Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.
Couldn't have had a better room or flatmates! Was like living in my own hotel
not bad at all. Costs more money than some residences but you get what you pay for. Also excellent view.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my time spent living in Colman House. Although it could be considered to be pretty expensive for what you receive I would definitely recommend it. It is very conveniently located being approximately a 5 minute walk away from the centre of campus and is surrounded by a number of other accommodation blocks (Nelson Court, Britten, Victory, Paston House etc.) which makes it perfect for socialising. The flats are cleaned regularly with the kitchen being cleaned twice a week and the en-suites once a week was sufficient. The only issue was that for a 12-person flat the kitchen was a bit small; we only had 2 microwave ovens, a grill, 4 hobs and about 8 chairs which was inconvenient if you wanted to all socialise in the kitchen together. Other than that the halls were pretty much perfect, I couldn't have asked for a better flat.
Terrible value for money as there's no ovens or social space, and as well as the wifi being terrible and dropping out nigh on constantly I have nothing in common with my obnoxiously loud flatmates so have spent the entire semester running on far less sleep than I would like. Small rooms and small bathrooms with terrible shower stalls; and considering others in accommodation for the same price get larger versions of these things it is a rip off! The only plus side is the location, despite it being the accommodation furthest away from the centre of campus (besides the village). However, I would rather pay £1,500-£2,000 less per year and have a 10-15 minute walk to and from university each day, and not have my student loan (and then some!) spent entirely on rent.
Great accommodation and big rooms compared to other accommodation
Bit of a pain to walk to and from in the cold - can be quite a walk depending on where I'm coming from/going to. I live in a 12 person flat and we do not have enough kitchen appliances for 12 people (flats of 6 have the same amount of appliances as we do). No common room whatsoever. Kitchen isn't the nicest (poor interior decorating!) or warmest place to be.
They don't ask you your interests before you come, like other unis do, so struggled to make friends within my flat
The bedrooms is fine- they're like any other university halls but them kitchens are a disgraceful excuse for social space. Felt like the school canteen.
Rip off, no oven or social space. They put me in the medic block which meant everyone was boring and basically had none of my friends there. Rooms were half the size of nelson court but still the same price. Kit me was for 8 people but only provided seating for 5. Was terrible
Clean and high quality halls, no social peace except kitchen
The halls are outdated, kitchens are not nice and no common rooms
widi drops out all the time and considering how expensive the rent is it's a shame we don't even get a oven. But the location is excellent and the room and kitchen size are nice.
Just a bit pricey for what it is... The trade off is that you just have to roll out of bed and you're practically anywhere on campus.
-Value for money is awful, old fashioned and very tacky. Hot water systems are awful and wifi terrible. -The halls are located very far away from where I need to be. It's located on the opposite side of the campus. -the halls are managed terribly, when the fire alarm went off it went off for 10 minutes then security turned up to turn it off. Senior resident never there when you need it. Also the flats only contain medics and health care students, very difficult to interact with other students studying other subjects. -the cleaner is absolutely amazing such a lively lady who does her job well. -what common room/ social space? Isn't any in halls - nothing really in common with housemates, we don't really get along and we all have different interests.
Good but no common room/social space - let down.
Beautiful views, all En suite, kitchen facilities are questionable at times (don't try to bake in the mircrowave "ovens") but one of the best years of my life!
Stayed in halls last year, loved it. Wish I was back there now so conveniently placed.
The price of the rooms were really expensive in comparison to other universities and the communal area was rubbish! It looked like a chefs kitchen with all of the metal sides and it didn't even have an oven! The seating was uncomfortable and it would have been nice to have at least a sofa in there and a tv would have been a nice bonus!
