overall a very nice college to live in! it takes a little time to get help sometimes, and some rooms may lack amenities, but eventually the staff will solve it for us. everyone, including the staff and residents are very warm and nice. this college has rooms that are open to everyone living there, and you can play games with people in the college.

Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

Extremely small kitchen for 9 people (catered accommodation but many stay during the holidays) and very poor response when the boiler kept turning off during winter (multiple times we had no heating or hot water for days)
Rooms are either single or shared,. Single rooms can be quite small, but double rooms are very big. I was in a double room, but I appreciate my own space. It would have been good if there were more quiet spots located around the college for me to go to in the morning or during the day to read or call someone in privacy. I liked being catered for, and the staff are very friendly.
A more relaxed college with less drinking which suits me. People are very welcoming and friendly! The cleaners and catering staff are interesting and interested in a personable way.
Made my durham life so much going on and so friendly
No reception but internet is amazing. Clean facilities, friendly people, great food!
St. John´s is a lovely place to live. The community is great, people are very friendly, and you get supported very well. It´s a small college, so you get to know most people who are living there very quickly. The only downside is that there are often not enough study spaces, and it can be very loud and crowded and sometimes the working spaces are either very cold or very warm. In some years there will be the learning ressource centre, which is now being planned, and then this problem will hopefully be no longer an issue.
A warm, family-like college with a tight-knit community and wonderful smiley college staff
Excellent, friendly college. Such a beautiful location on the old Bailey. The staff go above and beyond to make sure everything is perfect and there is everything you need, also the food is the best in Durham!
A fantastic college with lots of friendly faces and opportunities in front of you. Strongly recommend that you should apply here.
Pretty good accommodation but other colleges do offer more for your money
Love this cute college, it makes such a supportive and friendly community. The food here is really good, especially during our formals. It's located conveniently for lectures and going to town centre, has rooms looking out onto the cathedral and bailey, and you get to know everyone -including the lovely staff- so well.
