Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.
Excellent location, very close to shops such as lidl, Tesco and Sainsbury’s express. The city centre is a 10-15 minute walk and so is George square (the main uni campus). If you go to Kings campus you can get the free shuttle bus from George square! The gym is literally next door to the accommodation. Cowgate is a 3-5 minute walk (where clubs/ pubs are). • Our flat had 3 bathrooms (2 with showers) and 3 fridge-freezers between 5 of us with plenty of cupboard space, so good facilities. However, there was no toaster. The kitchen and bathrooms are cleaned once every fortnight. • The rooms are spacious with a 3/4 bed which is relatively comfortable and they’re larger than other accommodations I’ve been too. • Not a very social accommodation since there is no common room and there is not much socialising between flats.
Mediocre accommodation in an excellent location.
Great for sporting athletes just lacks a communal space between flats
(Reviewing on behalf of a flatmate) Fairly Standard accommodation with excellent facilities and location. felt close to everything and no more than a 10-minute walk to Lidl, uni, meadows, 2 minutes to the gym and a brisk 15 minutes to Waverly. Close to the pool also. Close enough to Cowgate for access but no noise and sick on the streets in the morning as is the case with accommodations actually situated on Cowgate. Really enjoyed my 8 months here and would recommend, it's perfect if it gets a common room tbh.

All the basics done well + large rooms and excellent location. Shame there's no common room but close to city centre so no shortage of social space outwith the building
Was here last year and it was a bit substandard. I moved in to find three of my five flatmates were semester abroad students, two of which had poor social skills and spent most of their time in their rooms or at the gym/library. This was a big blow, but I was rather glad to see the back of them at christmas. Those who replaced them were lovely but again semester abroad and all americans. This seemed to be the way with darroch - they stick all the sem abroad people here and theyre mostly americans.
Darroch Court is pretty good on the whole, location is excellent - right next to the gym and about a 5-10 min walk to the shops and 10 mins from campus. Rooms are spacious and generally well lit, and the small double bed is pretty comfy. Each flat is cleaned at least twice a fortnight, although sometimes it's more. Socially it's very good - loads of parties, however there isn't a common room which is a bit of a downer.
Great location but poor facilities in terms of bathroom quality and social spaces.
Great halls, no common room though
1. Central location (2 min walk to Pleasance gym, 5 walk to Cowgate, 10 min walk to Nicholson street, 10-15 min walk to George Square) 2. Nice rooms, 2 showers, 3 toilets, good kitchen facilities, cleaning common area twice a week 3. Five person flat, social mainly with 1-2 other flats, but common room being built. Residence assistants organised first night pizza social and BBQ social, good way to meet other Darroch people 4. Fast and effective repairs (within the week, and sometimes same day) 5. Helpful Residence Assistance (office hours every weekday, helped set up academic timetable, answered questions) 6. Good for studying, no significant disturbing noise 7. Design not as modern as other flats (e.g. Beaverbank/Deaconess) Considered Sciennes as well but happy living at Darroch. Improvement suggestion: more Darroch socials involving food/drink such as pizza night/BBQ. However, RAs do a good job and my impression is that Darroch has at least as many socials as other halls.
Excellent 1st year accommodation... Just amazing Cleaning twice a week! Large rooms and kitchen diner Heating very warm and on all the time so not completely
