All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation
What tenancy length do I need?
Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
Should I stay in catered student accommodation?
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
What is a guarantor and do I need one?
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
What bills will my rent include?
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
What is purpose-built student accommodation?
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Will my student accommodation be furnished?
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

Good accommodation but no social space. Decent size of the rooms and excellent service.
Good location to campus, just a bit far away from major grocery stores.
Best place for post graduates. Quite, clean and fast wifi.
Really nice, clean. Love the staffs that come over and clean every Monday (Bruce is super friendly!!)
I was the first to move into our floor, and from the very first day, I was struck by how spotless and well-maintained everything was—the kitchen, bathrooms, and rooms were all exceptionally clean. This left a great first impression and set the tone for what has turned out to be a wonderful experience. What makes this place truly special is the bond among my roommates. We’ve celebrated birthdays, exchanged holiday greetings, and even left thoughtful notes for one another. One of my favorite moments was receiving a box of cookies from a roommate with a note on top that said, “Don’t push yourself too hard; you are good enough.” That small gesture made me feel truly supported and appreciated. Additionally, the quiet surroundings make it easy to focus, and weekly cleaning keeps the shared areas tidy and welcoming. Any maintenance issues we’ve reported have been resolved quickly and efficiently, which adds to the overall convenience. Being so close to school is another huge plus.
It is an amazing experience to live here, great cleaner and great space
it was very private and good location near the university, however there is lacking places to get groceries, in general i would recomend it .

Pros: I lived in Cloister for 2 years. I loved my time here. I was blessed to have amazing flatmates in 1st year and we created many memories (often stayed in the kitchen chatting away, eating together or playing games). The room has lots of storage space, and a basin and I had a lovely view of the back garden. The kitchen is big and spacious, and I enjoyed cooking there, often watching the ducks and swans from the windows. Cloister is a great place if you enjoy peace and quiet. The tram stops and bus links are close by. It's within walking distance to uni park campus and a short walk away from Lakeside. Broadgate is quick to fix any issues. Cons: It's difficult to get groceries as there isn't anything close by. Apart from the kitchen, there are no social spaces to socialise with people from other flats. The kitchen is spacious but the refrigerators are quite small. The laundry machines can at times be a pain to operate (but these are managed by Circuit, not Broadgate).
I lived here for 2 years. Living in the Cloister House is the best choice for postgraduate students, as it is located close to UoN and is a quiet place. The rooms, stairs, corridors, and kitchen are spacious. With weekly cleaning, the house is kept very clean, and the support from the UPP staff is always prompt.
I loved living at Cloister, I made such great friends here and they made my time so special
Made some great friends here, but there is no social space to connect with people from other flats. There are not much opportunities to socialise or any activities conducted for us. The cleaning staff doesn’t clean the common area at times which leaves it untidy for 2 weeks. Overall, the location is amazing due to the connectivity and proximity to university but there are things that could be better.
Best place to stay if you want a quiet living experience, getting groceries could be a problem, social spaces are absent too.
The laundry machines (washer) has always been a problem!
Enjoying my year at Cloister House, great location and staff are very helpful.
