Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

So far my experience in Freemen’s has been for the most part good. However, for £9k a year I would expect to not have to worry about whether there will be a washing machine free or if my sink is going to leak. The location is great and it is generally very clean. The biggest disturbance though is the fact I can hear my flatmates through my walls easily and it is almost like I don’t have a door when it comes to hearing people in the corridor, it is extremely loud and disruptive. The ensuite is very nice and was clean (apart from a blocked drain) when I moved in. The sink size could be bigger but that is a minor point. The water pressure is good enough and the bedroom is very spacious with enough space to fit my large suitcase inside of my wardrobe without sacrificing storage.
Absolutly disgusting! a student takes a loan to pay for these holes, slum is profitting from a student's loan.
Value for money- internet, easy to commute to university and city centre. But could be quite hard if you're first year students. Recommended for 3rd, 4th year and PhD students.
Leicester University's "budget" accommodation offering at £84.50 a week. Little/No care has been given to these blocks over the years. The carpeting in the entire block is felt (similar to the top of a scouring pad), which is quite difficult to clean. In fact I had my shoes/slippers on the entire time I was there. Cheap furniture, black mould around windows, very very very poor lighting, little control over heating (since hot water pipes run INSIDE the room and turning off the radiator won’t help). Leaving windows open allows for insects to enter the rooms, which become a perfect breeding ground given how warm it is in there. This solved the mystery of why there were so many spiders throughout the block…or did it? And whilst it is understandable that some universities are cash strapped there are simple aesthetic measures that UoL could have taken, such as getting rid of spider webs / disinfecting the block, removing stickers from walls, washing of writings on walls and applying paint.
there is not so much information about freemen's common, hopefully this information will be useful if you are planning to move to one of the university accommodation. let me start with the rooms, from what i have seen the rooms are not actually that small. you just have to learn how to use the spaces available to you properly. most of the furnitures seem to be in good condition however the cupboard is a bit too small. location wise, it is not that far from the university. it is however expensive compared to renting a private accommodation with few other friends but if you are new to the city like me, it is always good idea to stay in the university accommodation for the first year and then move out.
I asked them to fix my shower several times, was not fixed had no shower for 2 full terms.
