The Hall Management team (including both the administrative and cleaning teams) is doing a wonderful job. However, there is always a handful of students who create disruption (by smoking - the smoke enters in our rooms and makes the air unbreathable; by loudly banging the doors at night without any consideration of the sleep of other flatmates) in the living experience of students living in halls of residence. I would like to kindly suggest to enforce the no-smoking policy and put into place of punishable rules such as no noise after 10 pm.

All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation
What tenancy length do I need?
Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
Should I stay in catered student accommodation?
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
What is a guarantor and do I need one?
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
What bills will my rent include?
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
What is purpose-built student accommodation?
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Will my student accommodation be furnished?
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

Overall a good accommodation. It is routinely cleaned, and any issues are solved quickly. Everyone is nice. However, the lighting in the room is not ideal, it is quite dark, I would add some more powerful lighting. Also, the mattresses are not very comfortable. Also, fridge space is a bit limited for everyone.
It was okay, no one socialises and it’s quiet, but it’s clean
John Philipp is located in the perfect spot at campus - a little on the side of all the undergrad accommodation, but in equal 10-15min distance to all lecture rooms, the gyms, sports pitches, swimming pool... Everyone has their own small bathroom and kitchens are shared with 5-7 postgrad students. Super friendly environment!
John Phillips is good for a fresher with lots of facilities and modern furniture and kitchen. However, there are some better value for money options inside the town that are not such luxurious, but they are good for students
Overall I had a good experience in the hall. It is a bit on the expensive side, but being on campus is very convenient and well worth it, especially for being an international student. Met lots of great people!
Sure, here's an improved and more detailed version of the accommodation review: I had a pleasant stay at the accommodation. The facilities were well-maintained, and the overall environment was comfortable and welcoming. The room was clean, spacious, and equipped with all the necessary amenities. The staff were friendly and attentive, making sure all my needs were met promptly. Additionally, the location was convenient, with easy access to nearby attractions and public transport. I would highly recommend this accommodation to others looking for a comfortable and hassle-free experience.
I’ve had a lovely year in JP, bit expensive but probably worth it
It is a comfortable and welcoming place to stay with good access to classes. It is a bit far away from town but for those who want to focus on their study, it can be the best choice, especially postgraduate students.
Disappointing hall, I picked it only because it is on campus and en-suite. Do not recommend student to join this hall with this price.
Overall very good housing for a student. Good location on campus. Very friendly cleaning lady. It is just very costly.
Really like the room as it it not too small and has good size bed. Location is good and can access anywhere within a 10 min walk
The Hall Management team (including both the administrative and cleaning teams) is doing a wonderful job. Good Accomodation, with a wide range of International students. Friendly environment which helps students to socialize with different people and culture along with their studies and eventually building good network.
Overall decent experience with no issues regarding cleanliness or maintenance as it was sorted with prompt timing. Support was easily accessible especially during the times I had left my key at home! I would say there are more ways to be more sociable in this flat but understandable as it's a postgraduate flat so many people are beyond their 'sociable' years. Would recommend to a friend if the prices were slightly lower.
Good halls for postgrads with ideal location.
John Phillips isn't just an accommodation for me, it's a home! From the amazing social life and friendly staff to the comfortable environment, everything feels welcoming and supportive. I made great friends through events and common areas, and the staff were always there to help quickly with a smile. It's the perfect place to relax, socialize, or study – highly recommend!
nice decent place to live on campus
My second home with my lovely flatmates
Overall excellent accommodation. Could do with more social space
Great value for money and great location. The atmosphere within the hall is amazing.
Although this is classed as a postgraduate hall, many undergraduates like myself are placed here. It's a lovely hall and works well being grouped together with Hazlerigg Rutland.
I stayed here for my masters during covid. The rooms are quite small but good enough for what I needed, cleaning service is handy if your flat mates are messy, the year I stayed here I was charged for room cleaning even though we didn't get this service, privacy is minimal at best, random people will just walk into the flat unannounced, the first time I encountered the cleaner, she made me leave the kitchen whilst I was half way through making breakfast, she made my house mate cry over a blocked sink, and you will be reported for having your bike in the flat or anything deemed slightly against the rules. I found this quite amusing that I was actually paying money for all this hassle. We were all treated like complete children and the management was very poor. Location is good as its on campus but you certainly pay the premium for this perk, I would say the only good experience from John Phillips is that I met some lovely people and that made it bearable. I don't recommend living here.
Nice experience overall, a bit pricey.
The accommodation is extremely welcoming and a good second home.
