Lilian Knowles House offers residence purposefully designed student accommodation exclusive for postgraduates studying at The London School of Economics, which is only minutes away via public transport. You have plenty of attractions and various forms of entertainment to explore, all within walking distance. Zone 1 Liverpool Street station is also a short walk away, making commuting easy.
After a long day of class, you can unwind in the common room and watch TV or relax outside in the courtyard. To ensure your stay is as convenient as possible, there is Wi-Fi, all-inclusive bills, free contents insurance, bike storage, on-site laundry facilities, vending machines, and even a computer room. For an added sense of security, there is electronic entry, 24-hour staff cover, on-site security, and CCTV.

What tenancy length do I need?
Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
Should I stay in catered student accommodation?
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
What is a guarantor and do I need one?
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
What bills will my rent include?
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
What is purpose-built student accommodation?
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Will my student accommodation be furnished?
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

i really enjoy the residence and its location (right next to spitalfields market and a few tube stops). the rooms are a bit outdated, but it's great to have your own bathroom and everything is ready for you when you arrive (wifi, kitchen, desk, etc.) however, the boiler seems to be broken all the time. The staff are great about responding to it, but as someone who has lived in plenty of dorms before and has never dealt with this issue ever, it's not really clear why there's such a problem.
Horrible hot water system, unpredictable water cutoffs during winter.
Overall not bad, but key and nightguard are problematic.

There are two glaring problems in my experience: (1) the constant lack of hot water which has been truly a nightmarish experience over the winter, to the point where I felt sick because of the low temperatures combined with the impossibility of taking a hot bath and (2) the awful way we've been treated by the staff, with the general lack of basic politeness and some graver instances of just blatant rudeness. Imagine being spoken to as if you're an imbecile for asking a simple question for which the answer is not obvious, as well as being treated like your (extremely reasonable) complaints are senseless. The staff is generally snobbish. Other than that, in their favour, I can indeed say that the property is in an excellent location and my room has adequate furniture and the kitchen is adequately clean. The social spaces are tolerable, if a bit outdated. If I had just a bit more money, I'd not stay here.

Great staff, but when I moved in it hadnt't been cleaned at all. The water is always off, and they took over three months to fix my oven. But other than that, its been really lovely!

Since October last year, there have been more than ten hot water outages, with four occurring just this past week alone. Despite reporting these issues, writing an email to Lilian Knowles House for a refund has proven futile. Their responses merely state that a maintenance worker has been contacted and that they "understand our concerns." However, the reality is that the staff handling these complaints do not live here and seem to completely disregard refund-related requests. We strongly demand compensation and a refund for these repeated and unacceptable disruptions. Don't book this accommodation unless you can take freezing cold water in London's winter.

The location couldn't be better, and it is walkable from school. The hot water runs out all the time, and packages are frequently lost for a few days. There is a general sense that things don't reliably work. I live on the 6th floor and the elevator was on and off broken for a month. Whether there will be hot water for showers on any given day feels like a dice roll. There usually is, but every week or two there's not for a while. The fridge has broken a few times, the oven has broken a few times, etc. etc. The staff do their best to address these issues, but they're still kind of constant. I believe the rate is much lower for the market rate for the neighborhood--which again is awesome. All in all, the situation is not ideal and somewhat annoying, but it could be much worse and I won't regret having lived here for a year.

There is no hot water half of the time I have lived in this accommodation. This is getting ridiculous. It’s impossible to shower with ice cold water in the winter. All residents deserve to receive a refund!

I have been staying at Lilian Knowles House for several months, and while the location and facilities initially seemed promising, the ongoing issue with the lack of hot water has been incredibly frustrating. The receptionists are very mean generally, and most important WE DO NOT HAVE HOT WATER. They keep saying that apologies and thank you for our understanding but we do not understand. It takes a very long time for the team to respond to maintenance requests (or they never respond sometimes). There has been frequent hot water outages and sometimes it took over 24 hours for the issue to be resolved, leaving students with only cold water during the freezing winter months.

My flat flooded multiple times, my heating doesn’t work, my shower drain has never worked and the water pressure is horrible. There is never hot water and there is black mold

It has been a good experience living at Lilian Knowles House. We do face issues with hot water often but apart from that, I am happy with the locality and bedroom size. If I had to suggest someone an accommodation, I would definitely suggest. Lastly, admin services can be better. We get incorrect emails sometimes and some of the staff are not very approachable / biased.

In general, is a nice student hall. The rooms are clean and well equipped. The shared kitchen is ok. There are problems of maintenance that could be solved more diligently and that requiere the attention of the landlord more than the staff, like boiling renovation and prevention of floods.

Definitely good value for money. Can't find a better accommodation at this price in central London! There is everything you need even though rooms and bathrooms are very small. Overall, amenities could be more modern, but the property is undergoing renovations this summer so hopefully it will be better in the future. There have been frequent water interruptions but I imagine the underlying problem will be fixed with the renovation. I got lucky and had great flatmates but know of friends who didn't have many interactions with the other students living in their flat. I'd definitely recommend it for a one-year stay.

Property is well managed and maintained. There were some water repair works this year during term which caused some difficulty, I wish we were informed ahead of term or had rent adjusted. This repair probably means that the property is in better shape for the next term however.

The rooms and en suite bathrooms are spacious enough, but the flat kitchen is extremely small. We have 6 chairs, and there's 7 of us in the flat! Even if we got another chair, there would be no physical space for it. The staff are nice, but every time we complain/ask for something to be fixed/solved, weeks go by without knowing what is going on. The common room is quite small but well furbished, it would be even better if we had a communal area in each flat, too. The cleaning of the flat kitchen, which is scheduled weekly by contract, doesn't happen regularly.

Lilian Knowles House is a fantastically located student accommodation. The en-suite rooms are functional and reasonably sized. The staff is helpful, generally kind, and the common areas are nice to meet other people from the hall.

I love homey environments and Lilian Knowles provides exactly that! The management team who greet us at the door are the warmest and friendliest people and I always feel like I'm coming home. The quality of the rooms could be better - certain cupboards, closet and bathroom tiles are coming off so not sure if its worth the price, but the maintenance team are quick to fix issues.

I enjoyed my stay here, the staff is very friendly and the rooms are in an overall good condition. The area is really lively, but not one of the safest. Depending on where your window is facing, it can get quite loud though, especially on the weekends. Also, the bathrooms are quite small, which for me as a tall person is difficult sometimes. Overall, I‘m happy with my experience though.

Lilian Knowles house was a great place to stay because it was super connected. Just a 3 minute walk to Liverpool street station and with a boots, Sainsbury's, Tesco and halal KFC very closeby. Also just a few minutes walk from the iconic bricklane, spitalfields, moorgate park. Very buzzing area. Apart from a couple of maintenance issues the accommodation in itself was great, the reception staff was very nice and the events coordinators made sure everyone enjoyed things.

Before I moved in I was quite put off by the Google reviews, but I guess only the people who had (or found) a reason to complain are writers of reviews. The staff are very friendly and helpful and coming home after a long day and being greeted by name makes you feel at home, even in a big, unfamiliar city.

The life in the b building facing artillery lane was challenging with little light, screaming ppl, party occurring just across the street. However, the cleaning was very high in quality so I appreciate it.

The only good thing about this place is its location. this accommodation has been neglectful when it comes to maintaining basic amenities. For instance, there has been an ongoing problem with a broken blind in my room since the day I moved in. This not only affects my privacy but also compromises the overall comfort and functionality of the living space. Despite repeatedly requesting a replacement, no action has been taken to resolve this matter, leaving me frustrated and dissatisfied with the level of service provided.

I loved living in Lilian Knowles House - the location is absolutely incredible. Further, every room has a private bathroom, which is a steal for the price paid per week! This is a really nice place to spend a year while studying.

The management staff at LKH is SO horrible that it takes away from the other pleasant experiences of the form. They are rude, unwilling to listen, and extremely terrible unprofessional. I would not recommend anyone to live here and suffer the inevitable experience of talking to the support staff. From the cleaning staff to the reception management, utter disregard for residents and rude behaviour is persistent. The quality of room is fine and the location is excellent but it does not compensate for the management’s attitude.

I have run into multiple issues while living at Lilian Knowles, including extremely rude staff, an unresponsive studen warden, security concerns, and broken appliances. I so wish I had gotten an apartment instead of paying high rates to live in this building.

Poor sound insulation. You can hear exactly every step from above. Congratulations to you if he or she is an active walker who sleeps late night and wakes up in the early morning. You can barely sleep and concentrate on work because the walking sound can wake you up in awkward hours. Terrible sleeping and living experience. WiFi and internet service are not available few days this month. The common room and study room are quite small when comparing to some of the LSE postgraduate halls. Also, free printing service is not provided. The only good thing is the location. It's near the Spitalfield Market, 24-hour supermarket, Liverpool Street and Algate East stations, and Shoreditch. The transportation network is good.

Terrible experience. WiFi is constantly broken and no intention of hall management to fix it. Warm water is off for days. Laundry room is more broken than fixed. Hall management takes weeks to respond to emails or just ignores it completely.

WORST MANAGEMENT. they do not care about the students. i live on the 5th floor and my lift has been broken for 6 weeks now with no end in sight. all they tell us is "tomorrow tomorrow tomorrow". something as simple as fixing a lightbulb in my room took 3 weeks. making the washroom fan work took 6 weeks. Please do yourself a favor and DO NOT COME HERE. believe me. you will thank me later.

Extremely disappointed with the hall. I chose to live in student housing so I could avoid problems with administration and focus on school, but this has not been the case. The administration does not work at all, does not respond and when they do respond does not offer any solutions. We've had the lift out for 6 weeks, the fans in our bathrooms broken for 8 weeks, an oven that doesn't bake, only broils and smells of burning paint. After repeated conversations with management, we are just given apologies or ignored. Also, you cannot choose which floor or room you are in, so it's quite possible you'll be facing either a construction site or a street with a lot of loud drunk people passing who can see in the windows or into the common interior area where people are talking as they pass through to different blocks. Fire alarms go off quite frequently in the middle of the night or early hours of the morning. Really I would think twice before trying your luck in Lilian Knowles.

Recurring problems with electricity (kitchen appliances don't work in studio) and fire alarms, which the staff are unwilling to fix, regardless of promises made. Rather disappointing, considering this is one of the more expensive LSE halls. Not really a social hall, given that everyone is postgrad, but if you came here to study, that shouldn't be a problem.
