Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

The best. The Nelson Court family always has flat parties, and they are always the best! wouldnt change my accommodation for anything and wish i could stay here all 3 years!
Reasonable enough. Location excellent - closest halls to central campus. Management could be improved - endless people turning up to your flat to do things with no prior warning whatsoever, can be an inconvenience at times. Cleaning generally okay, although some days they will forget to empty your bin. No common room/social spaces. Social experience will depend on the type of person you are - tuesday and saturday nights are incredibly noisy until the early hours of the morning which can be annoying at times. Wi-fi could be improved.
Very old style, not good value for money.. No oven!!!! Kitchen vey very basic. Beds? More like a bike of bricks. But location is very good.
Nice spacious rooms, with en suite bathrooms which are cleaned once a week
Best rooms (ensuite), best location, best parties! Unfortunately the wifi is extremely slow and the kitchen only has one fridge for 10 students!
Wifi not great, social space poor
Best place to live and study, quite, but dynamic. Location is excellent. The room is like your personal castle. You can easily work hard and play hard in there.
Very modern and clean. Good facilities.
Amazing room with en-suite bathroom. Terrible kitchen
Sub-standard accommodation for 10 people.
We have no common room, but most halls don't anyway so were not too fussed. Communal kitchen area could be bigger, for ten people we don't have a lot of room. Cleaner is great, very kind and helpful. If some things broken, once reported it takes little time to be repaired. Takes two minutes to get to lecture theatres, 20 seconds to get to the union club and pub. Very expensive when you realise that I'm going to be paying almost half the price next year... Its a shame they keep increasing rent prices.
Value for money is okay but not great when you consider the newer halls get charged the same and they have nicer, newer kitchens with two grills, two microwaves (we only have 1) and an extra fridge between the same amount of people. Cleaning is good, kitchen twice a week, bathroom once, bins emptied daily. No common room but the kitchen is a great social space. Best thing by far is location - could not ask to be more central to campus, I can see the Square and the LCR from my kitchen window. SUCH a convenient place to live!
No common room, rooms are quite expensive but a lot better than the other accommodation on campus.
