All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation
What tenancy length do I need?
Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
Should I stay in catered student accommodation?
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
What is a guarantor and do I need one?
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
What bills will my rent include?
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
What is purpose-built student accommodation?
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Will my student accommodation be furnished?
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

I was initially worried when I was allocated to Trevs college in 2018, having heard about all the college rivalry, but I can honestly say there is no other college that I would have rather been in after 2 years of being here. I started first term in shared, and ended up with a friend that I still see regularly now. The layout of the rooms means it is really easy to make friends on and between landings- don't be put off by the hexagons. The food really improved- the desserts can be a bit variable throughout the year, but otherwise I had plenty of nice food! I actually gained weight as I was eating so much, so I am glad the Trevs gym membership was so cheap. The bar nights and the formals are all lovely, DJ Fowler is the best, and all of the events that are hosted by Trevs I have loved. Trevs is the only college within the same building, and there is something really homely about waking up, shoving a dressing gown and slippers on, and heading straight to breakfast.
Horrible management. Food theft in the K block kitchen while we're on lockdown during the coronavirus crisis from March to June and they won't spare a coin to insert a security camera in the kitchen. We get emails from them every now and then whenever students complain and all we get are emails saying that they have been alarmed and that the behaviour is unacceptable but they won't lift a finger to fix the problem. The social experience is unsatisfactory considering that there are notes stuck everywhere in the kitchen by students who have had their foods stolen to warn one another not to steal. The facility is even worse: I've spent an entire winter without a working radiator because my radiator would make knocking noises at midnight and at dawn. I've been complaining to the student accommodation manager for 3 months and tried moving a new room at K block but the radiator there was not any different so I simply told them to shut it down so that I can finally get some sleep.

Trevs is the best! It’s got everything from music, sport and a social life! I love that you’re not stuck to the traditional flat format and you really get to know everyone. You really find your home at Trevs.
A bit far out and unnattractive, but a good sense of community
hard to navigate and the wifi isn't great
A very musical college that has loads of great socials.
Very good living space that is different to any other university hall or college. The people of Trevs are wonderful and the social spaces are perfect for socialising.
Just a fantastic place in every possible way
The community within the college is incredible and I have so much fun here, however the facilities aren't of a great standard. The rooms are fine however the price we pay for them isn't relative. This can all be overlooked however as the people here and the social aspect (like events and parties etc.) are so so good!
Trevs is friendly because it is smaller than most other colleges, but it is not too small. You still see new people every now and then but it is easy to find your friends. We are super proud of our hexagonal architecture which can seem to be weir for others, but it really makes the college look more cozy and less like a school. The college is also a nice mix of new and old - we do have gowned dinners but we're not posh. There's a lot happening in Trevs and most seem to enjoy their time here.
Actually the coolest and best college in Durham! We all live together under one hexagonal roof and it could'nt be better!
Great social spaces and friendly staff. Love it!
Trevs provides a perfect homely environment for learning which makes your experience as a student much easier.
It is a lovely college with lovely students and staffs.
The wifi is slightly dodge and signal is variable depending on who you're with, but every other aspect of Trevs is pretty much perfect. We have a great bar (which is subsidised so very cheap), comfortable common room (or, 'undercroft') and the food is better than my mum's (a huge achievement).
A great place for Freshers, everyone is very friendly and amiable, they don't make you feel awkward at all, it's extremely welcoming and homey - especially for people who have left their families for the first time. The Freps are amazing! They are 110% committed to you and your well being, they are so nice and easy to get on with, and really helpful! Though the only thing about Trevs, is that it's about 10-15 minutes from Durham City and from the majority of the lecture halls. But absolutely love it!
I love Trevs - of course it isn't for everyone, but if you are sociable, bubbly, want to be involved in college life, and looking for some generally awesome people to spend the next few years with, then look no further.
JCR a waste of space. Senior staff patronise the students and victimise certain groups e.g. Football and rugby clubs.
