Ideally placed for accessing all Queen's departments, City Hospital and Royal Victoria. It's 2 minutes walk from Botanic which has a whole range of mini-supermarkets, shops selling international foods, restaurants, cafes and the train station. The bedrooms are spacious but the buildings are old so in winter the heating can be too much or too little depending on where your room is. There is a laundry room with washing machines, dryers, iron and board. The machines are chargeable and you pay through an App. There is no outdoor seating area although the area behind the property is paved with a small grassed area up to the concrete and barbed wired wall. Kitchens are small given that they are shared by 4 people unless no-one cooks or uses the facilities. There's one undercounter fridge which means you each have a shelf and one under counter freezer with 3 shelves. It's best to share common foods such as milk, butter etc to save space. There's limited kitchen cupboard space on the top floor
Room wasn’t cleaned when I moved in for the year. Summer students things still in the kitchen cupboards. Bathroom is so small, shower room smells horrific (I think it’s coming from the drain). The kitchen sink ALWAYS blocks no matter what. If you dropped a pin you can hear it in the room below you. But location is great, 5 minute walk from Landon building and McClay library
Mount Charles was refurbished recently which means the houses are lovely and modern enough. The location is amazing it is right next to university, tescos at the end of the road, train 2 minutes away and bus 1 minute away. Socially, people stick to themselves, there is an induction meeting with the entire house at the start of the year so you get know who you are living with but after that it’s very much so just a hi in the hallway and that’s all. I only truely know about 2 people I live with properly, the rest I don’t know at all. There is no online groupchat or out of house sociallising/going out so if your looking for friends or a party I would go somewhere else. Noise levels vary, the cleaners come early Tuesday morning and make a lot of noise so if that’s your day off you’ll be woken by the noise annoyingly. Furthermore the pipes/radiators/water are all very very loud which can be annoying also.Overall it is an average place to live, it’s not the worst but it isn’t the best either
The newer houses in mount Charles are really good with decent sized rooms with 9 to a house with nice kitchens with two fridges and showers with max 3 people to, the older houses with smaller rooms (which you pay the same price for even tho the prices are apparently charged on the square feet of the room) have 12 people to with only 2 showers (6 to a shower), 2 kitchens with one fridge in each making it impossible to keep much food in pushing up your costs by not being able to buy in bulk or pre cook meals for the week. If you get offered a place in 11 to 19 then take it if any others you will be wasting money.
