are ideal for hosting gatherings and connecting with fellow residents. The staff are always friendly and quick to assist, making living here a breeze. With 24/7 security, residents can feel safe and secure at all times. The value for money is excellent, especially considering the variety of events organised for residents, such as breakfast mornings. Choosing Beckley Point has been a smart decision, and I highly recommend it to any student looking for a comfortable and enjoyable living experience.
I have loved living here. I was able to rebook my room for the full three years of my course, and have been able to chose a studio meaning i don’t have to share with others.
Been staying here for two years now and love it. Staff are super friendly and always happy to help plus the social areas are amazing
Beckley is a great accommodation, it is like living in a hotel! It has great views and amazing social and study spaces! I would highly suggest this accommodation if you are studying in Plymouth!
Silverfish infestation I’ve complained about 3 times, each time being told they’d take action but never have and instead I’ve had to buy my own silverfish traps. Screaming water pipes and lifts are often broken. Social areas are kept clean and overall are nice areas.
Beckley point was a wonderful place to live, I highly recommend it to students. Staff were lovely and friendly.
I think overall it is a decent place to stay. The main positives would be that it is central to the university and all other amenities and the decor is very modern. Additionally, you have your own bathroom so hygiene is easier to keep on top of. However, the price is very high (mine was £573.75 p/m) and some of the staff are quite rude/brittle when asking for help or even making conversation. Additionally, the fact you have to pay to use the washing machines and tumble dryers is ridiculous due to the rent already being so high. Another point is that the rooms are not very spacious for the amount of money you spend. Lastly, the cleaners only clean the communal areas and not the actual flats unless you’ve moved out which I think is silly, again, due to the prices being paid. Overall, it has pros and cons but definitely things to work on.
It is a lovely place to stay with amazing views all year round! The staff are lovely and hold great events throughout the year such as pizza and a pint night and breakfast mornings. Definitely recommend this accommodation to new students and current university students as you can live here for however long your course is.
It was a lovely stay and the staff are phenomenal
The staff are so friendly and the rooms are beautiful! The views are to die for especially during summer. So many events (such as pizza and a pint) are held here too. An amazing place to stay!
Good location, Friendly staff, Good facilities
Very happy with all the facilities and rooms.
The lifts are shockingly bad. I’ve waited 20 minutes for one for it to stop on every floor. If you live near the top you can fell the building move in the wind. It’s really nauseating after a while, they could have designed it a bit better.
Been living here for 2 years and it’s been great! Reception is very welcoming and very helpful. The room is spacious and very cozy. Also, a great location as it is very close to campus and in the city center .
Amazing accommodation! Rooms are a good size and facilities provided here are top tier! Best bit is the location, very close to big supermarkets and most importantly, the Uni! Staff are very helpful and overall, the accompanying is pretty organised.
I’ve been here since September and love living here. Great facilities and the staff are always lovely. Any problems are resolved quickly.
Great facilities, great location and friendly staff.
I’m so happy living here! The staff are so friendly and the building is amazing. From study areas, to the games room, to the cinema room and even the sky lounge ... you can never be bored! I’ve met the most amazing people and live in such a safe area! I have recommended here to a few of my friends and will continue to do so:)
When I arrived at Beckley point my flat was a state! It was filthy!! From previous floods I also had a lot of water damage in my flat. The location is ideal though
Love the place :) even during Covid-19 the staff have been very helpful and attentive to maintenance or any other queries I might of had. Great social spaces all very modern! Just what a students needs.
No cleaning staff have ever entered this flat. Staff walk in without notice. Good social spaces although obviously reduced use due to covid
Had an absolute blast the past two years. Even with covid around, the staff have been caring and want to make sure everyone is safe within the building. I always feel safe within the building and would recommend Beckley Point to new students at Plymouth University. The placement is perfect literally across the road from the uni and supermarkets and less than a 5-minute walk to the train station. Good value for money for what you get - 2 student social spaces, games room, study rooms and also a cinema room. The staff are lovely and offer support and help if you need it. Couldn't ask for more really!
I have lived at beckley point for 2 years now and I absolutely love a lot of things about it. The privacy of having your own space is so much better than sharing and the facilities are amazing - a cinema room, big hosting kitchens, gaming room and study spaces with a sky lounge overlooking the sea. Wayne (the manager) is always here to help with any issues I have and is so helpful and always trying to make the experience the best (can be hard in a pandemic). There are many free gifts eg pancakes for pancake day, little goodie bags and competitions for pizzas and vouchers. I definitely feel I made the right choice choosing beckley point.
I’ve stayed at Beckley for 2 years now and I’m glad I stayed rather than moving into a student house. Amazing location and great social spaces which are kept clean. The rooms are small but most accommodations in Plymouth are small. I do agree with some of the other reviews about bad wifi and the pipes screaming when someone has a shower/runs their tap which is annoying. The shower drains get clogged easily too. However I do feel safe here and also feel that broken things get fixed very quickly which is so important. Some of the staff are lovely and will try and sort things the best they can. Sadly the social side has been bad this year solely due to covid but I’m hoping next year will make up for it :)
Great location, probably as close to amenities as any student accommodation. Very approachable staff.
Beckley point is an amazing place to stay and live out your uni experience, the wonderful staff make everyday good. It is a nice and clean building with students at the forefront. I would definitely stay again
Good place, facilities are lush. Room for improvement with some facilities etc but other than that a win. Covid has affected my view on the place but it is nice to live in.
Beckley has been an all-round amazing place to live - especially in the first year. The location is so convenient as everything is so close. The town is a 2-minute walk and the supermarket is even closer than that. University is a 5-minute walk too. I've found the social spaces really helpful. It just gives me a change of scenery from my studio. I have found I can get lots of work done in the study spaces and this is really helping me progress academically. All of the social spaces are very clean. All of the staff have been nothing but helpful. I haven't had many problems, but when I had a problem, they were very quick to sort it out.
I was emailed about this accommodation during College and I blindly booked my room when I knew I was going to Plymouth College Of Art. I am super glad that I did choose this place. The staff are really friendly and nice, it's always super clean and the social spaces and entertainment provided by the company are top-notch. The WiFi is amazing as well! I do experience some slight issues from time to time but that can just be down to bad weather or it needs to be down for it to be fixed. The neighbours in the building are... alright. I am able to make quick chat with them easily but a lot of them don't follow the rules that the staff have given. Nonetheless, I think this place is worth it if you are looking for a working space that you know you can feel safe in.
This building is a lovely modern place to live. The views from the sky Lounge emphasise how amazing Plymouth is to live. The staff are friendly and go out of their way to help you if you have a problem. I feel safe and secure living in this building and I would highly recommend it to other students who study in Plymouth.
The accommodation is maintained very efficiently, supporting students in their needs whether it may be from a social, mental or physical aspect. The management provide various opportunity for social interaction (pre-COVID) and maintain a healthy interaction on-line when needed during COVID.
A very modern building in the perfect location (not far from the main campus and the city centre) with some amazing views of the seafront from the sky lounge! The staff are friendly and always happy to help making it a safe and comforting place to live:)
My experience in Beckley has been very unique. With the on-going Covid pandemic, it has been very difficult to make friends and meet new people. The majority of the staff are friendly and helpful except the night staff who are very rude, aggressive and should not be working in an environment with students and young people!
Really good location with very good communal facilities staff are friendly and nice too, WiFi is not great or TVs, piping is a bit odd to drainage issues regularly!! But overall v pleasant
Staff Helpful and Understanding, always there to make sure you are looked after and any issues they are always welcome to help.
Really nice friendly staff close to the uni, it has a generally friendly feeling and it is still possible to book study rooms even with Covid
Beckley is located in a great area, super close to the uni, city centre & has a Tesco right next door! The social spaces are great, I love the sky lounge
I have stayed at this accommodation for 3years now in different rooms and the experience was excellent. 1st year I was in a 4 person flat with shared kitchen and an ensuite bedroom. 2nd and 3rd year, I stayed in a 2 person flat by myself and everything has been excellent. I needed something to be fixed this academic year and they came and fixed it quickly. The staff go above and beyond. The facilities are excellent and in the 3 years of staying there the WIFI has only been problematic once. It is in a great location in the city centre, near the mall, opposite the university and near supermarkets.
Beckley Point is in the centre of Plymouth, with all of the city's main attractions within walking distance. The social spaces are amazing, with plenty of study spaces, and even a cinema and games room! The views are amazing too, especially from the sky lounge.
Really nice social spaces, friendly staff but TSHC could’ve been more generous with the their covid response. Can’t beat the view though, rooms are really modern and I’ve really enjoyed my time here!!
You won’t get a nicer, more modern student accommodation, the rooms are the best I’ve ever seen with little to no price difference with other accommodations. The location is perfect and the views from anywhere in the building insane. The social spaces really do make a difference, with plenty of them and the cinema room and pools and ping pong tables there’s always a chance to be social or do something
Beckley Point has amazing social areas such as a cinema room and a sky lounge with amazing views. The study rooms are major useful if you would like a different scenery to study in. The studios are small but compact and has everything you need in them! Even though you can find other cheaper accommodation, they most likely won’t have the added ons like the social areas and study rooms. The building is right opposite the University and a short walk to the Barbican and the hoe with Tesco’s right next to it and Sainsbury’s opposite. It could not be in a better location. The cleanliness in common areas has been great especially due to Covid.
Staff are super helpful and there is always someone around to help you or listen to any concerns. The common areas are kept clean and tidy and are great for socialising. It’s just across the road from the university and is in very close proximity to shops as well so it’s in a brilliant location. The sky lounge has some amazing views, as well as rooms higher up in the building. Overall it’s a great place to live.
I have stayed in Beckley point since 2019 and it has been the most wonderful student accommodation. Even during the pandemic, having stayed at Beckley, the team on site made sure that the hygiene was maintained and arranged many virtual events. Beckley Point is the best!
So close to the uni, such a nice building and the rooms are well laid out with a lot of storage
This is my second year living here - it’s in a great location close to Uni, the town centre and the sea! Beckley has always been great and the staff can’t do enough to always help you out and make your experience living here amazing!
I’ve lived here for 3 years now and loved every minute of it! The staff are very friendly and welcoming, the booking and rebooking process is super easy and the location is perfect with uni being across the road and supermarkets in close proximity. I would 100% recommend Beckley Point to any student studying in Plymouth!
I will be living here throughout my whole university course! Location could not be any better , across the road from uni, right in the middle of the city and a short walk to the sea. Staff are lovely and you won’t find accommodation with better facilities.
Ideal location and brilliant common areas. Rebooked again for next year!
Beckley Point has amazing social spaces like study spaces, common rooms, sky lounge, a gaming room and a cinema room. This is probably always fun, but especially during lockdown it has been so refreshing and nice to always have something to do and not be locked in your room. I book the cinema room with my flatmates and we have loads of fun. Every accommodation has their issues but I find that the staff at Beckley takes care of the issues that occur in a timely manner.
I absolutely loved living in Beckley Point in my first and second years of uni! The staff are so friendly and there’s such a good vibe throughout the whole building - thanks to al the various social events such as breakfast mornings and ‘Beckleyfest’ I’ve made so many life-long friends! I can’t imagine having lived my most important and exciting years anywhere else 💗
Lived here for two years. Staff were always welcoming and friendly. The communal areas were always full of people to chat too but there was also quieter areas if you wanted to study. I lived in a studio, the studio itself was a nice modern open space, and the bathroom was small but functional. Had a nice view from my window! If you ever had issues with maintenance then the staff always responded to these promptly. It was fun to have a cinema room to meet up with friends in and watch a movie. Overall it was a really fun experience and I miss living there! It may seem pricey but in comparison university campus halls (which are priced fairly similarly) you get a lot more for your money!
The WIFI was terrible. I ended up using my data everyday. The rooms are small for the expensive price. However, the cinema room was really nice and the communal spaces are all useful, and the rooms had a lot of plug sockets and USB ports which I found useful. The showers always got clogged (not good if you're a girl with long hair), but the staff are always happy to sort it out for you quickly. It's still annoying though because it happened every month, despite me trying to be careful not to get it clogged. Also, the building always made random loud noises like squeaking pipes or weird random crashes. The staff are very friendly. However, the company that owns the building (The Student Housing Company) are money grabbers. They refused to cancel the last rent instalment due to the COVID-19 crisis, despite students being experiencing financial hardship and getting stressed out. Be careful, they only care about their money and not the mental wellbeing of students.
Covid-19: Considering that the Covid-19 situation has caused stress for people across the world, some people losing jobs to pay their rent, or having to help provide for their family where someone may have became unemployed, The Student Housing Company has shown absolutely no compassion towards their residents. They have caused more stress for us as residents by not giving any information for 4 weeks, for ridiculous offers to be given on a insufficient student portal, to finally give only one accommodation a straight answer of being released from our contracts. This process has taken 6 weeks to get any communication from TSHC, and I don’t doubt that the only reason they have responded is due to the pressure students were forced to put on the company. This will have undoubtably been to try and save their reputation.
I lived at Beckley Point for 2 years and I absolutely loved it! The staff are extremely friendly and the communal areas are amazing too. I made so many friends living here, which I think was due to the events that were hosted like pizza and movie nights in the cinema room and other events in social spaces. I wouldn’t have wanted to live anywhere else whilst at Plymouth Uni.
