Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

All in all a great place holistically.
I love my experience at Goodenough so far, it is a great place to make friends, socialize and network with students from different Cultures and Backgrounds. Also, there are a Coffee Shop/Resturant and the Great Hall which offers full catering service every day making it easier not to think much about food. Lots of international events take place at Goodenough which gives me the opportunity to engage and participate in these events.
Contrary to its names and values, actual culture the hall maintain is very toxic. Bullying and racial discrimination are norms; if you are from Asian countries or have Asian background, you will be superseded by White, European peers. In this hall, British culture is the top and must be respected, while other cultures are ignored at best, laughed at the worst.
I have been living at Goodenough for a year. I am very pleased for my decision to apply here as before I was living in a shared house. The location is great especially if you study at UCL, Birkbeck, SOAS and City. My department is just two min away (UCL) and there is a range of shops, cafes and restaurants around. Regarding social life, it is the best place to be. There is always something going on here. Also, there are many clubs and societies and the College supports each one of them so for sure you will find one that matches your interests. Students here come from all over the world so it is ideal if you are looking for a vibrant international community. As far as the room itself, I am very pleased with the size (room b at London House) and the College provides cleaning once a week and clean bedsheets etc. It also has a desk so you can even study at your room but I always study at the Goodenough library which is super cool!
GC is an international private student hall for postgrad students. It is not affiliated with any university and as such draws a large variety of members to its halls. It's an amazing place to live and study with a hectic social calendar and something for everyone. Would 100% recommend :D
