All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation
What tenancy length do I need?
Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
Should I stay in catered student accommodation?
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
What is a guarantor and do I need one?
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
What bills will my rent include?
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
What is purpose-built student accommodation?
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Will my student accommodation be furnished?
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

The value of the accommodation was good. I enjoyed living at Purbeck House as the rooms were fairly big, I had my own ensuite, and I had lots of cupboard space in the kitchen. All Lansdowne accommodation at Bournemouth University have an ensuite included in the rooms, which I thought was very good when being self sufficient. Students were responsible for keeping their own flats clean and this was good in a responsibility sense. I would recommend Purbeck House to prospective students.
Living here for the past year has created so many memories for me. I am so grateful to have moved into Purbeck
The building itself is more than adequate with fun activities being hosted and a fun social space in addition to good sized rooms. Lovely staff and living space only issue with broken lifts.
I‘ve had a really good experience staying in Purbeck. The staff at the reception are wonderful and helped me.
Very good student accommodation, the staff are friendly and make your time here good. The walls here are VERY thin you can hear your flatmates talking through them. The WiFi is pretty bad enough to run films etc but if you want to game at all it’s not good enough.
Overall Purbeck is a lovely first year accommodation, easy to make friends, staff are friendly and always happy to help. Only thing i would say walls are very thin as you can hear your flat mates conversations through the walls. But great place to socialise and location is perfect.
Really good place to live for first year! Staff are amazing and social activities are good! Rooms are good too!
Best first year accommodation for socialising and making new friends! Even the staff are nice especially Dave.
Excellent accommodation, friendly and helpful staff, really fast Internet, good facilities
Purbeck was better than I thought it would be. The staff have been lovely especially Dave who I always look forward to seeing. My room was spacious and clean. Kitchens have everything you need ans are bigger than expected. I would recommend Purbeck to anyone

Overall, I had a great experience at Purbeck. Honestly all the staff are so lovely, you really do end up having lovely chats with all the day and night time staff, Dave is an absolute gem 💎 so friendly, so amazing :) in terms of my flat and kitchen and stuff, not going to lie quite a few thing did break and were not very stable/secure, again no complaints though I guess that’s just uni ahaha Ps- the laundry >:( not good, all clothes always came out either dirty or soaked
Thank you for your feedback, we will make sure that the Washing Machine get checked . We are glad that you enjoyed staying with us, it was very nice meeting you and we are wishing you all the best for the future. Dont hesitate to come to say hi if you are around. All the best, The Purbeck House Team.

I have had a great time staying in purbeck. Dave has been the best all year always there no matter what even if it’s just a chat. The beds could be bigger but this hasn’t ruined my experience. I would highly recommend the accommodation to future students
Thank you for your feedback, we are wishing you a great summer and all the best for the future. The Purbeck Team. :)
Very fun living here and the reception are nice
Purbeck House is home to many amazing members of staff that care about the students fully and without the staff it would be an average acom by Bournemouth standards but due to staff members like Jackie and azif
Great place for first year student accommodation. Only issue I have had is with how thing the walls are.
Brilliant customer service and care, issues get resolved very quickly
dave in office so kind and so is Asif maintenance man
Great, really fast service and great staff always helped when In need
Big up Nick, Kat, Davidooo smitherino, and Joan. Have made purbeck the best!
All the staff that work there are so nice especially Dave smith who makes me feel so welcome and always makes me laugh
The staff are extremely helpful and very friendly. They are always there to help you with anything you need. Once when the wifi was down delphine managed to get in touch with the wifi contractors and 2 days kater a mechanic came and fixed it, eifhout me even asking which was extremely lovely of her
I have spent the last 9 months at Purbeck House, and I have loved every minute. The staff are absolutely lovely (they’re around 24/7!), the place is kept together, the cleaning is spot-on, and the price is amazing (the room is bigger than some halls too!). Amazing value-for-money considering. Sure the building is old and the curtains in the rooms may look a little dated, it’s honestly part of the charm. Noise can also be an issue but every halls has this problem. I hear all-sorts from people in other halls and I’m glad I picked Purbeck. The only thing I will say if you’re planning to move in, is to make sure to take pictures of everything and of your room and the kitchen, even if you don’t spot anything, because thanks to me taking pictures I have evidence of marks that were pre-existing. The 4 stars for wifi is it occasionally has issues, but they’ve just done an upgrade and I’ve noticed none since. It’s very fast wifi too, and there is an Ethernet port in each room.
I have been trying to get a refund of money I have in my UniteAccount for 2 and a half months and still I havent seen a single pound nor a confirmation from them saying when I will get my money back. Would not recommend Purbeck House if you dont want to stress about money issues and transactions.
Purbeck is 100% the party halls of BU, the courtyard makes it easy to meet friends in the first couple of weeks. B block is also the superior block no lie
Great accommodation! Could not say anything bad about this place at all. I spent my first year here and had the best time ever. The rooms are a great size, single beds, but still a modern and homely feel. Internet was brilliant and super reliable. Price is cheaper than most but doesn't feel cheap at all. I recommend choosing a room above Floor 3 and in B Block for a bigger kitchen and better view.
Best halls & value for money, would really recommend if you don’t want to spend loads on halls but want somewhere lively as it’s such a good place to live. Staff are really caring & sort out issues quickly, easy to meet up with people and I barely heard noise from other flats the time I was there. Perfect location and there are lots of socials in the common room & things going on all the time. B block is the louder side

Purbeck is the best accommodation if you're looking for a lively one. Predrinks are always the best there, even others from different accommodation agree. It has a homely feel to it. During my time there I've made a giant group of friends living the building. Very close to all the clubs only a short walk. The staff are friendly and always helpful. There are only 3 downfall, which is the wifi kinda bad but so are most accommodations, the walls are pretty thin and the lifts can break. However, if I had to choose again where to live. I wouldn't choose anywhere else and highly recommend it.
Covid-19: Cancelled the contract.
The security in halls was 24/7 they were never intrusive and always friendly, they would often have a laugh with us. They deal with any complaints swiftly and are always there to help. My particular flat had very dated furniture in the living areas although they were in the process of renovating some things in other flats.
Unite students came into my room this morning while I was asleep, without notice and then threatened to throw me out the window. No joke. I'm on the 11th floor.
Try and get a corner flat on floor 4 and above they are the best kitchens. 6 bedroom flats are definitely worth it more space 2 fridges and 2 sinks trust me you need it!! Get a good mobile plan because WiFi sometimes goes down. Location is amazing!!! Near beach, Asda, bus stop and not far from other accoms. Higer floors (floor 9) have weird bathrooms (no locks and no shower head) I lived on floor 4 and would say it's a pretty safe bet. Block A can't get into block B but there is always someone in the courtyard. Overall great experience living in Purbeck visited other halls and they really don't have the same fun atmosphere as Purbeck. Laundry is very pricey £3 for a basic wash which doesn't include dryer and there isn't many washers either.
Lots of fit girls and parties. Would recommend
I have been living here for 5 months at the moment and i completely love it here, i’m so in love with my room, and have made it completely my own place, there’s so much storage and my kitchen/lounge is such good size too. it’s in such a good area with everything so close by, and the nightlife is nearby and so good, with purbeck being known for pre drinks. highly recommend living here i love it so much and feel so safe and comfortable
A terrible place to live in. Very loud music and very obnoxious people. They won't let you sleep until 4 am, and security does nothing to put an end to this. If you want to party 24/7 and have alcoholic and drug addicts around you, this is your place. If not, avoid this place.
Loved every minute of halls. I wish I could have lived there for the full 4 years.
The worst accommodation. Just trying get your money. No proper service, manager does not know about anything
Didn't stay in halls for masters but did for undergrad and it was good.
Great halls that give the opportunity for everyone to become friends.
Basically, the most shabby rundown accommodation out of the lot I've seen, but the centre of everything you'll want as a student in Bournemouth with the best atmosphere.
It is in the perfect location to go into town and right by a bus stop for uni but for the price of it the accommodation itself is very basic and now particularly nice.
Lovly space to stay, although this is the building for all the party's. You can often hear music coming for other rooms in the halls around you at 3 in the morning!
If you are lucky enough to get good housemates, then it's a pretty decent place to stay. It's got easy access to town and across the road from the bus stop to uni. The flats are pretty modern, but the seats in the kitchen /common room area are the most uncomfortable things ever!
Best halls in Bournemouth or closeness to night life and bus routes. But the company behind it, Unite will bleed you dry of any money you have. Be weary when you move in and take photos of everything. But apart from that it will be the best experience of your life!
staff are poor and try every trick in the book to get money off of you, a girl in my flat broke one stool which were very old anyway and on there way out and we got charged £32 for that single stool! Also over Christmas we forgot to take the bins out and got charged £40 for this, although the location is unbelievable being waking distance from all nightclubs, pubs, beaches and so close to other uni halls as well so all of your mates are very close! Socially amazing, but unfortunately I believe you'd get ripped off at the majority of university halls you will move into nowadays
the halls was great fun having everything in walking distance, excellent value for money however it was always quite a mess, but what do you expect for students who are constantly going out? Town and the beach are close and the coop and Asda are a minute walk away, Bournemouth has excellent hall accommodation which are all on the bus routes which makes first year such a doss!
