All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation
What tenancy length do I need?
Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
Should I stay in catered student accommodation?
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
What is a guarantor and do I need one?
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
What bills will my rent include?
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
What is purpose-built student accommodation?
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Will my student accommodation be furnished?
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

I stayed with then for two years now and honestly best experience so far amongst all the accomodations i tried in Portsmouth, the staff is lovely and very helpful whenever i needed anything, the room is lovely.

Thank you very much, it's so lovely to hear from our rebookers that they enjoy it here & that you get on so well with the site team.
Scaffolding around for half the year making the noise unbearable and not a safe space to study or relax. Some compensation given but still expensive for the experience. However includes PureGym subscription and staff is very welcome and always happy to help!

Thank you for your feedback. We're so sorry that the building works have impacted your stay - however we're thrilled that you get on with the site team & utilise the free gym membership.
It overall was an amazing experience l will definitely recommend it to others

Thank you so much for your lovely feedback!
Stanhope is really lovely place to stay the common room are great, being able to have a dishwasher and washing machine included is really good value aswell as the free pure gym membership. The team at reception are also super friendly and helpful. The location is perfect for getting to university too.

- The location is good, close to the station, large supermarket etc. - All ensuites are south-facing, only a handful of studios are south-facing (most E/W) - Front desk is only 9-5.30, so you can't get things delivered outside of those hours. Pickup options are nearby though. - Sound insulation between rooms is decent. I don't often hear my neighbours, only when one screams in frustration, probably playing league. - The wifi is good but iirc only 4 devices can be added without circumventing it. - The construction is the biggest negative. Scaffolding covers nearly all floors (they said they started removal but stopped after only a few floors). The compensation is nice and I get it is not the property's fault, but it is still a major con. If you keep your blinds open the construction workers often peer in, it's very annoying. Also not nice constantly getting woken up at 8am by someone drilling the side of the wall from the outside. - 1/2 elevators is often broken, so long times to wait.

Thank you for the detailed feedback on your review. The scaffolding is continuing to be taken down, since the start of this week they've removed another couple of floors. We do try to keep the lifts in working order, however sometimes this is due to misuse, or if parts are required it can take a little longer to repair. Usually all 3 lifts are in working order, as they are currently. We hope you enjoy it here and find the ammenities are good even though the building works are inconvenient.
good AFhhhhhhhhhjjiljjjjjjujiiii

Thank you for the review - hopefully this is a genuine one and not a cat running across the keyboard!
Good accomodation compared to the others but they need to work on work ethic + building construction is so long

Thank you for your feedback. I'm not sure what work ethic you're referring to as this is unclear? I can assure you that the site team are very dedicated to their roles and put in as much effort as possible. There's always lots going on behind the scenes. The construction work unfortunately is necessary, but we've been as clear as possible about what's going on and when we have completion dates we will communicate them to you. This is also why residents are receiving compensation payments, as we appreciate that it's not an ideal situation.
Been a great all around experience, no prolonging problems with anything while living at Stanhope house.

Thank you for your feedback. We're so pleased that you're enjoying your stay with us.
Scaffolding is a huge problem. The scaffolding has been up since roughly November 2023 and works are still ongoing despite receiving an email that it is starting to be taken down September 2024, though no scaffolding has been taken down at all. Construction and workers are incredibly loud, this starts from 8am until 6pm weekdays. Constantly having to keep blinds shut as construction workers can see directly into windows which is extremely uncomfortable and is an invasion of privacy. Although we do receive compensation for this, I am paying over £9,000 to be living here which is totally unjustifiable given the circumstances. However, accommodation manager is absolutely lovely. She is so friendly and always up for a chat. Social events are regular and very enjoyable. Accommodation as a whole is well kept and clean but basement is often disgusting with bin bags overflowing dustbins. Despite this, I couldn’t be closer to the university buildings, shops and gym. Very convenient location.

Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. The scaffolding has been partly removed - the contractors began taking it down a few months ago. We're hoping the remainder should be coming down within the next couple of months, but once we have a definite date we will let you know. Please do let us know if you're having issues with any of the construction staff as we can escalate this and prevent it re-occuring. We do want to make sure you feel as comfortable and at home as possible in your room. We're really pleased that you get on with Lynsey and that you enjoy the events put on throughout the year, and will ensure we ask the cleaning staff to pay more attention to the bin store going forward.
In my opinion, the facilities of the flat everything is very good, there is a caring front desk a variety of activities, free gym can let me work out and keep fit, independent washing machine, more hygiene and cleanliness, everything is very good, just hope that the loading and unloading outside the building will be finished soon, can be removed, so that I can see through the window to see a better

Thank you very much for your feedback! We really appreciate it. How lovely that you're enjoying the free gym membership and the front desk staff. The scaffolding will be down soon!
I did like the size of the rooms but in the winter the rooms get extremely cold the heating on stays on for 15 minutes before it automatically turns off and the windows leak a lot of cold air from the outside. Construction is happening so it very noisy but the goodwill gesture has made up for it. Other than freezing the washing machine has been broken and reported five times but it still wells up with water and the dryer doesn’t work with it. But the staff are nice and helpful.

Thank you for your feedback. Please let us know in Reception if you're cold and we can boost your heating for you. We can also look at your windows and the washing machine if you log them onto the student hub as maintenance. We're pleased you like the site team!
As a university student, this accommodation is located in the centre of Portsmouth, giving me a better living experience being a 2-minute walk from the station and a 5 minute walk away from the university campus. The rooms are well-equipped, as well as offer inclusive bills and washing machines free to use. There is 24/7 support and free WiFi that is good enough to play games without any problems.

Thank you for your feedback. We're so pleased you like it here!
The location of this apartment is excellent, situated right in the city center, making it incredibly convenient for attending classes, shopping, dining, and more. The management is outstanding, and the staff are exceptionally friendly. This year, as there are many Chinese residents, some announcements are even provided in bilingual formats, which is really considerate. If there’s any issue, such as when my kitchen hob broke down, I just had to make one call, and the staff came to fix it promptly without much waiting time. The internet speed is impressive, reaching up to 300Mbps when using a wired connection. The only downside is that the building’s exterior is currently under renovation, which slightly affects the view from higher floors. However, the compensation provided for this inconvenience is very generous. It’s a pity that I’ll only be staying in Portsmouth for one year. If I were to continue my studies for another year, I would definitely choose to stay here again.

Thank you so much for your review. We appreciate that the building works are inconvenient, which is why we're offering the compensation payments termly to co-incide with your rent payments. The team are so pleased you're happy with the customer service and that you enjoy the events. We're sorry you won't be able to stay with us next year!
Noisy because of construction, other than perfect

Thank you so much for your review. We appreciate that the building works are inconvenient, which is why we're offering the compensation payments termly to co-incide with your rent payments. We're pleased that everything else is up to your satisfaction!
Very nice place and is in good location in the city. However it does feel a little too expensive for what is it, and they break up the payments very unevenly. There is also scaffolding all over the building so the views aren't great.

Thank you so much for your review. We appreciate that the building works are inconvenient, which is why we're offering the compensation payments termly to co-incide with your rent payments. We'll take the feedback on board about the uneven payment schedule.
Stanhope House is definitely worth the money! The maintenance is excellent, and the staff are super helpful and friendly, which makes the experience even better. There are plenty of spaces to socialise, like the diners and the cinema rooms, which are perfect for hanging out. Staying here is very comfortable and easy going especially as a final year student l :)

Thank you so much for your review. We're so pleased that you're happy here and enjoying your time with us.
The staff are so lovely and overall it is a good place to live as its close to all the shops and lecture halls.

Thank you so much for your review. We appreciate the lovely feedback.
Living in Stanhope House is so nice, the management is wonderful and the social spaces are so nice and welcoming for us students. The rooms are very comfortable and homely.

Thank you so much for your review. We appreciate the kind words regarding our management team and we're pleased you're enjoying your stay.
The customer service at reception are really lovely and super friendly, they are very helpful and understanding. Stanhope is the best for location it’s close to Gunwharf, university, other accommodations, train station, town & supermarket. They have lovely rooms that can be rented such as cinema room, library and games room etc. I love how reception hosts social events with free food and nice entertainment. WiFi can be very poor and disconnects, majority of the time I end up using my 5G as WiFi is slow and not working. Location is convenient, great facilities e.g. washing machine in room. However, if I’m being honest the rent for my studio is around £11.5k which is extortionate considering there’s constantly loud building work noises starting around 8am, building workers watching you through your window (lack a lot of privacy) and foul scents from the works which you can smell from your room it’s really disturbing. The value for the Accomodation doesn’t seem worth it personally :(

Thank you so much for your review. We appreciate that the building works are inconvenient, which is why we're offering the compensation payments termly to co-incide with your rent payments. The team are so pleased you're happy with the customer service and that you enjoy the events.
Staff are so so so lovely you couldn't ask for better everyone loves them. My only possible complaint is that the elevators are quite dirty on the walls and floor but not to any extreme extent just basic stains, there is hardly much wrong other than that. Oh and unlike every other accommodation, there are no silverfish which is a very big bonus. We also got a FREE GYM MEMBERSHIP with the PureGym when we moved in which is incredible and lots of different common rooms we can book out, although it would be nice to be able to just walk in without booking them for the sake of social interactions.

What a lovely review, thank you so much! We appreciate the feedback about the lifts & will take that into consideration. Please keep an eye out for the next event in the building, this will be great for getting social with other residents.
The receptionist is really really good and nice, particularly patient with explaining questions ;) the construction maybe a little bit noisy

Thank you so much for your kind feedback, our Assistant Accommodation Manager will be pleased to know she's doing a good job!
the rooms that you can rent out to hang out with your friends really make up of the for the money spend as well as for the size of the swower as compared to the accomadations its not tiny or a wet room

Thank you for your feedback, we're glad you're enjoying the common rooms!
Great experience at Stanhope this year, nice and tidy, quick responses and smooth service. Great customer service, receptionists very welcoming and friendly. Great people and would definitely recommend.

We're so pleased you enjoyed your stay with us. Thank you for your feedback.
The window of the room is small, quite stuffy during summer, the air is not flowing much especially if the drying machine is drying the clothes.

I'm sorry you found it stuffy - but thank you for the feedback.
Saffron is always around to help or have a chat. As are the Lynsey and Amanda. All the staff are a great help with any issue and can have a laugh with you about anything

We're thrilled that you got on with the staff - we're here to support and happy to chat any time.
Despite the building works happening outside the building being disruptive, the overall experience at Stanhope House has been great. The office staff, Linsey, Amanda and Saffron have been very helpful with every request we’ve had as well as being really nice to just have a chat with. Most other occupants have also been very nice to be around.

Thank you for your review. We do try to minimise the disruption and the compensation is offered for the inconvenience.
Amazing reception staff, property manager is amazing, WiFi is a bit iffy but the property is great

Thank you for your feedback - Lynsey will be thrilled! The Wi-Fi is being updated at the end of this year.
The reception staff and property manager are amazing

Thank you for the lovely feedback.
I’ve lived at Stanhope house since September and have had a lovely time here. The living spaces are well furnished and modern. The common rooms are a blast to book out with friends. And the staff are extremely helpful and friendly are always eager to chat and interact with tenants. I’ll be living here next year too

We're so pleased you rebooked with us & that you have made use of the common rooms.
Words fall short to describe the LIST of issues I faced with the building, property staff and management &more. It is terrible accommodation. They did not care about the excessive time building delay us students faced and made all of us fulfill payments for the TEMPORARY ACCOMMODATION they placed us in deceitfully for longer then the alleged 'two week' period. -Did not protect my tenancy deposit for the period of 8 months until I questioned them about it when realised. - No security managing the building - No CCTV and other promised facilities The management was incompetent and heartless. They didn't respond to any of my emails when I was seeking help and answers, They have no consideration to confidentiality and Code of Standards. Appalling overall, could continue to write a whole book on their BS! FEEL FREE TO LIVE THERE. WISH there was an option of NO STARS!
Great place to lice in. Numerous common rooms. Comfortable stay
It is really bad accommodation. They don't really care about any of them that lives in their accommodation. No support given. Lived in a temporary accommodation before moving in and still paid the full weekly amount for that temporary accommodation even though we didn't want to be there. The management is really bad. They didn't respond any of our emails when we were seeking help.
