All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation
What tenancy length do I need?
Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
Should I stay in catered student accommodation?
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
What is a guarantor and do I need one?
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
What bills will my rent include?
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
What is purpose-built student accommodation?
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Will my student accommodation be furnished?
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

Costs alot but its a big room with ensuite, also 10 meals a week included
Thank you for your feedback. We are glad you enjoyed the size of your room and the en-suite facilities :) - Harry
Reasonable value for money, An excellent and safe location with a large range of amenities and close to key facilities. Outstanding customer service, with issues always resolved promptly.Regularly cleaned and Good, comfortable social spaces.
The best thing about Elvyn is the ensuite. It's so convenient having an ensuite, and it's nice to have a proper sized kitchen despite being catered. I like the fact breakfast isn't included as it allows for a fast breakfast in the morning. The food is tolerable. It's very convenient, however it all kind of tastes the same. I also got very bad food poisoning, so it's important to stay away from the fish.
Overall a wonderful place where making friends with your flatmates and everyone else from the Hall is quite easy, as the kitchen area is a perfect place to meet your flatmates and the dinning hall and common room are perfect to meet the rest of the people at the hall.
Overall I had a good time in halls. I think the rooms are spacious enough and are laid out well. The kitchen is great however it might be a good idea to get a deep kitchen clean maybe halfway through the year. I think that the chair in the room is quite uncomfortable, my back and bottom hurt when I sit there for more than an hour which is not ideal when I try to use it for studying. I would try and upgrade the chairs within the rooms. The dining hall is good, the food could be a little better however it is definitely not bad. The common room got closed early on which is unfortunate but it looks to be in good shape now.
Overall the perfect accommodation that I could have chosen, but as the common room was closed there was not really a place to socialize
The accomodation was good. The only negative is that it is expensive.
Lived in Elvyn Richards for 3 years and loved every day of being there. Getting too expensive for what you get in recent years but good hall community. Common room needs updating and quad could do with some furniture- e.g. better benches with tables perhaps?
On the whole, the accommodation is a good choice. I feel that the location is probably the best factors alongside the property management and cleaning service. However, this year, WIFI connection has been an issue consistently throughout the year. Additionally, the social spaces and social experience hasn't been as good this year compared to last.
I’ve really enjoyed my year in Elvyn, since day one I’ve made friends for life and it’s been lovely to call it home
Good location, just hard to get to the other side of campus for example badminton center or powerbase, but lovely accessibility to bus services and perfect common areas, lot of greenery and good seating area, however the common room was barely in use for us.
The hall is overall great, but the food in the canteen is quite poor and the hygiene of the cutleries sometimes is not too great.
Good hall, quite expensive considering the catering is only 10 meals a week. Fairly large room and en-suite.
Amazing accommodation, very spacious rooms with good storage and ensuite. Surrounded by other student accommodations so very social. Catered food could be improved but overall good.
Value for money was good in terms of rooms but the food was point blank awful never worth the money and often left me hungry. Location great central to the library, union and lectures, although if studying something where you have lectures in the design school 25 minute walks. Property management good in general but my toilet blocked on a Friday once and I was told nothing could be done until the following tuesday so had no working toilet for 4 days. Common room was shut for most of the year Becasue some idiot broke the table tennis table why that meant no one could use it after we pay extra to specifically use it who knows.
Too expensive, food quality needs improvement, common room has been out of use the entire year. Staff are friendly and helpful.
I really enjoyed Elvyn, but just wish there was more social opportunities after freshers. We also unfortunately have not had a common room this year, The rooms are good size and the bathrooms are perfect, if you have a maintenance problem it's normally sorted within 24 hours. Very very good kitchen for being catered 5 days a week, which was a huge plus. If I was to redo first year, I think I would've lived in a more sociable hall but I absolutely loved it here and made life long friends.
My experience in Elvyn Richard’s was far better than I imagined. The food was easily accessible and very convenient for my days of lectures. It was close to all my lectures, sports, library and the bus stop so there wasn’t much that wasn’t within a 10 min walk. I really recommend to any first years.
My stay at Elvyn Richards as a first year student has been quite good. We have an en suite bathroom, and a cosy room that gets regularly cleaned. I met some of my best friends by choosing this hall and so I would say the social life is good especially during the first few weeks. It’s close to the dining hall, common room, laundrette, library and other halls so it’s very convenient. It is quite expensive though, however the catered food is not too bad.
Great location, accessible, 2 min walk to the library, rooms are spacious.
It a decent deal for a on suite, catered on campus accommodation with a double bed
I’ve had a very pleasant experience in Elvyn Richards this year. Having an ensuit bathroom and access to catered meals has relieved a lot of stress that I’m sure most university students are accustomed to in first year. I’ve made some great friends here and made some really great memories. The standard of living here is very good with regular cleaners, not too much noise and nice healthy food options. The only downside to this accommodation id say is the price as we are paying the most out of all accommodations and still got getting some amenities that other accommodations get such as catered breakfast or weekend catering. Regardless to that, If you are fortunate enough to afford this accommodation on a student budget then I would definitely recommend. It’s modern, well equipt and close to all the university facilities you’d need.
Elvyn is a hall that thrives socially and feels very supported with a fantastic committee and warden team available. Any maintenance issues are sorted asap from reporting and there are excellent systems set in place for any issues such as losing keys etc. It is on the pricey side but the environment, facilities, and location make up for that.
Elvyn Richards is an amazing hall. The catered hall allows you to make deeper connection and forever friendships . The pricing and location is a downfall but all tighter it is a great hall
Elvyn has been a great place to live this year with outstanding services and support. From two fantastic committees and a warden team that have gone above and beyond this year and I can tell this will continue for students coming to live at Elvyn!
Loved Elvyn and the warden team is incredible! It was so nice to have meals cooked for me in the catered hall!
It was difficult due to covid. But all in all it is a great place to live
Elvyn is a lovely sociable hall. Only issue is if you are facing the quad it can be very noisy.
big blocky building with some plants and poor food
Great community feeling and amenities
Is a really good hall and has a lot to offer
Elvyn Richards is a pretty good accommodation.
Generally, the hall is pretty safe. It’s located in a very convenient location and the rooms are a good size!
Turned out better than the photos online and the rooms are significantly bigger in person and the size of the room is ideal and cozy for any student.
Good size room, small double bed, large desk, lots of storage, en-suite with powerful shower, good catered food
Great Hall filled with interesting people, amazing atmosphere, food and location. Definitely will recommend and will be returning.
Good facility, nice people, catered
no hallnet for my laptop all day,no internet for my phone at night
Quad needs more, more trees, more benches, more character. Uni should help refirb the common room. Food quality needs improvement
very good community atmosphere within elvyn. i found the facilities were of a high standard and it was a comfortable living space so much so i am returning to elvyn next year. would recommend elvyn to future loughborough students and i found living here was a great start to my uni experience.
Would defo say this is the best hall on campus. Love the layout of the hall and the quad makes it so easy to meet new people. Our kitchens are massive for a hall that only has to cook on the weekends as well.
Elvyn is by far the best hall on campus. I love it so much that I am on the hall committee and staying here for another year instead of getting a house!
I lived in Elvyn for my first year at university and it was the best experience, I met the most amazing and likeminded people (which I live with now ) Elvyn is a very sociable hall. The rooms and facilities at Elvyn are unmatched for a catered accommodation, you have a 4ft bed and your own bathroom which you will be very glad of, if you like your own privacy. As you get to cook for your self at the weekend it prepares you for cooking in the next year if you decide to move out. The food at the canteen is ok....I am vegetarian and there was probably 2-3 options at dinner and 5-6 at lunch. You have a sandwich, salad, soup pasta and mains options throughout the year and ALWAYS desert. I enjoyed the food but some of my flat mates were less keen but always like fish and chips Friday. I know me and all my flat mates would choose Elvyn again if we were given the choice.
It’s an extremely sociable hall, room is size is good and there is a big shared kitchen for each flat. Caterer food is good too
One of the best student experiences when I was in it
I stayed at Elvyn Richards for my first year and applied again for my second year. It is a great place to stay as it is catered, which meant that I didn’t have to worry about making food while being busy with lectures.
Catered Monday to Friday for lunch and dinner means you won’t have to worry about shopping during the week and trying to figure out what you’ll eat in between lectures either. Spacious 4ft beds and a huge desk allow for easy working and comfort too. On-suite bathroom/toilet for quick and easy access when you need it
Well supported if any problems come up, clean and very socialable
no point paying for cleaning as it wasn't really done and the catered meals were awful and made people ill
We had no WiFi in the last semester
Elvyn has the perfect location, not only is it in the Village where most other accommodations are but it also has the quad which is a great outdoor social space in the middle of the hall. Elvyn’s socials did well at putting on some good events this year even though COVID restrictions limited some of them.
This was a great experience. I love the hall.
Elvyn itself was a very nice hall, the Head Warden Hillary is the best on campus by far! However some of the people that go there can be very....interesting
A happy and friendly environment
Hi vezbenson Thank you so much your review! Tendo
Arrived there and directly made a group of friends, the closest friends I’ve had. Also joined the committee the first year and helped organise freshers the following year, a great experience all in all.
Its great to see that you were heavily involved with your halls in your first year!
Great hall, wouldn’t have had such a brilliant first year without this hall
Hi member941389 We're delighted to hear that staying in halls had such a positive impact on your university experience! Tendo
Amazing hall with the best people but there is nothing in the common room and the wifi is terrible
Very sociable hall with a great atmosphere and very spacious en suite rooms
An excellent hall, with a great community feel.
One of the best social halls on campus
It is a lovely modern hall, some design issues and a horrible common room but overall a great place due to its location.
Very nice and modern flats and rooms. Very convenient and useful being catered. Can get quite noisy, as all the blocks are located closely together around a small quad, which isn't great when studying or trying to sleep.
excellent hall with good catered experience, excellent sense of community and in a prime location for engineering. good social experience throughout
It is the best hall at Loughborough! The internet is good although cuts out the odd time (same for all over campus) The common room needs to be put to better use.
So clean, great facilities, ensuite and large kitchen. Always warm.
Living in elvyn is great, so great I'm hoping to come back next year! Central location is really useful And the rooms are spacious;ore storage than any other hall. I like that it's 10 meals a week by 15 because it means you can get up whatever time and you haven't missed breakfast.
Yes it is the most expensive hall on campus but ... Great hall. Great people. Courtyard brings people together. Ensuite bathrooms and big beds makes paying a premium worth it. Loads of international students around, so socialising becomes more interesting. Catered hall so no more meal deals for lunch and microwave Mac n Cheese for dinner
I've had experiences in this hall that I'll cherish for life! I'm so happy to be in Elvyn Richards, not only are the facilities 2nd to none but the people in the hall are all so friendly and sociable
A tad on the expensive side but good all round
Best hall for the Loughborough experience!
Great hall with amazing rooms, facilities and people.
Great hall overall, the committee seems to be lacking every year
