Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

Great memories here and friendships made.
Beautiful rooms, good food, great community, close to sports centre and central campus
Did my MA here so stopped in private accommodation but this section was compulsory so do not take my word for it.
Best social hall on campus by far and one of the nicest with big rooms
This hall is perfect. The rooms are large and quality is definitely well above average. The staff are always willing to help and give you a smile in the corridors which is always nice. Overall, living in this hall has made my first year experience great and memorable... the only downside to it is the lack of healthy meals offered but as I didn’t have to cook, can’t really complain!
This is a perfect hall. Rooms are of a good size and well above average and the bathroom is cleaned daily making the experience a whole lot easier. The staff at this hall are extremely friendly and always up for a chat. For me, this hall has made first year great and the friends I found here are immense! It is probably one of the further halls from lectures but next to the sports centre so I’m not complaining!!

Have to say I have so enjoyed my time at Nightingale hall. Have had the best time and will be taking away some great memories. Catered halls may not be for everyone but the social experience is great. Met some great people. There is always someone you can speak to whether its friends or even hall staff. The hall is spacious having some great common rooms, there's even 2 tennis courts round the back of hall and we are right next door to the sports centre! Cleaning staff and porters are great. Hall office very helpful. Food is ok - has its ups and downs, can't wait for the summer bbq. So glad I am in Nightingale hall. My advice for anyone is enjoy, time here goes very quickly.
Living at Nightingale Hall is what one could only describe as "the Hall living experience from hell". The food is mediocre, as are the cleaning services (if your room is due to be cleaned in the last week of term then they won't clean it, meaning you have to spend your last week living in a grimy mess). The worst part is probably the inefficiency of the hall team. The porters and hall office are fine but the hall warden and duty tutors are mostly spiteful people who lack even a shred of compassion towards the very students that they are supposed to be helping. Oh and the worst part: FIRE ALARMS. The hall has an old fire prevention system that means that fire alarms will go off randomly in the night - twice if you're unlucky (which most of us definitely were having ended up at Nightingale Hall). Don't expect to get much sleep in this hall, especially during exam season. Location is decent though. Close to Sports centre.
Without a doubt, the best accommodation available on campus. Had a great time living here; close proximity to the gym, cafes and Vesper bar. Great management, great porters (Shirley and John). Loved my stay here!
Simply the best hall at Notts uni! Stayed here for year 2 and 3 and absolutely loved it!!!
Good, but not enough interaction between corridors
Everyone really friendly, good facilities and you get to know everyone, all in all the best hall on campus
Nightingale: smallest hall, biggest rooms, among the prettiest on campus, staff are always friendly and we're very well looked after.
Amazing! Except for the food but you will get that in any catered hall.
