All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation
What tenancy length do I need?
Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
Should I stay in catered student accommodation?
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
What is a guarantor and do I need one?
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
What bills will my rent include?
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
What is purpose-built student accommodation?
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Will my student accommodation be furnished?
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

Maintenance team is outstanding, special thanks to Neel, Terry, and others for always resolving the maintenance issues faster than expected.
Central Quay is wonderful accommodation to be and I promise to recommend the accommodation to any of friend, any time, any day.
It has a good cost-benefit balance. It's not so close to my University, but the area is really good. Close enough to facilities and city centre.
Great place to live while at uni :)
Lived here for 2 of my years at uni, can't complain value for moneys excellent and the staff are more than welcoming
Amazing place to stay couldn’t recommend more! All treat us like family at reception! Big shout out to Charlie, dannielle, Siobhan and Lisa!!

I’m a huge fan of Central Quay, so I’ve already booked a room for the next few years and invited all my friends to live there. I can’t say enough good things about the staff there, especially Charlie. He’s super friendly and always goes out of his way to help us out. Thanks and i love all ( CQ team ).
Perfect accommodation for students. Friendly staff.
Everything you need in student accomodation and at a very reasonable price. Staff were friendly and really helpful, Wifi is excellent, and there's free parking! Spent my 1st year here and would really recommend it for new students.
Central quay promised me for refund of my deposit after all the pleading to them as I was unable to travel due to covid19 crisis and bad health. They were initially unable to process saying there is some technical error, after following up for more than a month, they did not revert to any of mu mail. They have disappointed me after being all professional while taking in booking and then suddenly ghosting me after approving my refund request. If my review reaches you I kindly request you CNETRAL QUAY people to kindly reach out to me. I plead to you to show be more considerate of my hard earned money. Thank you.
I have made an online booking for student accommodation for sept 2020. However as I am unable to make it this year because of uncertain covid19 times, CQ has denied my request for refund of deposit fees. I requested ! Pleaded and told them about my situation. , even gave the option of at least postpone my date if no refund, but are adamant that deposit money won’t be refunded because that is as per their rules. It makes me wonder in current situation where we all are equally going through this pandemic and financial strain situation , CQ wants to make Zero modifications to their policies. For this only reason I will not recommend CQ , because if this is the attitude when times are difficult I wonder what will it be once I’m there. I will request CQ staff or head to kindly reach to my this review. I am not defaming your accommodation services , but there will be many other students like me who won’t be able to make it just because of pandemic and we expect you to understand us! Thankyou.
Stupidly chose to live here again in second year, one of the worst decisions of my life
Flats on interior a bit dark but not too bad. Decent bedroom size with en-suite is bonus. Location is okay not far too from uni (city campus) 15 mins. Near kelham island which is an incoming place with lots of cool puns/bars/restaurants/food and drink markets etc however can be expensive Small gym is nice but basic. Have to pay for washing but that’s the norm. Small Tesco is downstairs which is useful. Shirt drive form a big Tesco.
good staff and nice flat mates
Way too far from uni, the place itself its nice but it’s not worth the uphill walking everyday
Great halls! Comfortable, modern living.
Good cheap accommodation with a car park
It is very good although it’s quite a track from main campus
Central Quay honestly outdid my expectations, the main thing I see people complain about is the walk to uni (it’s only 10 mins is really not that bad). The area of CQ is perfect it’s located in Kelham Island which is a great area of Sheffield with lots going in with events such as the Pedlers night market along with many nice local pubs. The staff are super friendly and very helpful as well as them organising fun thing to do such as a quiz with prizes, fifa competitions, pool competitions and BBQs. I’m comparison to other accommodations the value for money is so good especially considering you get your own bathroom and the proximity to a Tesco. The pool table and other games are free. Overall I have had an excellent time at Central Quay and would recommend it to anyone.
Good location but that's about it. The so called gym isn't worth anything, especially if you go to The gym on a regular basis this would be highly disappointing. The only thing you can do is cardio in there and even this leave a lot to wish for with no modern treadmills. Another thing, you have to pay to use washing machine, so yeah "all-bills included" is not so true... You will spend fortune on your washing... Internet is the worst thing on earth, I have to call the internet support team like every week to solve issues with connecting my laptop and my PlayStation, plus it is ridiculously slow once you connect. My 3G on my phone is faster than that "50mbps" wifi. So in the most important moments of your studies it can let you down, especially if you leave your assignment until the last minute. The showers are awful, keep blocking and the whole bathroom is made of cheap plastic so forget about design.. It feels like you're on a boat. Heaters are rubbish, had to buy an additional one.
Great place, very cool area just not that near to the campus. great staff though!
Great people who work here and good facilities
Brilliant for people with cars, top security and great place to just jump on the motorway
Lovely, modern accommodation with plenty of facilities at a low cost. Staff are very helpful/friendly and everything is kept to a high standard of cleanliness - for student living, that is! Only drawbacks are the distance from Sheffield Hallam University (20 minute walk) can be a pain, especially being away from the student/clubbing nightlife. On the whole however, this halls is a good choice, especially if you like to keep yourself to yourself and study for a degree, rather than live for the student life like myself.
Really nice rooms and kitchen areas, there's six of us though so we got an extra fridge freezer. Everyone at reception is really nice, always security there to help. Maintenance smartphone app is really good as well. Location is a bit far out compared to others, but still only a 10 min walk to city centre and 15 min walk to hallam.
Although it is a bit of a trek from city campus, i believe it is a lot better quality than the one's closer. Lots of communal areas and facilities, and the wifi is very good
Nice halls ruined by location.
Best first year experience because of these halls . Free pool table ! Your experience is what you make it
Lovely halls, very sociable only problem I would have is its location!
very far from uni and isn't very modern. But has a gym next to the common room area (£10 for the year!) so average overall.
Flats are high quality and fantastic value for money but the location is out of the way. It's good but there are better halls for Hallam.
Good value for money We have our own cleaner Social life is really good
Nice place but far from the uni compared to the rest of halls
Filthy, overpriced, and the wifi is a con job! Avoid at all costs!!
It's an alright place to live, a bit far from city campus but a nice area. Rooms are pretty standard and kitchen area is too.
Quite far from the city centre and the universities, but very well run with very helpful staff.
Such good parties, and good because its so big. Gyms not bad, and Kelham Island is a great place to live
Value is great as all bills are included. It is located 20 min walk away from the town centre which is a fair distance compared to other halls. Didnt clean the flats at all here, that was down to you. The common room was quite small really, not much space
