All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation
What tenancy length do I need?
Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
Should I stay in catered student accommodation?
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
What is a guarantor and do I need one?
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
What bills will my rent include?
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
What is purpose-built student accommodation?
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Will my student accommodation be furnished?
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

Jack is a bossman, make him in charge and give him a fat pay raise
I am in my 3rd year and this is the worse accommodation I've been in. I am unhappy with how issues with fellow flatmate with hygiene, shared areas were unclean and guy living for months who was disturbing the pace late at night. I have gone home because of the flatmate and her boyfriend arguing late at night. Living with flies and was told to clean someone else mess. Jade was the only one who took the situation seriously and resolve the issue by removing flatmate. Unfortunately it's the last 2 months of uni for her to move. This was not the only issue I have requested multiple repairs and some not fully fixed such as hot water in the kitchen and shower. At the 1st semester there was builders who was working on accommodation until Christmas. This was very distracting I missed lectures and struggle to focus on assignments which as a 3rd is a lot of stress. We wasn't aware the builders will remove the ceiling for dust in the air and lights hanging down from the ceiling which wasn't safe.
My experience involved a very troubled flatmate who kept me up at night, made me fearful to leave my room and made me apply to mitigating circumstances to my exams. It was unclean and an unsafe environment for my flatmates and I. These problems lasted from October until March, only resolved now. I believe the core person who helped me most during this process was Jade. Jade was extremely professional and helpful, she took us seriously and made us feel heard and valued. She dealt with the troubled flatmate and the unwanted visitor who was living there extremely well. She phoned me for updates regularly and made me feel very safe. Jade also called the police in which me felt like things were much more seriously taken. As soon as she worked for Unite Students things were much more fast paced and taken more seriously. Prior to the Christmas holidays, my flatmates and I didn’t feel heard enough or taken seriously. Tahir was friendly, Isabell was professional.
Everything was really good but the whole experience was bad due to a bad flat mate who made the living place really dirty and uncomfortable to live in. Had to endure this from October to February. Issue resolved in March to a good standard however lasted a long while. Tahir had friendly service, Isobel was very professional. Jade was very helpful and she took a lot of action towards this troubled flat mate.
I had a great feeling as soon as I entered the hall Mr jack potter was so friendly and helped me out with my check in process and made sure that I’m comfortable here
