Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

One thing worth noting with the older halls is that the rooms vary drastically. So wifi might be decent in one room and practically non-existent in others. I'm giving 4 stars, as it was fast and because most of my room had good access.
Best views, best location, best food (until Sallies stole our chef). There is no contest. McIntosh is the best.
Great way to spend first year. Socially, location-wise, and aesthetically fabulous
I was completely spoiled being in McIntosh! Easily the best hall in St. Andrews.
We have an unparalleled location. We have the best food. We have our own private gardens. We are the best.
Everything great (except laundry). Very lucky to be here!
Best possible location, Wardens are great, cleaning staff very nice, dining hall has WAY too many arbitrary rules and really need to stop acting like I personally insulted them when I take more than two pieces of fruit or stack mugs. Food isn't bad, just repetitive (potatoes for EVERY. SINGLE. MEAL.), the staff can be nice unless you forget to get dessert and go up to get it before the bell for seconds and then they burn you alive. Seriously, they need to chill out. Are they trying to malnourish us?
The best hall with a wonderful community, so happy to be placed here!
Lovely hall and great community spirit. Pleasure to live here.
McIntosh is the best hall in St Andrews! The location is fantastic as it is right in the middle of the town and around the corner from the union! The hall is small-enough that we have a great community spirit which is aided by the fabulous hall committee who set up events in the hall. The food is great and there is a wide variety of dishes. The hall is cleaned everyday except for weekends so is extremely clean! The facilities are great and the whole hall has recently been done up and so is fresh and modern inside with all the original quirks and features still there - adding to the charm of the building. I have had a fantastic time here!
seems good, like the hall, great food.
1st year halls was like joining a big family.
I had a lovely time ! Practically all of my friendship group is from McIntosh
McIntosh is an amazing hall - it's not just a home, it's family. The unbeatable location is just around the corner from pubs and the beach, as well as an equal walk to both science and arts buildings. The strong ties and community spirit make it obvious why it won Hall Champion. Small and mighty, and I can't imagine living anywhere else!
Huge room, sea view, delicious meals - perfect!
McIntosh is an amazing hall. All the staff will listen and will take the time to get to know each student. The cleaner in charge of my floor was awesome, always there with a story to tell and genuinely interested in how your life at uni is going. Everyone if so approachable and making friends with other students is immediate. The wardens help with any issue and have awesome movie preferences (when you get there you'll see). They also come, sit and eat with you at meals; they make your McIntosh experience not just one of a hall, but one of a family. All the staff listen to your requests - take the noticeboard in the dining hall as an example you can ask the kitchen staff for anything and they always give you a response. There are so many social activities going on in McIntosh each week and so much hall spirit and with its central location you can get to anywhere in St Andrews in 10 minutes and the student union in 2. McIntosh is the best hall, I recommend it to everyone!
If there's any hall you want to be in, it's this one. Can't recommend it enough. Great community.
Absolutely the best hall in St Andrews. Central location, lovely staff, fantastic atmosphere, and a great sense of community among the residents. Couldn't recommend it enough!
McIntosh hall is the best hall at St Andrews. The staff is wonderful and the environment is perfect for socializing and learning. My year in McIntosh was perfect. McIntosh has the most hall spirit and best community at St Andrews. I was so lucky to have lived at St Andrews and will cherish those memories for the rest of my life.
Having lived in DRA last year, Mcintosh showed me how a student hall of residence is meant to be! The hall spirit is immense and making friends in Mcintosh is a guarantee as everyonequickly identifies with their status as minotaurs.(If you were in Mcintosh you'd understand...) The food was great, varied and the kitchen listened to suggestions given by the students all through the year. The wardens are helpful, easily accessible and friendly as they sit with you at lunch/dinner and get to know each student on a personal level. All the cleaners do an awesome job of keeping rooms and communal areas clean and tidy. They get to know your routine quickly too, I.e. Whether to disturb you in mornings or not. Mcintosh couldn't be more central to the town in terms of location. A 2 minute walk away from the student union, 5 minutes from west sands and nothing more than 10 minutes to your lectures, whatever subjects you are taking. You have to stay here! 10/10 would stay here again.
The best all-rounded hall experience I have ever witnessed. It truly is like one big family - and not just the residents. From the wardennial team, to the cleaning crew and everyone involved in this hall, you will never find anything like it anywhere else.
McIntosh is awesome. The staff are all wonderful and feel like family. It's in an amazingly good location and you can't beat it's culture. I originally wanted to be in sallies but got placed in McIntosh and I'm so glad I did! I would not have had half as good a time anywhere else. McIntosh rules! (I only rated it low on value for money cause everywhere in st Andrews in ridiculously expensive!).
McIntosh and everyone in it, including students and staff, are the best! It definitely contributed to me having such an amazing student experience!
Mcintosh was a great hall to be in, central location, beautiful building and great people!
McIntosh Hall is like a big family and I'm jealous of anyone who gets to call it their home in the future.
good, decent, this has to be 20 characters
