All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation

What tenancy length do I need?

Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.

Should I stay in catered student accommodation?

This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.

What is a guarantor and do I need one?

A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.

Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?

Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.

What bills will my rent include?

If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.

What is purpose-built student accommodation?

Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.

Will my student accommodation be furnished?

Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

Really well managed and organised. I have loved living here and I have lived in a lot of student accommodation’s before this and this one has been my favourite. Very good value for money , the location is amazing.

The office team are the best & really supportive of students! Great esp for students from disadvantaged backgrounds - didn't have to pay rent till student loan came in, previous experiences weren't as great with this. Lovely local parks around including Victoria Park and smaller local ones. Tesco within walking distance.

Really lovely accommodation for a very reasonable price (all bills included) - I have lived here for 2 years as a part time student and can't fault my experience. There is a nice sense of community, easy transport options, all post and security is handled really well, there are excellent facilities on site (laundry room, irons, bike sheds) and free events like a Christmas market and free fruit Friday. I recommend it to anyone studying postgraduate degrees in London.

Thoroughly enjoyed my time here at Claredale House! Very friendly office staff and maintenance team always willing to help with any issues. Room was nice and cosy along with a good sized kitchen and bathroom (the showers are amazing!). The window in my room was a little small so depends where you get assigned but that didn't really matter to me. WiFi was superb, location in Bethnal Green is ideal for getting to various places in London with buses and tubes nearby. The social life is also very friendly! Flatmates and other residents come from all sorts of places and were always hosting mini gatherings if you wanted to meet new people (i.e. students from the UK, US, India, Romania, Italy, China to name a few). Safe bike/car parking if you needed. So all in all, excellent value for money when you think about the cost of living in London and the perfect place for postgrad students looking for a quiet but friendly place to study!
