All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation
What tenancy length do I need?
Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
Should I stay in catered student accommodation?
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
What is a guarantor and do I need one?
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
What bills will my rent include?
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
What is purpose-built student accommodation?
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Will my student accommodation be furnished?
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

Overall, I will recommend Magnet Court. The studio is big enough with the competitive price compared with other student accommodation. Though the light in the flat is not bright enough. The location is great, very convenient for accessing Newcastle University and the mall. The shortages are the public space are very limited. If someone is seeking to have many social activities, this might not be a good choice. The heater is not strong enough and isn’t last long….
very nice studio, it is pretty big and have many windows in the room. In addition, it is near to the city center and our university. It is convenient to everywhere. Pretty recommend!!!
Location is really the best. I love the windows in my room. I like how my room feels like home. The bathroom can be better. The space in the kitchen is more spacious than other accommodations that I have been.
Magnet court is an amazing affordable space for masters students who would appreciate more privacy within their learning. They have phenomenal team members, specifically: Zofia , Rebecca, Tony, Andy, and many more ! I couldn’t rate this place highly enough, definitely book!
The south-facing studio is spacious with adequate sunlight, and the walls might be well insulated since any sound or noise from neighbors is barely heard. The staff of the accommodation are also kind and friendly. In brief it is pretty good.
Great Experience so far, nice facility, wasn’t too sure staying at a students living but I’m glad I chose here
Quite good. But the roommate noise is serious and affects my life.(secret to keep my name)
First impression - my room was not cleaned from previous tenant. Bathroom light was also not working. I was offered to move to a bigger flat in a different location for higher rent, although I expected and would've preferred money compensation instead. Staff is very welcoming and always ready to help/advise. There is social space available in magnet court, although I have not seen many students using it. Unite staff do organise a lot of social events and encourage students to attend, but it has not worked in my favour yet. Laundry is on an expensive side, for a wash and dry you are looking at £5.00 Location is brilliant. Plenty of shops, gyms, bars, clubs, Newcastle university, library and Train station in walking distance. The building itself is quiet. Wifi runs through an external provider called Glide, which hasn’t been great for the past two weeks but I am working with Glide team to fix it. Overall, I would recommend choosing Magnet for location, excellent service and safety.
It has been a great experience overall living at magnet court. It is very close by to the University and the staff at magnet court are very kind and helpful. You get to live with a wide range of people from a wide variety of different countries so you get to know and make a diverse group of friends. So overall I would suggest a student wanting to live nearby to Newcastle University to live in Magnet Court.
I have written a Google review too long to fit here, under the name Jamie Whiten. Overall not great value for money and a fair few flaws, but I have enjoyed my time here. Worst thing by far is Circuit Laundry, and would consider looking elsewhere just because of this.
Got a studio here during my last year as a result of its amazing location, centrally located opposite Newcastle's biggest shopping centre (Eldon Square). Unlike the previous reviewer, since I'm based in a studio, I'm not subject to fortnightly cleaning of communal areas, whereas my wi-fi has always been perfect once getting past the initial set-up (their StudentCom internet is a bit weird - you have to log-in within the browser, which led to some teething problems for me at first). They also have an ethernet connection available - faster than my internet speed at home (although that probably says more about how bad my home internet is). Hall management and social experience is where this flat really shines - the staff are incredibly friendly, chatty, and have the uncanny (slightly creepy) ability of remembering everyone's names. If you have a problem, you speak to the staff at reception - or use their online maintenance app - and you'll always get pointed in the right direction.
