Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.
Satisifed, overral the quality is decent but not worth the money
MSV south is a really good location! You’re close to a lot of food spots and to the university.
Helped me to solve the problem of my upstairs used to kept playing music in the middle of night.
It has good facilities and washing is easily accessible how ever it is expensive at £3.20 to wash and £2.00 to dry.
the wifi is terrible it never works, the drawers in the freezer is broken and has been since i moved in, theres a gap in the floor boards, burn mark on the chair … but my room is big and lots of storage space so i wont complain..
The location is pretty ideal, being within walking distance of both campuses but also having transport links close by to the rest of the city. The bronze rooms are standard in size. The kitchen is adequate. The communal areas and events are rather uneventful but that is entirely dependant on who is living there at the time.
Kitchen isn’t the biggest but that’s what we paid for so can’t complain. Bedroom is generous and couldn’t be happier with it.
Good accommodation for the money and lovely people to be around, happy with my choice. They paired me up with amazing roommates, we all get along and help each other out.
MSV South is a okay accommodation, I enjoy having an en-suite and the rooms are fairly sized however there is lack of security and no lifts making it extremely hard when moving in and out of flats it is unacceptable.
Room is nice and once all decorated up it’s really pretty. Bed is comfy, water pressure is nice and lovely flatmates. Only thing is my window is facing curry mile so it can get loud on weekends sometimes but nothing ear plugs can’t fix
Great location near mmu right behind the library and main campus. Bus to the city centre is right outside and lots of restaurants close too
Amazing location, and the medium bronze non-ensuite rooms are a normal size for a student halls room. The kitchen is pretty small, but that's to be expected, but just a heads up. The location is the best part about it, as it's in between both University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan campuses and the city centre. Everything is only a short walk away, plus obviously you have all public transport right next to you. Unfortunately a downside is that it uses Glide WiFi, which has a reputation for being unreliable and tends to have long downtimes. If you need stable WiFi for something important, it's best to go to the library or a University building.
Second year living here, and it’s always been a good area to stay in. Friendly staff, walking distance to university and the rooms are just right.
So far I am really enjoying my time at MSV South and find that it’s a nice area to live.
Friendly Accomodation with lots of social opportunities
Best decision to stay here , couldn’t have find a better place than this.
The location is amazing for food & for the commute to uni. close to so many shops for groceries and lovely staff. the rooms are so nice
I’ve been at this accommodation for the span of my university academic years. It has been a delight seeing how MSV South has changed so substantially for the better. It’s so pleasant seeing staff who are so willing to help and make you feel welcome. Maintenance issues are dealt with, from my experience so promptly. As someone who does a lot of online shopping, my experience of parcel collection has been wonderful, I can’t think of any faults. The cleanliness and homely feeling has seen the most improvement in my opinion and I can say wholeheartedly I would recommend this accommodation to anyone considering it.
It is good enough for the money. Kitchens should get cleaned by management otherwise it gets dirty quick and no one seems to care.
Very nice location, staff are helpful and friendly, rooms and shared kitchen area is clean and good wifi (at least in my room). There are some events throughout the year but they are not too exciting. A few disadvantages are that the smart TV in our kitchen has bad connection and it can be hard to sleep sometimes because of the noises from the main road.
The location is great, very convenient and the rooms are comfortable.
Great accommodation , but pricey
Great place to live. Very close to University of Manchester.
Great place to live at would definetely recommend
Staying at msv south for my 2nd year and it has been very good with friendly staff and nice social spaces
Overall, the rooms aren’t bad. They do look quite nice and the bathrooms are spacious in comparison to other accommodations across Manchester. However there is no communal room for the students living there to interact. It makes the “living out” experience quite boring and lonely. To improve, there should be a communal area for students to chill and talk also with the prices they’re asking for, the Wi-Fi should be a lot quicker and we should feel a little more safer living there.
The location is amazing it’s close to uni and all the necessary shops. Reception staff are very friendly! Other services within the accommodation have not been great. The heating breaks every 2-3 weeks and although it gets fixed quickly when reported, it’s been a constant issue. It’s frustrating during the winter as we need to wait until Monday for it to be fixed. There are also no lifts and we have to climb 8 sets of stairs every day. There was also an instance where mice were all over the accommodation- there was literally one in my ROOM (this happened on a friday) and we were told to wait until monday for pest control. This was completely ridiculous. Overall, I paid the same last year in a different accommodation and I never had these problems. Here, the heating has been temperamental, we’ve had instances where no water comes out the taps, power cuts and obviously the whole mouse situation. It’s alright because of the location but I am not coming back next year.
Mice and cockroaches spotted, nothing has been done about this by the accommodation team at all. Situated in an unsafe and loud location within the city; lots of shouting and drunk people at night as well as several drug dealers hang out in the carpark. There have been incidences of violence such as with knives in the near vicinity, mainly in the carpark. Not worth the money at all. There is no social area and kitchens are very small considering they are supposed to facilitate 7 people.
Please do not stay here, for your sake and for the sake of future students. Asides from their general response to RODENTS (mice have been found in bedrooms/kitchens too many times!) and maintenance issues being appalling (and the quality of the rooms are also below standard), they also fail to acknowledge the situation of the pandemic, refusing any refund or money back despite most residents not currently being able to stay in the accommodation. Dwell has failed to share the burden of the pandemic with its residents and have decided to maintain its profits, whilst the rest of the world (health staff, businesses, employees, students) struggles. If someone is considering moving into student accommodation for the first time, please remember: You will spend most of your time there, having to eat, sleep, wash etc - prioritise places that make you feel comfortable and relaxed (this is not it!) and not just somewhere close to the university (you can always get a bus).
When my daughter moved in the room was already filthy. Waste coming up through the shower, mould in the bathroom broken window latches, evidence of rodent activity! Don’t let your child stay here it is truly disgusting!
The worst. Mice everywhere. Scary and loud location. Everyone complains about their roommates being unclean/loud/rude/unsociable. WiFi is slow. I never feel safe here. Don’t come here. Whoever rated this place 5 obviously works for the company and is trying to take your money.
Great halls to be in, all flats became very close was good for socialising and good facilities in flat and kept clean by cleaners
