All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation
What tenancy length do I need?
Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
Should I stay in catered student accommodation?
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
What is a guarantor and do I need one?
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
What bills will my rent include?
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
What is purpose-built student accommodation?
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Will my student accommodation be furnished?
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

Great place to stay. Staff are great such as Caitlin always willing to help. Would recommend.
My experience at Camden court wasn’t the best I could have hoped for. There were some small issues maintenance issues that never got resolved during my stay, the bathrooms are outdated, and there isn’t a common / social room for this accommodation but rather one that is shared over at another accommodation. Despite this, the staff here are lovely and have made my tenancy here a lot more enjoyable, they are always keen to help and readily available to help with anything you may need.
really good accommodation perfect location
crusty kitchen no social area good staff but the windows don’t open
In my opinion Camden Court is the best student accommodation for international students. With the facilities they give the students.
Very good accommodation but pretty expensive for what’s available
Great place, lacks social space but events are fun and encouraging.
I would say that for a studio, it is definitely value for my money. However, one thing to improve on this would be the efficiency of the maintenance. I am always facing some issues with flooding from the shower, and I just hope this can be looked at properly. As for the property management, I would say more improvement has to be done. I feel that most of the staffs are very friendly and helpful, but some can be rude and appear to be unfriendly. I think more social spaces should be implemented, especially for post grads students like myself. As for social experience, it would be further improved to include everyone. I feel that the current events seemed to only be catered to undergrads, which makes a post grad like myself feel a little left out.
Kitchen space is good, there are plenty of cupboards for each person, and shared utilities such as ironing board, iron, mop etc. Ensuite rooms have good space and storage, bathrooms are good quality and standard. It’s a nice place to live while at uni, office and maintenance staff are friendly, the only downfall is the lack of social/common areas.
The staff here are super helpful and friendly and the rooms are quite nice as well
Not particularly sure what I pay 150 something a week for apart from location there’s pretty much no facilities on site
Only downsides of this accommodation were that the rent was extremely high and the cleaning was unsatisfactory. Upon moving in, there had been dust on most surfaces, flies inside kitchen cupboards, as well as dirt on counter tops. It had taken a full 2 days to clean but once it was completed the room was a really nice space to live in. The location was perfect, only taking a few minutes to reach northumbria’s main campus. Staff were friendly and very helpful, especially the security team, specifically Jamie. He provided an outstanding service, went above and beyond to help with any issues :)
With the price of Camden, you would assume the facilities and overall experience to be the best. Don’t get me wrong the building has an ideal location being 5 mins away from the uni as well as shops and the city centre, however, the en-suites feel like caravan bathrooms, the heating system is useless and recent construction work is becoming a huge inconvenience for most people here. The lack of social spaces is surprising too, knowing other cheaper accommodations have access to small gyms, cinema rooms and activities such as a pool tables.
Not the best, many of us feel as though there are no social spaces to mix with other people and it’s very isolating. The bathrooms are not nice for the amount we pay and with the building work at the moment going in it is very disruptive to live around. Overall disappointed by this accommodation and wouldn’t recommend
Good experience, always clean, in a great location, friendly staff, always helpful.
Studio accommodations are comfortable and spacious, but the bathrooms could be updated to be more modern with better materials. I had an issue with my shower heating, however maintenance came out almost immediately and completely replaced the shower tap, and now I have very hot water. There is some sound proofing and conversations can be had without being heard in other rooms, however it is easy to hear people coming back loudly late at night. Studios have large windows, and the rooms at the back of the property have a nice view of the scenery and environment. Staff are very understanding and personable, it’s easy to get along with them which makes you feel cared for. Some updates could be made to the insulation of the rooms, as it gets quite cold during winter months. The location is great for both universities, and the town centre is only a short walk away so you can easily go get some essentials without too much planning ahead.
Camden is in a great location it is easy to access the city and the university campus. The rooms on the below ground floor are extremely dark with little natural sunlight. This is not know before moving in I believe these rooms should be cheaper .
Have a studio flat. Really friendly and helpful staff here, excellent location, good facilities however extortionate price for rent, paying almost £8k for the year, struggling to afford other things as my loan just about covers the rent.
Location is great as it’s really close to town however there isn’t a communal area to talk to flatmates
Good accommodation, good location, maintenance is reliable, could have been cleaner on arrival.
Very good accommodation, Maintenance request are always done quickly and efficiently however Camden lacks in social spaces
very good , maintenance requests are done extremely fast
maintenance is done on request and is reliable. Very friendly staff but could have been cleaner on arrival. But very good location especially for uni.
Camden court is closed the perfect location with it being close to uni and two shops, it’s like 10 mins from central newcastle and has a lovely staff team, especially Andrea, Maureen and Sam
Perfect location and the studio is nice! It was not cleaned enough when I moved in, but it's the perfect space for me after I cleaned it. A little loud, you can hear pretty much everything from the hallway
It’s been good however the pictures on the website do not match the rooms properly
Camden court is a really well-run accommodation with multiple very helpful staff, especially Mr Maintenance Man
Excellent accommodation, great location for town and university. Helpful and friendly staff available 24/7.
I really like the reception team over here, as they are always very friendly and helpful. Keep up the great job guys!
Good, I like it a lot ! Good location
Good staff, friendly environment and extremely convenient location
The security team are very friendly and helpful, and have assisted us in resolving issues with other flats quickly and properly. The entire staff at Camden are always lovely and chatty, and there are often treats in reception for us to enjoy.
Great place to stay. Very close to the city centre and lots of helpful staff
Nice building with nice bedrooms. Really nice kitchen
I stay in flat 406 at Camden I have enjoyed my stay so far and have had positive interactions with all of the staff as well as any of my issues being promptly solved with minimal fuss
Great place for first years. Would recommend to others who decide to come to northumbria university
Great location and lovely rooms
Great location, good social experience and close to shops on northumberland street.
I have made loads of new friends here and have loved it and felt safe throughout my stat
very pleased with services at camden court. i feel safe and we’re always helped out by the staff .
I like camden, it is lovely and the staff are nice and welcoming. They leave us food like cupcakes at the door!
i love it here, in the heart of newcastle so can easily go out and also go to uni the staff are very friendly!
Very good experience, good rooms and nice staff. Just wish there was more social space!
maintenance guy carlos is a life saver problems get sorted asap
Fantastic location, only 5 minutes away from campus which make morning easy and stress free. Wonderful staff. There are problems here and there but maintenance tend to be right on it. I’ve brought a car up which meant I had to pay for parking which is very very expensive on top on rent but I suppose it’s that high to deter students from bringing a car up as there’s not many spaces. The kitchen in my flat is good as it has an island but I’m aware not every flat had this - this a good social aspect for having friends round etc. Overall a decent place to live. Madelaine price
Hi Madeline, Thank you very much for your lovely review :) Glad you are enjoying you stay at Camden Court, it is very handy that the campus is only 5 minutes walk away! Camden is one of the properties so close to Campus with a car park which is great. In the last two years we have had a refurbishment so the kitchens are nice and modern as your review mentions.
amazing facilities and an amazing accommodation, great location (5 min walk from uni)
Thank you for the great review Emily! So glad your enjoying living with us :) The location is ideal for them early morning lectures!
amazing accommodation to live in, kitchens extremely modern and clean and spacious and couldnt be in a better location
Thankyou for the review! Camden Court was refurbished two years ago and the flats & studios look amazing and modern! Location is always key & only 5 minutes walk to Campus!
The location is amazing, I can go to the business school within 1 minute. I also can go to Northumberland St easily. I would have loved if there was a social space where I can just relax with my flatmates if needed. Ayub Benlahcene, Camden Court
We appreciate your time for reviewing us! The location is amazing, opposite main campus & the business school. 8 minutes to the City centre main shopping street, which very handy when first arriving for buying new items for your room! As there is no social space we are teaming up with Byron central for events etc. which is a 2 min walk from Camden.
Very welcoming, clean and comfortable, would recommend although maybe better options when price is considered
Thanks for the great review! Our team are such a lovely bunch and always welcoming :) The price reflects the location as its opposite campus with only a 5 min walk to the main campus and a 2 min walk to the business school.
Rooms and kitchens are spacious and modern which makes student living easier as you have a nice study space and kitchen is perfect space to cook and socialise. Building is in best location to roll out of bed for lectures and get to town in minutes.
Thank you Emily for the lovely review! The rooms are veyr generous in size and have a big wardrobe, we had the kitchens refurbed 2 years ago so they are nice and modern. The location is great more or less being on campus!
big bedrooms and lovely kitchens, nice atmosphere and friendly staff. so close to campus as well. (faye graham, camden court)
Thank you Faye! We appreciate your review :) Our bedrooms are lovely and spacious with great storeage. The Camden team are very friendly & love chatting with you all at reception.
Really like living in Camden. Staff make a real effort with students living there and made it look fab for christmas. Also have tea and coffee in reception to help yourselves. Only issue is the washing machines can sometimes be a bit dodgy.
Thank you for your review :) Tea and coffee are a must for your 5 minute walk to campus! The team love making the reception look festive & we also so for other holidays. We have just had a laundry upgrade in December so these issues are now rectified!
Reception are super friendly and always are on hand to help out when needed
Thank you very much for the review, the team love to help & are always happy to have a chat 😊
Camden is a great place to live not only for how close it is to the university itself but also because of the amount of space you get within your flat, both in the kitchen and the bedrooms. I'd recommend Camden to any first years looking for somewhere to live in Newcastle.
Lovely staff on reception very friendly and helpful! The location is amazing and the flats have lots of space.
Great staff in reception and on maintenance. The facilities are abit dated - laundry ect. And we lack a common room in our building so events are hard to create / partake as we always require uses of another Accomodations room. They could clamp down harder on noise and cleanliness - overnight security has been taken away this year and cleaning inspections are only once a month with no incentives of what it means to pass/fail
It’s always nice to see Nicole and Maureen on reception especially as they’re so helpful and friendly :) hardly any problems with my stay here so far and the location is so close to campus. Very convenient for new students!
Lovely place to stay and reception staff are so helpful - especially Nicole !!!
Location was amazing (1min walk to campus). The kitchen was very modern and spacious with loads of storage and equipment. Room was ok. It has everything that you'll need it to have - bed was comfortable and 3/4 so it was spacious, bathroom was good the only problem I had with it was a little leak, but property management was quick to respond, the heater was not that great really it struggled to keep the small room warm (it was also broken when I moved in), the desk was super large which was awesome, there is no warderobe so clothes go in the desk drawers which can be annoying at times, the window was quite small so not much light was getting in the room. My room was facing the uni, but there is a big and busy motorway between the uni and the building so if the window is open is always very loud (quiet when closed). Flats/kitchens do not get cleaned by staff. Most people in the building generally don't care about uni so expect a lot of noise from around 7pm to 3-4am.
Halls was close to the main campus, however none near Coach Lane Campus so was difficult to commute, especially with unpredictable bus times.
Location is mint, close to town. WiFi is good, just dead expensive and can get better offers
Clean and diverse environment where all people interacted all. The staff was very helpful in making life easier for international student like myself.
The bathrooms flood every single time you have a shower, one of the only accomodations with a single bed, awful social experience (nothing ever happens). The location is great but thats about it. If you stayed here youd genuinly be stupid, Winn Studios and Liberty Quay are miles better and around the same price. Dont waste your time or money.
Location is more than ideal, you're literally 30 seconds away from campus (not exaggerating, it's one 50m bridge away). The rooms are pretty standard, not tiny not huge, but for the same amount of money (sometimes less) and not much further away you can get a double bed, laminate floors and even sometimes a washing machine in your flat (which will save lots throughout the year). The washing machine and dryers are pretty steep, about £3.50 and £1.70 respectively. The management team are very helpful, quick to respond. But lock out, and stuff like that...can take a while, and get things like which flat you're in wrong, leading to and even longer wait. If you go, look out for Nicola, she's always happy to help and makes a huge effort to!
Very outdated halls , interior is old and not aesthetically pleasing. The shower floods the bathroom floor and there is no extractor fan which makes maintaining a clean bathroom very difficult and causes damp/mould to form . Would recommend somewhere such as liberty quay for better value for money . Halls are also quite unsociable and there is no social space or common room.
If you want vomit at the bottom of the stairs, constant fire alarms, and flatmates who don't care about university, then Camden Court is the right place for you! Come stay at this overpriced, poorly managed accommodation, but don't bother bringing any bedding because you won't be able to sleep anyway. Enjoy having wifi? Sorry sunshine, none of that here, as the internet speed is about as fast as a dead snail. Love animals? Well, even though you can't bring your own pets, you'll enjoy seeing the rats scampering around outside the entrance. But please, come stay with us and give us £120+ per week for a room with a bathroom that floods every time you have a shower, and cry when you realise you've spent your student loan on this place, when you could have shared a house for half the price.
Brilliant location; Doctors,Town and City Campus are all within a 10 minute walk. Staff are really friendly and always happy to help. Rooms are decent and not particularly spacious if you're looking for a large room.
Modern halls with great value for money. En suite is a great plus. I've found that it's a very unsocial halls of residence compared to the likes of glenamara or winn studios. But it just depends who's living in the flats by you as other floors seem to be more social.
No common room, 5 minutes away from the town centre. Staff are nice enough. Nit the best value for money
