Coventry is the second largest city in the Midlands region so it has a lot to offer students. It’s already renowned for its music and its sport, but Coventry is getting a serious facelift and lots of investment in light of it being named City of Culture 2021, so now is a great time to be studying here.

Nights Out

Coventry has a few nightclubs to choose from: Kasbah, JJ’s, Scholars, Catch 22 and The Empire which doubles up as a live music and comedy show venue. Coventry also has lots of student-friendly bars and pubs. Popular picks are The Phoenix, which is right near the Students’ Union and campus buildings, and The Quids Inn, which is aimed at students with budget-friendly prices for food and drinks.

Public Transport

For Coventry University students, the campus is right in the heart of the city so you won’t need to use public transport if you live in halls as a fresher as they’re all within 15 minutes walk away from campus.

Popular accommodation areas for returning students are Bishopsgate Green, Hillfields, Barras Heath, Lower Coundon/Radford and Stoke/Binley. Earlsdon is a very popular areas for students at both universities. Canley is also a desirable location for Warwick students as it’s so close to campus.

Coventry has an extensive and reliable bus network if you live slightly further away from campus or want to pop into the city centre. If you’re planning to use the bus a lot, consider a student bus pass to save a few quid.

Coventry is very centrally located with the UK and benefits from excellent transport links further afield by rail or coach. Birmingham is just 20 minutes by train and London is 1 hour.

Coventry is the UK’s City of Culture 2021 so now is the perfect time to be exploring Coventry’s history and culture. Here are a few ideas of places to explore.

Museums

Coventry Cathedral isn’t technically a museum, but we suggest you take some time out to visit it. Visit the garden of remembrance, inside the shell of the once impressive and grand cathedral which was heavily bombed in World War II. The rebuilt cathedral next door is a spacious and airy space and an architectural gem. Coventry Music Museum and the 2-Tone Village is an interactive music museum explores Coventry’s music in recent times with fun exhibits, loads of memorabilia and knowledgeable and passionate staff.

Theatre

The Belgrade Theatre puts on a variety of live performances, including contemporary theatre and dance shows. The Albany Theatre put on touring shows in its beautiful art-deco building. Warwick Arts Centre on the University of Warwick campus is also a hub for the arts with a concert hall, theatre, gallery and cinema. Criterion Theatre, a cosy amateur theatre based in Earlsdon, completes our list.

Music

Coventry is a regular stop-off for touring bands and gigs so you can expect to see lots of mainstream bands and artists playing at the Coventry Building Society Arena. The Empire, recently relocated into a bigger space, hosts DJ and club nights as well as live music. The Kasbah is a prominent feature in Coventry’s nightlife, hosting live music and club nights.
