Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

WiFi ,especially, at night is bad...sometimes is completely unavailable. There are no social events, organised by/for Gowar. The maintenance team is outstanding. The cleaning personnel is doing its job, but with 8 people in each flat don't expect it to be sparkling clean. There are 2 fridges in each kitchen, they are hardly enough if 6 people are using the kitchen ,for 8 people...
Hall was wonderful. Very spacious room and modern kitchen facilities. Only criticism would be of the lack of room for socialising with others apart from the kitchen and a lack of social space in the hall to interact with other residents of the hall.
Gowar has the best bedrooms, and the en-suite bathroom is very nice. I can't tell if the bathroom floors are supposed to be heated but they're warm. It's okay if you don't like your flatmates, I never see mine and I still have a fun time cooking alone and eating in my room. I visited Wedderburn once and it was awful, there were odd cracks in the walls and a lift button was missing. It looked like Gowar but if it had been neglected and inhabited by the campus squirrels. I like Gowar and recommend it because the wifi is good.
Where you meet amazing people and get drunk to musicals.
Its amazing and has a double bed!!!
Wouldn't have wanted to spend my first year anywhere else. It felt like I was living in centre parks. All the best students live in Gowar.
I absolutely loved my room in Gowar, it was so spacious and it was like my safe haven. The grass between Gowar and Wedderburn was nice too because you can have picnics out there on a summer's day which I did several times! Love this hall!
Really great bedrooms with ensure bathroom/shower. The cleaning staff was great and the kitchen was very convenient.
Bathroom is horrible as there is no ventilation, toilet is very bad quality, there is mold on the ceiling
Gowar hall is undoubtedly one of the best halls at Royal Holloway.
Gowar and Wedderburn are the best halls of Royal Holloway University. Lively, beautiful and Social.
Really beautiful modern halls - nicer than Butler/Williamson/Tuke as its in its own area opposite Wedderburn with a green in the middle. Kitchens nice and spacious, rooms big with double bed and good ensuite (better than Runnymede!) No common room so socialising revolves around the kitchen so gathering with other flats tends to be in one person's flat with everyone's chairs. More of a walk to lectures than I thought but still closer than most.
Good social atmosphere and very high quality
5 minute walk from any lecture theatre. Near the gym and back entrance.
Lived as an only fresher... Others were all in higher years due to the flat being a disabled one (meeting my needs) but was still great. Freshers week was a little dull though due to this.
Everyone is very sociable due to the layout of the flats. The place felt like home after a few months and the rooms facing the lawn had a wonderful view every morning. The staff were friendly and helpful. Could do with a common room however, as there was nothing like that at all...
