It’s actually unbearable living in Alcuin. There a two builds know as old quad and new quad and both are equally horrible despite one being “modern”. Firstly the bathrooms. Do not expect to have a pleasant shower here because what you have is a glorified wet room. In new quad you at least have more space but expect your room to become flooded because that’s what will happen, it might even spill into your room too if you’re lucky! Also the silverfish! Because of all the damp you’re gonna have to become best mates with them. Not only will they scurry around on the floor, find their way into your sink and scale the walls, they make their way into the rooms, kitchen, drawers! You cannot escape them. Old quad is worse for them because there are huge gaps under the doors. The bedroom and bathroom ones. “Fire doors” but with how big the gaps are it won’t be impossible for them to spread underneath. There’s just something about alcuin that will leave you depressed.

Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

Not bad but extremely expensive for what you get, but that’s the same throughout York... Decent enough but had a few problems with silverfish (accidentally brought a few back with me when I moved out too...) - but I reported the problem through their online system and the next day someone came round to spray the room. They were always very quick to solve problem like gone out lights and blocked plug holes. Alcuin staff were amazing too - so helpful and made sure everyone felt at home!!! Close to campus too so very convenient!
Amazing when you’re sharing with nice people but can be a horrible experience when there are horrible flatmates, but that’s little to do with the university, just something that has to be put up with.
Such a disappointment. Our rooms are big but extremely run down (I am in an older block), and the whole place just feels like a retirement home. I was only fortunate that my housemates are friendly! I have not spoken to anyone from any other houses or flats in Alcuin. Go for Derwent! It's not really any worse, it's far cheaper, and you're much more likely to enjoy your first year!
Nice size rooms that look nice, good location close to classes. Only have 1 common room (JCR) which is tiny and dingy with nothing good to do inside. Lots of silverfish in my room (30 in a month). To say we're paying £6k a year for a shoebox room and tiny ensuite you'd expect it to be free of silverfish.
I love Alcuin. The CSA organise a great diversity of events.
Amazing college. Nothing beats being a 2 min walk from class and in nice halls and with great people.
Slightly secluded but thats the draw, alcuin is like living in suburbia behind the library. means you can escape to your own little world with rabbits and cats and the occasional duck.
Good accommodation. Most boring college ever! Avoid if you enjoy having a social life.
Great college especially for sport
Alcuin sport is great for meeting new people.
