Overall, it is a great place in terms of location. I feel safe staying here, being in the same flat as other MA students helps too. The maintenance of the building is not bad, although often only 1 lift is working, the wait is usually not too long. Laundry facilities are sufficient if you plan your time correctly. Public areas are usually clean and tidy.

All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation
What tenancy length do I need?
Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
Should I stay in catered student accommodation?
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
What is a guarantor and do I need one?
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
What bills will my rent include?
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
What is purpose-built student accommodation?
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Will my student accommodation be furnished?
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

Marketgate is an amazing location and has a great sense of community. It is however very expensive for what is a very old fashioned building, we could do with new appliances, more timely repairs, more social/ study spaces and reliable infrastructure (e.g. keycard apps and lifts working).
Alright, the corner rooms are stupidly laid out, without any thought in the design, receptionists are cool as well
overall quite a positive experience
quite expensive for what it is, nice atmosphere however many maintenance issues
overall been a very good experience
Overall, it’s a nice property but lighting could do better and it would be nice if there’s desk light in every room.
Good location, best of the flats in city centre, but many issues in the flat and thing aren’t fixed very quickly or at all.
overpriced and the corridor usually smells, but i love mark
Overall it’s okay, but always room for improvement. Too expensive for what it’s worth as well
Marketgate has done its job, i have met most of my friends here and am very grateful for that. My room is a good size but there’s a lack of light in my room which was slightly disappointing. I also felt for the price it was not really worth it.
Solid. However I have been harassed by the manager, Miles, twice for ‘unpaid rent’ when my rent was all up to date. In the first instance, Miles was in my flat dealing with another matter concerning one of my roommates - but knocked on my door to collect rent. I had to invite Miles into my room to speak privately or else I’d be announcing my financial situation to the rest of my flat. The second instance happened in the elevator with a receptionist present while she and Miles were going around collecting unpaid rent. The receptionist backed me up by confirming I was not on the list of tenants to collect rent from.
lovely staff but outdated kitchens and bathrooms needs some maintenance before the next students
Great location, rooms a bit small but have everything you need, kitchen facilities are decent, perfect for people who wants to live in the centre
STAFF ARE OUTSTANDING, shoutout to Daisy, Coel, Summer and the rest. The best. Rooms are alright. Good socially.
Never any hot water. Issue was flagged multiple times but shower still goes cold after 5-10 minutes. Also the ventilation is not good enough. I’m constantly having to remove mould from shower and window area.
My kitchen door is still broken, from the first week. Love daisy, summer and mark
Staff take too long to fix issues and theres multiple issues with utilities. Great room size and amazing location but so many issues that you wouldn’t notice as a passer by. Staff are rarely at the reception desk to help with issues, and this can be for hours at a time and no idea where they go. Washing is expensive too.
great accom besides the flooding showers that no one is dealing with
Overall, it is a great place in terms of location. I feel safe staying here, being in the same flat as other MA students helps too. Marketgate is a nice accommodation in the heart of Bristol City centre. Living standard is totally fine but sadly is far from the "premium" accommodation they claim to offer. Everything is functional but basic. My main issue with the building is its management - Unite students charge huge rent and do not deliver accommodation which reaches this price point. When I moved in there were numerous issues with my room which took Unite nearly a month to fully resolve.
We are very sorry to hear that you had a less than ideal experience when you arrived at Marketgate. While providing our Students with a great service is our priority, the feedback here regarding response times is noted and we will take this to our Facilities Management team and ensure any system errors are resolved. Check-in is always a busy time and we are aware it can take a bit longer for us to resolve things at the start of the year, however we want everyone to feel listened to and to ensure our property is to the standards we expect. Our "premium" rooms offer a larger bed size than the "classic" ensuite rooms. Classic has a single bed and the premium have a small double bed. Marketgate is not as new as some of our other properties in Bristol however we still strive to provide accommodation for students that is up to a great standard and feels like home! Thank you for leaving us this review, we are glad you like the location as much as we do! You can get into the shopping centre in less than two minutes, and the bus stop to UWE Frenchay campus is only a five minute walk. If you are looking for something with a higher spec you can check out some of our Studios available in 24/25 here: Unite Students. Faye :)
Good place, well kept and nice staff too would recommend
Very convenient that cabot and the bus stations are near Place could be cleaner and maintenance be quicker
Just too expensive for what it is!
My room is nice and cosy, I only have 3 flatmates which is fab. The guys at the office are all really nice and have helped me in a pinch multiple times:)

It’s a good accommodation overall however if the rent was abit less it would’ve been more worth it because in my opinion I think that the rent is too much. :)
Thank you for leaving us this review, we like to hear your feedback! We understand the cost of living in Bristol is high at the moment and we are working behind the scenes on projects to keep improving Marketgate! All our prices include all the bills and we have staff on site 24/7 all year round which provides a safe space for you to live. Do come and give us more feedback at reception (we have a suggestions box) so we can put all your ideas into the mix! Thank you again for your review.
Bit expensive but good location and space
Thank you for taking the time to leave us this reviw, we are glad you like the location and the space you have here! We undertsand the cost of living in Bristol is a lot and going up, we hope our services make it worth the money and we have a large team of staff working throughout the year to maintain great standards of accommodation for students to ensure value for money is good. All the bills are included in your rent, and we have a wifi router in each flat to ensure the service is goodenough to study in your room. The staff is very friendly and the location is great.
Thank you for your review - we like to hear your feedback - and we agree that our location is fantastic for student life in Bristol! We are just minutes away from the shopping centre, there are several pubs and nightclubs really close by, and the transport links are excellent to other parts of Bristol and to UWE campus. We have staff onsite 24hours a day 365 days a year! Our staff are committed to keeping you safe in your home, and to solving any issues you may have! You can contact us on the MyUnite app, by phone, email, or by coming down to reception.
I have had a good nice experience at marketgate since I have moved in, with most maintenance issues I've had being resolved quickly.
Thank you for your review, we are glad you are having a good expereince living with us at Marketgate! Our maintennace team are in the City evey day ensuring things are resolved in a timely mannor and to a good standard, please keep us updated with any maintenance issues you may have on our MyUnite App, you can also track the progress of the job there too. Thank you again for this review!
Its good and central but very expensive and not very spacious
Thank you for taking the time to leave us this review. We are glad to hear you like the location, we are so lucky to have a really central location at Marketgate, right accross from Cabot Circus shopping centre. We are sorry to hear you aren't fully satisfied with the price or size, we undestand your concerns as living in such a central location can come with these factors. Being in a highly saught after Bristol location will come with higher prices but we aim to provide a great service for our Students. Having all the bills included and staff on site 24/7 are just two of the biggst pros to living with us. Marketgate is one of our largest properties in Bristol and we are fortunate to have multiple large communal lounges including a cinema room, a pool table and table tennis table which you can hire out to enjoy with friends. Thank you again, we hope that the rest of your time here is great!
Good service, nice experience The repairman successfully helped me fix the sewer pipe
Thank you for this review! We are glad you are enjoying your time here at Marketgate! To extend your time with Unite Students check out the few remaining spaces for next year's accommodation here: 24/25 Unite Students. Feel free to speak to us on site for more information on booking again with us!
Things are at the normal level.
Thank you for you review. We like to hear your feedback and are always looking for ways we can improve and ensure we provide a great home for our students.
£1,209.00 for a 4x4 and dirty flatmates. The staff are really nice though.
Thank you for the feedback and for leaving this review! We like to encourage our Students to come and chat to staff on site about any social issues in your flat, we can support you and your flatmates to work together to keep the kitchen looking spotless! Of course we will do the monthly kitchen inspection soon, perhaps that will promt them to clean up.
There’s so many different kinds of people so it’s refreshing every time you bump into someone. All the staff are great, especially Daisy on reception- always making sure everyone’s in good spirits. Rooms are nice and windows are a good size.
Thank you so much for your review. We love to hear about your experiences and your feedback about Marketgate. City accomodation brings people from all over the world, we run regular events in our Common Room to provide more chances for you to socialise with other people and try things from different cultures. We are also fortunate to have large bedrooms considering the central location we are in. Thank you again for this review!
Great location, and good vibes.
Thank you for leaving us this review! We have enjoyed getting to know our students this year 23/24, good vibes indeed. Keep an eye on our events board in reception to know what social events are coming up soon!
The place is 5 stars and let me not forget about the people.
Thank you! This review means a lot to us. We agree that Marketgate has a great social atmosphere and with the events that go on in our common room there is something for everyone!
Marketgate is a great place especially for first years in the city. Buses and grocery is close. Only issue is elevators breaking and a bit of moisture/mold in rooms but i think that’s everywhere in England!
Thank you for your review, we are so lucky to be right in the City Centre at Marketgate! Thank you for the feedback on the lifts, we have an exciting project going on behind the scenes to replace our lift technology to ensure any issues are resolved for our Students in the coming months. Keep in touch with us via our My Untite app for any maintenance issues you may have, we will seek to resolve them efficiently for you.
Good place, looks way better inside than it does outside! Right in the heart of the city which is great for First Year students for nights out and general shopping. Not to far on the bus to get to university (bus stop right outside halls door)
its like a prison, not the fun party halls that it once was (some staff are rude unfriendly & strict) u meet gd amount of people and location is banging but thats only positives.
Well-equipped room with great storage. Good maintenance app and service.
Unite are the worst I would avoid them at all costs. About to be charged an excess 150 pound cleaning fee for a flat I didn’t stay in lool.
Marketgate is the place to be if you want to party and do drugs all the time so if you're here for that, then you'll fit right in. For the rest of us that want an education, it's a very dingy and shifty place to be. The day staff don't take noise complaints etc seriously and the night staff are intimidating. Drum and bass can be heard practically most nights and the walls are thin so getting a good nights sleep is hard. Living next to a busy road always makes everything a lot louder too. The fire alarms go off most days for no aparent reason and the one of the lifts is always broken. Washing and drying is super expensive for what it is. The place is big but crowded and there's no sense of community. The only reason I survived living here was because I spent most days and nights in uni and other student accommodation to avoid Mgate as much as pos (only coming back to sleep/get ready). I cant wait to get out of here in a month or so, Marketgate sucks.
As I am off campus I really enjoy the freedom. A friendly neighbourhood
Loved this halls. Met so many friends. A little druggie so not one if you don’t like a lot of noise. However, there were quiet nights too. Great location and you feel safe and secure.
Mad and intense but worth it for first year
Marketgate is a dark and dingey accommodation. There is no sense of community and this place took a huge toll on my mental health. My flat mates were disrespectful. Drum and Bass played constantly through the nights. The noise from the upstairs made it hard to concentrate on my work so i often had to go to cafes to work. The 'study space' is uncomfortable and cold- you do not want to spend a lot of time down there. The staff don't take complaints seriously. You wake up in darkness and fall asleep in darkness. The night staff are rude and intimidating. Honestly i don't have anything nice to say about this place, i am thankful i do not have to step foot in there again.
Only lasted two weeks before moving home. Not very good for money and far away from UWE. But good location for town
Mgate is definitely the place to be during first year at UWE. If your courses are at Arnolfini then you can't get much better than this. Bower is 20 mins away. The rooms themselves are great - big desks with plenty of storage (shelves, cupboards and a massive space under the bed. All rooms have large windows and every other room has a window directly over the desk which is great to do artwork in daylight. The beds aren't the best quality - but it's somewhere to sleep - I'd get a mattress topper. The bathroom is basically a sink with hot & cold water, a towel rack, a small shelf, toilet and a shower - with the worst shower head as it just sprays out like someone is having a piss on you - but it's hot. The amount of students in your flats varies, kitchen sizes also vary. If you're not a social butterfly, don't come here.. there's music all the time and the walls are thin. This is the place to party - don't expect anything else. Reception staff are ALWAYS happy to help.
Almost all praise I can give this accommodation should go to the staff as they were wonderful and friendly throughout. My biggest complaint would be that when my bike was stolen in Dec, they not only would not let me see the footage so that I could pass it on (as requested by the police), but still have not told me any more information on what they are doing about it. (It is now the end of July and I have been moved out for over a month). They were also quiet slow at the beginning to provide me with basic stuff and it was several months before my mattress was replaced with a working one and I received a post box key.
Like most student halls Marketgate is expensive but in this case it's definitely worth the money if your aim is to make lots of new friends who are also a fan of the sesh. It's central which means most clubs are not far to walk to and there is a 24 hour off licence less than 5 minutes away which is handy because you never know when you might need more alcohol or noodles or rizlas etc .. The common room boasts a pool table, ping pong table and a table football along with a big telly and some sofas and chairs that are less uncomfortable than the ones they give you in your communal kitchen/ living area. The smoke alarms do go off but only if you burn something really really badly when cooking so as long as you hide the evidence before the weekly visit of the cleaner, it's fine to smoke in the flats. If you're not much of a drinker and like to be in bed by eleven then you should probably live somewhere else unless you enjoy the feeling of being isolated and alone.
Everything is great except the price
If you have the opportunity to spend your first year of uni in marketgate then you would be silly not to!! Best place to make friends of all the halls and security are the most relaxed (and friendly). The location is ideal only 10 minute walk to most decent clubs. Cabot circus and castle park are just across the road plus very regular buses straight to frenchay. Everyone who I meet in first year who live elsewhere, wish they lived here.
I remember the first time I saw Marketgate, I had gone down to Bristol a week or so before I was due to move in and was looking for my new home for the next year. I saw the address on my phone and looked around at my surrounding and thought 'It must be near this huge horrible brown building'. Much to my surprise, it was that huge horrible brown building! I was happy to learn, its much nicer on the inside. Marketgate is a great place to live for the student who loves their social life. Although the price tag may seem a bit much, you couldn't ask for a better location. It is right next to Cabot Circus and most of the best clubs are a ten minute walk from your front door. Your friends on campus will be begging to come to yours for predrinks or an after party. Buses run to campus from just across the road, meaning you can still make your 9ams. There are so many students living in the building, its hard not to find someone you know from your course or your hometown.
If you're after the best first year possible Matketgate is where it's at. The most social of all the accommodation, everyone knows it's the place to be if you're here to get messy! Great location bus to uni is on doorstep. Warning campus accommodation is for melts.
I have a studio flat, and my god it's horrendous, you can hear everything outside your door, drunk people often knock on your door thinking its a 6 people flat so they knock quite loud, the room is next to the lift so you can hear the lifts going up and down 24/7, people knocking on other flat doors are genuinely so annoying, single bed is so ideal when your girlfriend is round (I joke I joke) the security lights are so annoying, on 24/7 lights up the whole room at night, fire alarms seem to go off every day I have off. Hot water doesn't last for more than 15 minutes, so if you take your time in the shower I hope you don't mind cold showers. The wifi is shocking, they say 25mbps wifi but it's more like 1mbps, that's if you're lucky. I'm paying a hell of a lot of money for this flat, somewhere between 6-8 thousand pounds, and in return I get not much really. The room is built specifically so that wheelchair users can have access to everything, so trying to clean the dishes just hurts :/
Friendly staff, but they hardly do what they are supposed to (eg fix things). The rooms are okay sized, the kitchen depends on what side of the building you are in, but generally quite large. Windows don't open all the way..
Amazing for parties and socialising, great location (right in the city centre). Tends to be very dirty, not a great place to study as it's always noisy and there's likely to be a party going on in your flat on any given day.
there is never a dull day in marketgate
Studio rooms are a joke. No cleaners, lonely, you can hear everything from the corridor and they can hear you. No warden so there are often loud groups of randomers lurking around in the night. I've had my door dented and glass smashed just outside it in the corridor. This and the endless banging on doors keeps me up all night - there's no doorbells that work. The 24/7 loud music from flat parties isn't good either! I can always hear the utility pipes and boilers, not to mention that my room has a boiler in it, perhaps that's also why I'm left with a single bed - I pay 7.2 grand a year for this. My studio has security lighting in the bedroom which keeps me up and I have to try to cover it. Let's not forget that the fire alarm goes off a ridiculous amount of times and at any time of day for up to 20 minutes -oftenseries of 1min alarms/week. Maintenance checks r untrue. I enjoyed my stay at Marketgate however it was far too expensive for what it was. I had one of the three person flats and the kitchen was as thin as a bowling alley!!! Overall I liked marketgate but this wasn't because of the building or the facilities but because of the people.
Have barely slept since moving here due to a nightmare flat mate, no amount of complaints has made a difference. Very expensive for not a lot of perks. However the staff are lovely :)
fun, lots of friends, large rooms, helpful reception staff, enjoyable, amazing location
A year of skanking your face off to deep house surrounded by bucket hats
Pretty much left to your own devices and in the middle of the city there's a lot of freedom, it's a great place to live but very expensive.
If people treated the place and others nicely it wouldn't be a bad place to live
Going to university is a daunting process. Moving away from home and having to make new friends is terrifying. I found living at Marketgate really helpful for getting to know new people and not feeling so alone. People are around you all the time and being in the city centre is extremely useful. The facilities might not be top notch and it feels like you're getting a little ripped off, but sadly all student accommodation is very expensive! I've found my room to be very nice and comfortable. You have to bare in mind that the building is huge so there are a lot of people around you, making it noisy sometimes. But as i've said, most student accommodation is like this! The night life is brilliant in Bristol so being so close to everything is amazing! Cabot Circus is also right round the corner as well as Castle Park. I've had a very good experiance at Marketgate and recommend it to first years.
