Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

Nice but old. Needs renovation
We’ll maintained rooms but found quite difficult to walk to the near by grocery store, unless one plans to order online as a group
I can't even find any words to explain how much I hated living there. No social life, people were so dull and anti-social, constantly reporting parties/ any noise to the security. The wifi was clashing all the time, bathrooms were mouldy, there were some constant issues with many flats. I would NEVER recommend heronbank to anyone! The only huge plus (for me) was the location next to the gym, by the lovely green area and goosies. I enjoyed spending my time by the pond, reading a book etc.- but it really depends on your preferences, if you'd rather stay at central campus with no screaming goosies nearby, then it's not a place for you.
around 10 minutes walk to main campus, quite, clean, just a bit far from the laundry room and post room
Heronbank is a bit of a trek from the main campus but is in a lovely location. Rooms are spacious and reasonable. Kitchens are extremely low quality for the price with little social space. Very dull halls. A lot of people don't socialise much - this isn't exactly a fault of the uni though. My main qualms were with the cleaners. Our cleaner would seemingly hang around our flat all day and it was all a bit weird. I also had money stolen from my room while she was around - complained but little was done about it. Cleaners were often quite rude. There was a bit of stealing in halls. Don't really know how this compares with others but one student had laptop and phone stolen from their kitchen. Overall, decent but overpriced like most halls.
Everything apart from the location was amazing!
Although the place is a bit far away, the rooms are really good
Nice accomodation to stay at but can be very boring. If you're not about going out clubbing then this place is perfect for you. If you want to acc go out and have fun then look elsewhere like AV or JM.
great for people that like studying in their room
Very nice, quiet space to live in. Perfect for some however for me it was too far away from everything and not social enough.
Loved living in Heronbank. Such a lovely place especially with the lake. It's nowhere near as far from campus as people make out. I have a maximum 10min walk to my lectures.
The flats have a homely feel and the bedrooms are big with a nice ensuite. You can access any other flat once you have got into Heronbank, but each kitchen has a lock that can only be opened by those in that particular flat. Each room has a massive pin-board for photos/calendars etc. and plenty of shelves for your work. I would highly recommend to anyone who wants to party but not every single night.
kitchen is a bit small but best group of friends made!
People lied about being outgoing in my flat when applying so had antisocial people in it, but a very good room size, good bathroom size, friendly cleaners, and other friendly residents make up for it. Also great views and peaceful. Geese may decide to wake you up half way through the night. Lovely place to hang out.
Its great that you're in seperate flats but you can still walk between other flats; this was particularly useful during freshers week. Also the rooms are huge and the bathrooms are great. The cleaners are lovely and our bathrooms and kitchen is cleaned regularly. We're quite far from campus and with all the road works at the moment its quite a long walk into lectures but the surrounding area and nature we have around us is beautiful and I'm lucky to have a room that faces the lake rather than the cars/courtyard.
So many benefits! The cheapest with an en-suite, large rooms including a comfy chair that most don't have, good flat sizes, beautiful surroundings, better community feel with the layout of the kitchen (most people say they prefer our kitchen with the dining and cooking area separated by part of a wall rather than the table being in the middle of the cooking area). It's a bit further away from central campus than others but only a ten-minute walk tops (unless you are traversing all the way to Gibbet Hill if you are studying medicine or something related). The lake and wildlife is beautiful but - seriously - do not come if you are terrified of swans, geese, ducks, moor hens, herons, rabbits, and anything like that. They are everywhere! (Although I don't see how you could be scared of them, they are so cute!) Domestic assistants clean your bathroom once a week, and kitchen twice a week. It is also a slightly quieter halls than, say, Rootes. Highly recommend.
The most anti-social place in the world. Full of grumpy post grads who dont like noise, and the cleaners grow to hate you... BUT WHO CARES, WE HAVE AN EN SUITE.
