All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation
What tenancy length do I need?
Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
Should I stay in catered student accommodation?
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
What is a guarantor and do I need one?
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
What bills will my rent include?
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
What is purpose-built student accommodation?
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Will my student accommodation be furnished?
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

Absolutely brilliant place to live! Takes the stress out of living whilst remaining affordable, amazing location and incredible staff!
Lovely place to live. Just rebooked for a second year. The staff are always so friendly and quick to react when something does happen. The rooms are lovely and have a lot of storage which is great! The social spaces are great and I love the fact I have somewhere to go and study that isn’t just my room. The company is also great with giving freebies and great experiences. Overall an amazing place to live!
This is my second year staying at Bridge Street Exchange as I liked it so much the first year. The staff are all very friendly, My room is spacious with a lovely view (13th Floor) and the building is situated right in the heart of town which is very convenient. one thing to note is that it is evident there are underlyijg issues with the plumbing system. The showers have a tendency to block up regularly - something that my flatmates have noticed in their showers too and recently there has been an issue with the water being turned off frequently. Other than that a very pleasant place to live.

The staff are really helpful regardless of the problems we face. Really friendly environment and alot of events for either freebies or meeting people.
Great accommodation, always an event on and a smiley face to welcome you.
After leaving my room key there, I went to the office to look for assistance, and I was able to address the issue right away.
Great management team!! Very patient and helpful
Amazing accommodation, very modern. The staff are lovely and always happy to help with any problems. A great location for any of the nearby universities, with a bus stop around the corner as well as plenty of restaurants, clubs, and shops on your doorstep.
Great accommodation that has events all the time. Great management as well!
My stay at Bridge Street Exchange was fantastic! The staff were incredibly welcoming, and the rooms were both spacious and spotless. What made it even better was the chance to meet such diverse and friendly people. It truly felt like a home away from home. Highly recommended!
Great place to stay at and one of the best private accommodations you can get for this money in the area. It’s also a very clean place and always holds events for festivities from every culture.
Really good location, good staff and social spaces, security 24/7 etc
Overall a very nice building to live in, convenient for USW, the city centre, generally well maintained with access to see friends around the city. However, making new friends was limited due to many residents either having established groups or no interest in socializing. Could suggest some way of knowing residents socializing ways to live with people who's are similar (a question to answer for example)
The environment is very good, the room is particularly satisfied, especially the large French Windows, which are very few in the UK, the price is not high, and the floor is very high, the scenery is very good, and the reception attitude is good
very nice living environment, very nice and enthusiastic staff,I really love to live here,I also want to recommend this student apartment to the other students.
I’ve had a wonderful time here, and still have many months to go. This is my first experience with private student accommodation, despite being a final year masters student, and I must say I couldn’t have asked for anything better. It is a quiet but lively building and everyone who works here is incredibly friendly and helpful with any queries that you may have. I also love their generosity when it comes to different days, they give out a lot of free things for the students such as hot chocolate and sweets for halloween for example. It creates a loving sense of home even if you may be far away.
good accommodation, perfect location, would just say it’s quite pricey in terms of price per week & costs of for example wanting to park somewhere close, but i suppose thats what u get for being in the city centre
Great location, friendly staff!
It is a great place!!! The kitchen is really nice.🌸💕
The place is nice , the location is just in the city centre which is very convenient
It has been great living here, the location is great , the wifi is sometime off but overall it has been great
I like it it is so preety . Sibdhdhdydgjdks
Very good location but not so cheap
it is a lovely flat,i am really happy to live here to have my university life. The staffs are really kind and polite.
Good, worth staying for the entire life
Most of them are very good, the staff are very friendly and wish there could be more public space
Bridge street is in the centre of Cardiff which is so convenient.
Fascinating, it’s a good choice
very nice apartment!!!nice views
Honestly the best student accommodation I’ve stayed at. The rooms are stunning and the location is incredible. You’re across the road to the bus stop and St David’s! The management are so lovely and welcoming and there’s always something going on to get involved in! The management will always have a chat with you and it’s such a safe environment! I couldn’t be happier, and have rebooked for next year! X
Too noisy in the first floor common room sometimes in the evening, interrupting my sleeping
It basically meets my expectations for an apartment
I hope the table of Table Tennis should be indoor, beacause there is always strong window. And it's better if there is coffee or hot coco drink buffet in the social space as other apartments have one.
Very clean nice and and nice staff
Lovely windows even if it’s rather windy
Very lovely building and excellent value for money, whenever there is a maintenance issue, it is fixed within 24 hours the maintenance man is exceptional. Security are extremely helpful and friendly. I have had a couple of minor issues (as to be expected anywhere), with noise of a neighbour, however I believe this is rare within the building and I simply got bad luck. I would love to see a leaflet or poster or even a welcome talk at the start of the year showing us how to use all the facilities just as there is so many amazing things we can use here that I am still figuring out how to work certain things :)) Overall I would highly recommend, I wish I moved here earlier !!
A great experience over all, with extremely supportive staff. Located at one of the best areas with everything at walking distance. One of the most applauding things is celebrating all festivals for every international student.
Its located right in the city and the view from my room is amazing, its currently overlooking principality.
couldve been more better like more parties etc but otherwise its good
Good place for students. It is located in the city centre and hence close to stores.
When we moved in the room was in amazing condition, it is good value for money in a great location and the staff are really helpful and kind.
Great place. Great staff. Best locality.
Jonathan is amazing. Location is best and even room is perfect.
Good location, near supermarkets and commercial streets, with no shortcomings except that the elevator occasionally breaks down.Rich activities and good reception service. Room facilities are maintained in time and will be handled within one day after feedback on the resident APP.
My stay has been excellent, the app that I use to pay my rent helps me out a lot and I'm very happy with my room.
Accomodation is very good but should more socialising so that all student can intract with each other.
It’s my second year here. Love it
Even before moving in, I have been in correspondence with the staff at bridge street exchange and I have to note that they were really really pleasant and professional. My questions were always answered in due time, and the management staff has always went out of their way to resolve my queries and issues. In particular, I would like to thank the manager Phoebe, who is very responsible and efficient in her job. She make sure everything gets done and every problem is settled. My thanks also goes out to Josh and Megan who have been really friendly and helpful whenever we correspond. While this is the start of my stay here, I foresee it being an excellent and memorable one thanks to them. 5 stars!
If you like high floors and large floor-to-ceiling windows, Bridge Street Exchange will be your first choice. The disadvantage is that there is no TV in the room.
Really good value for money, very comfortable and convenient. 10 times better than the university accommodation for a similar price.
The staff downstairs are very welcoming, when I lost my passport when I first arrived, they helped me investigate CCTV and did their best to help me. They were also very helpful when picking up my delivery and sometimes when I forgot my keys, they would drop what they were doing and open the door for me after checking! Would recommend this flat, with its big comfortable floor to ceiling windows! I really recommend it!
Location is perfect, for social and education. The staff is lovely and friendly. The room is amazing and there is a lot of storage and space with a good view.
If I could afford it next year, I would come here again
Great location and environment
The most perfect place to live! Rooms are lovely, the staff are amazing! Absolutely cannot go wrong with bridge street
I love bridge exchange, it is home to me
I love bridge exchange, it’s always home to me
It's amazing, I've lived there for 2 years and the staff are so welcoming and kind. The social spaces are amazing.
I enjoy spending time in the social areas of the building they are welcoming and well maintained. This means that I don’t have any worries about hosting my friends for study sessions or hangouts.
It is a lovely place to live in the City Center. Walking distance to Cardiff University and University of South Wales. Everything is accessible by foot (train/bus station, supermarkets, small grocers, shopping mall, restaurants etc). A lovely reception team as well!
Really nice comfy rooms with lovely helpful staff. The pool room is a personal favourite. Met a group of close friends here in first year that I now live with in second year.
very good, every staff are all very friendly and kind, if you have any questions or problem they will help you very fast.
Bridge Street Exchange has been a more than comfortable home, with friendly staff and good security. There are always fun events, giveaways and freebies that cheer up your week. Small complaint is that the doors/fans/lifts etc are loud throughout the whole floor so hearing noise like that at night takes some getting used to. Other than that no complaints!
Verry happy with my accommodation, favourite thing about the room is the ceiling to floor windows !
住在这里十分方便,10min内玛莎Tesco俩超市,主要是中国留学生,建议多人间选择02/03房型的套间,落地窗日落简直不要太美,工作人员中有一位会说中文的华人小姐姐很nice
The front desk service is very good, the work attitude is serious, can provide help in time if there is any problem
大落地窗阳光非常足,尤其是高层,视野非常好,住在这里很舒服。周边的超市很近。
The best student accommodation i have lived
not too bad! Excellent services for students! Thanks!
地理位置优越 楼下就是玛莎和商场 安全,24小时安保。 落地窗,视野好。 暖气足
It should let students keep pets. Some international students don’t have to much social and if they can have a pet that will be perfect
非常好的地理位置,去市中心和超市都很方便,reception也非常nice,活动也非常多,不管是西方节日还是中国的节日,节日都很有氛围。high recommended.
The staffs are very lovely :))) They are so nice and helped me a lot! The accommodation is close to the city center. M&S is just 3 min on foot. What’s more it’s quite easy to make friends here😍
The staff were very friendly! Great views from the upper floors too!
I think the reception is kind and security is cute. BSE locates the city center and it is convenient to purchase goods and necessary food. Inside BSE, we have a lot of fun by the switch room and KTV room. That's so nice.
Very nice ,good price good service
Bridge is really close to M&S, within 3mins. So it is convenient for my daily life. The most important is that Bridge is a very safe place and the reception is pretty nice👍🏻
I am very appropriate all the receptionists give me the best environment of apartment. They have good service and attitude, give me a memorable experience live here. I hope there are more entertainment place in the future to make more friends together. Maybe you could creat a group chat of apartment online. Much appreciate it.
Coming here is the best choice I have ever made in Cardiff, the apartment environment, the location is very good. It also has a great view of Cardiff
Really good location and really nice team , Security mark is a really kind person, warm hearted. People who lives here no need to worry about safety problems.
如果让我再选一次还会选这里。If I were to choose an apartment again, I would choose here again.
Conveniently located in the heart of the city, the apartment has unique floor-to-ceiling Windows with great views every day at sunrise and sunset, and a singing room and a gym, There are many Chinese students living here. The staff is excellent and responsible.
To be completely honest, there are better accommodations for the same price or even cheaper. There is only one study room which everyone is always fighting over or keeping their stuff their as a way of 'unofficially reserving it' however the same people are always in there and its unfair. The study area is also above reception so there is always loud music and you can't hear anything. If there is an issue with flatmates - in particularly cleaning and things like that they are very unhelpful. The staff sometimes act like you are bothering them if you come to ask for a parcel or if you are locked out of your room and tell you to come back when they are less busy. The 'cinema room' is the only social space and is just a room with a small tv and people walking in and out because it is also the smoking area. To be fair its quite easy to sneak people in because of the back door which is how the virus was spreading in this building like wild fire. Windows in the room are big but bugs come in.
I have live in bridge street exchange for three years. The most amazing aspects of bridge street exchang is its‘ beautiful windows (although it is a little bit annoying when raining)and friendly staff
Excellent 公寓特别好,很安全,位置便利,环境优美,Amy人特别好!
The staffs are so nice. The room is perfect.A Nice place to live.
Amazing, great friendly staff always there to chat
The room is bright enough but sometimes other people can go into our ensuit without perimition which making lots of noise of the door.
管理不错,前台服务好,并且定时打扫公共区域卫生,有独立的健身房让我感觉很不错
Good value for money. Lots of facilities
It is a great place to live, there are many supermarkets, shops and restaurants.
Is a great place for students to stay in for their academic year.Very friendly staff and a pretty nice view if you live on a higher floor.
One of the best places you could live as a student in Cardiff at an affordable price. Right in the heart of city centre and only 15 minutes walk to Cardiff Uni buildings and SU. The rooms are so spacious with really modern ensuites as well as a great kitchen to cook food. The internet is brilliant and NEVER faults or buffers. And above all, the reception and security staff are all lovely, always there to help and of course collect parcels!
Very friendly staff. Great services i.e. gym, study area, games area. Rooms are quite small considering the price. Almost sound proof rooms is a bonus. Location is ideal for city centre shopping/activities but quite far from Cathays where other students tend to live.
