Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.
Lovely peaceful accommodation. A good base to work from and good transport links.
Stayed in the mature halls block after staying opposite the halls in a house in second year. Definitely the right choice. Worked out cheaper (bills included), great management who fix stuff right away (no scumbag landlords), big rooms & nice en-suites. Corner rooms have 3 windows too. Cleaners do bins 3 times a week which is sweet. Location is perfect, in the action of cowley but not in the centre, bus stop opposite and only 25 min walk to uni. Drawbacks - no Inside social spaces only a courtyard (good in summer) and kitchens not a great chill spot as no sofas. 5 min walk and you’re at city arms though so no big deal. Only bad thing is that there’s only 2 washers n 2 dryers which are constantly broken. Will send you crazy. Usually fixed within a day or 2 when you ring them. Best halls that Brookes offer hands down. Don’t settle for a Clive booth job If you have the choice.
Overall great place to stay in. Spacious en suite room, I got a unit with really large bathroom and wide mirror too. My room was next to the kitchen so it gets a little loud occasionally especially on weeknights. Easy access to city centre, good walking distance to Cowley. Bus stop right outside the hall. Just had issues with the laundry when I stayed there, one of the drier is always out of service so there’s a long queue to get the laundry done.

A very convenient student accommodation with very proximate bus stops and on the main road which makes your daily travels easier especially at nights in addition to travelling with luggage. The en suite rooms are amazing and spacious offering lots of privacy. The design of the rooms are very nice as well. and the kitchen is a great place to meet and chat with your flatmates who easily turn into your friends shortly. I spent 2 very wonderful years in this accommodation. Highly recommended
Overall a very good experience
I liked the accommodation. The room was big and spacious. It was money well spent.
One of the best hall, very friendly staff and any complaints were resolved quickly.
Overall my experience living in Canterbury House was a positive one. The accommodation is clean and modern. There are good security measures in place which made me feel safe during my stay and I had no problems with the facilities (the wifi rarely went down and we never had any issues with broken appliances). Canterbury house is a fairly quiet halls, making it good for those who may not want to be in a louder, more lively accommodation. The only issues I found were that maintenance issues, such as the front gate and block doors being permanently unlocked/broken, took a long time to be addressed and occurred multiple times throughout the year.
Great size bedrooms with en-suite and shared kitchen. the cleaners are very good and i have had no problems with them during my stay. the internet was off on cation though most of these were due to maintenance and we were informed before it occurred. Access to campus and town s really easy U5 stop right outside the gates. Due to being close to the road and lots of people living here, it can get very loud at times, especially at night. The place itself can get incredibly warm in the summer and can be very difficult to stay in; as well as the water in the apartments are very warm even using the cold tap, these two issues have yet to be completely resolved. The staff are very helpful and do try their best to sort out issues, with most issues being delt with straight away. Communication with the staff is also very good and reply often on the same day. Overall, this is a very good accommodation that for later years is best for cost.
Brand new modern hall opened in Sept 2017. Great size bedrooms and kitchens, I stayed in the house and kitchen space was generous. Internet went down a few times but not too much of an issue. Great location on the Cowley Road with a bus stop right outside. 20 minute walk to Gypsy Lane Campus. Can be a little noisy at night times as smoking area is on the forecourt, wardens and hall staff really helpful and friendly. Laundry room only has 2 washing machines and 2 tumble driers. Really good value for money considering its location and the fact its new. Cleaners really good. Only negative I had a bike stolen whilst I lived here but that isn't so much a hall issue I guess as an Oxford issue! 5/5!
