All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation
What tenancy length do I need?
Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
Should I stay in catered student accommodation?
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
What is a guarantor and do I need one?
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
What bills will my rent include?
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
What is purpose-built student accommodation?
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Will my student accommodation be furnished?
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

I've stayed with Clodien House this year and it was great, honestly, can’t ask for more. Great staff, cool events, always something new. Ishtiaque and Tamerlan were always there to help
Great place, amazing staff and fantastic social experience. Tamerlan and Ishtiaque were very helpful as well!
My overall experience was good but the location was quite far from center and my university, rest it was good staff was really helpful specifically Ishtiaque and Tamerlan , they both were always there to help and really managed the things well.
The stay was amazing and the team of Clodien has been really helpful Ishtiaque and Tamerlan has been an amazing help .

Pretty good accommodation.......
Great staff and amenities. Good location for health students.
The accommodation was very nice and close to the Heath Park Campus where I study nursing at Cardiff University. The accommodation staff were very nice and were able to solve lots of household issues in a simple way. Additionally, the staff member Simone helped me secure a new place to live when I moved out by agreeing to act as a reference for my new landlord. I enjoyed chatting with the reception staff when I went down to do my laundry.
Great location for healthcare students. The staff are all really friendly and approachable. I've really appreciated the comms saying what's going on around Cardiff, particularly this month as they are a great way to have a break from assessments and either free or low cost
Great accom for student learning in the heath, nice rooms nice size bed and plenty study space
It is a nice place to stay, you feel welcomed and everyone is approachable
Staff are lovely, really helpful with any questions. It’s a nice place to stay :)
really nice place to live close to roath park lake, shops and 10 minutes from bus stop to Cardiff Met
Good location if you are going to be studying at the heath campus. But quit a distance from city centre so its pretty much quiet environment.
Good accomodation as it's near the hospital
This accomadation is nice and has good spaces!
Clodien house is a good place for a healthcare student
Really happy with the accomodation , and they maintenance check they do to ensure we are all safe. Pleased with how quickly they replace things when broken for example our fridge and hoover.
Clodien House is a good standard accommodation for university, the staff are always very friendly and reply to emails quickly. Overall I’ve had a great first year experience here.
Perfect location for healthcare students being right by the Hospital, good amount of space in rooms. Staff are always friendly :)
lovely location for healthcare students but quite far from town, staff are friendly
Great location next to heath park campus, 20 minutes walk from city centre and helpful staff
Great location for medical students
My room at Clodien House is very cosy and the kitchen has everything you need to get started. There is not much night life close by but a few pubs, bars and restaurants. The city center is easy enough to get to. Staff are available all around the clock so parcels can be collected at any time. It is close to cycle paths making it easy to get around the city. Easy wifi connection too.
Thank you for your review! We are happy to know that you are satisfied with your stay at Clodien House!
The staff at Clodien House are very warm and welcoming, I know I can go to them if I have any issues. The reception has a coffee station, a book shelf and there are board games to rent out. The rooms are basic but are in-line with other accommodations. Cardiff has a great nightlife and the accommodation is right next to the university hospital.
Thank you for your review! We're pleased to know you are satisfied with your stay at Clodien House. You are always welcome to pop down to Reception for a coffee and a board game.
Clodien House is a nice place to be, there are lots of close connections to nice walks like Roath Park and Heath Park. My window overlooks the allotments which is a nice aspect. I’m not the partying type and my block is always quiet so living here really suits me as a nursing student
Thank you for your review! Clodien House is close to lots of lovely sights and we're glad to know you're enjoying yourself.
Clodien House has been a great place to stay. Although the building is a little old, it is in the perfect place for UHW and the staff make up for it by being really friendly. Especially Kirsty as she has helped me many times!
Thank you for your kind review! We're glad to know that you have had a good experience at Clodien House.
I wouldn’t recommend this accommodation if you’re a first year student. I had a bad experience here so much so that this accommodation was one of the reasons I withdrew from my course and applied to study elsewhere in September. Firstly, it’s literally the most unsociable place ever. It felt like a ghost town. If you don’t get on with your flatmates you’re basically stuffed as it’s impossible to meet people here as you never see anyone and there are no social spaces. There’s a “common room” according to the website but it’s just a sofa with a TV infront of the reception desk and no one ever went there. It’s not close to any amenities, the centre for student life is a 30/40 minute walk away and it takes 1 hour to walk into the centre. It feels really isolating as you can’t really get anywhere, you can walk to cathays station but that takes 25 minutes and Lidl is a 20 minute walk away so it’s just not close to anything. Issues with parking now, can apply for permit but not enough spaces.
Hello, we are very sorry to hear that your experience at Clodien House was poor. At Unite Students, we do our best to enhance the student experience. Staff at Clodien House use the common area set up a lot of events to increase student engagement, such as pizza nights, craft afternoons and breakfast mornings. There are also a lot of student events happening within the Student Union functions throughout Cardiff, and particularly in Cathays which is very close by!
Wonderful accommodation had lots of help and contact support from the staff enjoyed living here
Thank you for your review! We're pleased to know that you have enjoyed your stay at Clodien House.
The perfect place for my first year of uni accommodation, I’ve loved living here. The staff are so lovely. Can always count on the receptionists, especially Simone who is so approachable and so helpful whenever I need assistance.
Thank you for your review. We are glad to know you've enjoyed your time living at Clodien House and have positive feedback about the team.
Good location for students working at the University Hospital of Wales, Heath Park Campus. Nice and quiet area to live at. Feels safe and secure
Thank you for your review. We're glad you have enjoyed your time at Clodien House
Overall good accommodation, but of a trek to town/uni but both walkable in 25-30mins
Thank you for your review. Clodien House is a 6 minute walk to the Royal College of Nursing, and a 36 minute walk from the Cyncoed Campus. Cardiff Bus has regular services to the City Centre, Hospital and both Cardiff Met campuses - check out the Cardiff Bus app for more information.
Generally a great accommodation. The rules are reasonable and the staff address situation’s appropriately
Thank you for your review. We're glad to know you have enjoyed your time at Clodien House.
Good place, majority of the staff working here are very nice. I wish they would just clean the rooms prior to students moving in.
Not bad , very expensive . Very close to campus
good accomodation in a convenient area
Think it's great but would appreciate a kettle and toaster
Clodien has been great no complaints would like more social amenities though
Decent it was good value a week and good support
Have had a great time socially making new friends and the location has enabled me to get to both Cardiff met campuses when I need to
Good sized ensuite room and kitchen. Eduroam wifi works very well on my laptop but not phone- no issues with internet/data/ wifi on my phone when im outside but in the building, poor connection. Veey convenient for Heath campus, around 25 min walk to cathays or shops for groceries.
Would defo recommend for hcare students
no social space OTHERWISE ALL GOOD
Everything is great. But it would be nice if there was common room area where some board games and books could be kept
Clodien house has picturesque views overlooking the allotments. Friendly staff, big rooms.
Staff are friendly and always there to help!
Overall a pretty good experience. The staff at reception are friendly
The location is good but it is very far from the city centre which is a bummer but it is so close to the University Hospital of Wales which is great for healthcare students. The staff are lovely but there’s been many issues with the appliances throughout the year that have caused difficulties etc but it’s not a bad place to live.
I was happy living at Clodien house cardiff
I am happy with living at clodien house as it’s nicer than other accommodations and is close to the hospital where I have my lectures.
I would not recommend Clodien house as in comparison to other city accommodations it is far too expensive for what you actually get. There are no social spaces whatsoever and nothing to do in the local vicinity. The only positive is that it is close to the hospital for placements (if you are a healthcare student). If you are a first year student who wants to socialise and make new friends (other than your flatmates) then I wouldn’t reccomend living here. If you are a quiet person who likes to keep themself to themself then you may like it.
The buildings are old and ill kept. There is a lot of moulding and foul smell. Kitchen had spider webs and dirt on arrival but they never agreed to clean it ( been 6 months ). There is no common room/ social space.
I am loving staying at clodien
Decent accommodation, rooms are nice and have good space. However, more social spaces to socialise would be beneficial.
It’s been ok so far, could be better. Lots of issues that make the cost not worth it.
Brilliant accommodation if you are a healthcare student at Cardiff uni.
The reception are amazing at clodien , if you need anything they help straight away and always know what to do! Only issue with clodien is the thin floors and walls but nothing to do with the staff . They make the experience living here so comfortable.
Clodien House is very convenient as it is close to campus. The size of the rooms are good compared to other accommodations available in Cardiff. There is a lack of facilities in the accommodation such as socialising spaces and washers/dryers considering the number of students living here. Overall, the accommodation is a bit dated and could be refurbished a bit for the price we pay weekly.
I got given free pizza for completing this survey
Too many mature students. wouldn't recommend for 18 year old freshers.
Clodien is the closest accomodation to Heath Campus - so the location is perfect . It is also the only healthcare accomodation with double beds. The bathrooms are nice and there is good storage space. Regular inspections and maintenence comes often to see to concerns. Overall a good accomodation
Receptionist are unfriendly, it’s scary to go and collect a parcel. Apart from the Blonde lady’s.
I've loved living at Clodien House, the buildings are always very clean, the staff are very helpful and welcoming, and the room is kept well!
Very good facilities, the WiFi connection was very good. The Halls wasn't on campus which would have helped, but nevertheless it was only a 20 minute walk to and from campus. I would recommend the campus halls first, due to being situated on campus, but if you are unable to get on campus halls, these halls are great.
As a postgraduate student who has previously lived in several student accommodations, living in liberty house has probably been the worst. The walls are very thin and virtually any sound can be heard coming from next door or from the residents living above you. Such issues have lead to several arguments between residents living above and below each other. The management are poorly trained to deal with such issues and have often told residents to walk more carefully so as to not generate the noise. As a postgraduate student who had important deadlines walking carefully was the last thing I wanted to think about when coming home after a long day of work at Uni. The staff are very poorly trained with dealing with flatmates suffering from mental health issues (for example mental breakdowns). I was unlucky enough to experience this when my neighbour who was very unwell as a result of exam stress ended up shouting and acting strangely in the student common rooms.
Excellent student accommodation for those studying at the heath campus, less than 10 minute walk to the UHW. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Internet is fast, free printing available at the reception. Very clean and well maintained. The staff organise events on special holidays or days of the year. Only fault is there is not enough washing machines or dryers. Definitely recommend!
Stayed here for a hospital placement (one good thing, it is close to UHW, but not to the uni or town) - honestly the worst accommodation I’ve experienced. Noisy, dirty and unbearably hot as the windows don’t open. Room seemed nice but is so dark I’ve had to buy another light. Entrance hall and lift full of sick and rubbish on several occasions over a few weeks. Management allow access to room without even attempting to contact you. Internet so poor I’m unable to work in my room or watch tv. Luckily I’m not paying as I’m on a placement, but having stayed in other Cardiff uni halls and talking to people who have been here all year, I would seriously recommend looking elsewhere!
the curtains need an update, they are disgusting.. only fault
Internet always down, management seem not to care or want to maintain the flats and are very agruementative toward residents. But the security staff are lovely and very responsive and in my opinion the best staff here
Internet is down majority of the time, management doesn't seem to want fix anything and are very agruementative toward residents, but security are lovely and friendly.
Great location for Heath Campus but that's it. This place is too far from the city centre for party animals and soundproofing is non-existent so no good for anyone who needs peace and quiet to study or sleep. To top it off it's expensive and once they have your money the staff aren't interested in dealing with complaints or issues. The kitchen/lounge area provided per flat is small and nothing is provided (no kettle, toaster, TV or any pots or pans) and our cooker/oven was disgusting when we took over the 'flat', as were the walls and floors. Steer clear.
Unfortunately I am not located at the Heath Campus, but if I were it would be the most perfect accommodation as I can see the hospital from my room and is a 5 minute walk. The bedrooms are a very decent size as is the bathroom, although the shower could be a little bigger. Reception are lovely and it has an all round homely feel.
Absolutely brilliant staff had a brilliant first year here perfect for health care students
If you're not on the road side it's fine, but the road is so loud it wakes people up and they can't get to sleep
Amazing accommodation but too quiet for freshers
In the Liberty House, its environment is quite. However, there is no any food store
