Newarke Street Biography
Newarke Street couldn’t be in a better location for De Montfort University students, as it is situated right next to the campus. It is also convenient for those studying at the University of Leicester which is just a twenty-minute walk away.
Newarke Street is a smaller residence so it is ideal for those who want the benefits of a bigger student block, but enjoy a bit more peace and quiet. Students at Newarke Street benefit from the use of communal spaces and the gym at Upperton Road, which is just over the road. There are also handy laundry facilities and secure bike storage on-site.
There is a range of rooms to choose from including self-contained studios which come with a comfy bed, en-suite, and kitchenette, perfect for those who enjoy their privacy. Alternatively, you can opt for an en-suite room in a cluster flat of between two to six people, which you can share with friends by making a group booking. These rooms are fully furnished and have a communal kitchen and living space which residents share.
Visit Student Roost’s website for more details or to book your room.

All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation
What tenancy length do I need?
Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
Should I stay in catered student accommodation?
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
What is a guarantor and do I need one?
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
What bills will my rent include?
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
What is purpose-built student accommodation?
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Will my student accommodation be furnished?
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

Reasonable value for money, beds are not very comfortable mattresses are very thin and springy and carpet is very ugly and seems very old and dusty even after hoovering
Really great staff and very attentive? I remember busting the washing machine and they came to help straight away …even mopped up my mess I was in shock definitely rebooking
I have been living here since 2 years and now already rebooked for the next year. Being a PhD student you need quieter environment and hassle free living experience and you will have a good time at Newarke street. Closer to city centre and not too far from UoL, is a perfect location to stay. The best thing about this place is it has washing machine in every apartment, which is great and all bills included is I think a cheapest accommodation you can find in such a great location with several amenities (There are others but not as cheap as this and no washing machine). The staff is very helpful. I never had to wait more than a day to get maintenance, your parcels are collected efficiently and are safe. They have great security and nice place to take a walk downstairs. I think best living experience, value for money.
The overall facilities are great. The accommodation is local to most of the places that DMU students are likely to go to, especially campus but also local bars and shopping centres. The staff are amazing, really kind and accommodating 24/7 no matter what the concern is. Any problems are dealt with as soon as possible, and communication is always there. The accommodation feels really safe, with the extra gates and doors making you feel out the way a bit more. This also is nice because it means it’s not too loud, even with being close to city centre and the hospital.
I am really enjoying my stay on Newarke St. Any time there is an issue, I flag it with the team and it gets resolved very quickly. They are very friendly and quick to help. The room is spacious and was reasonably cleaned.
Jack and Cordy are absolutely amazing. They made my friends and I very welcomed and made my third year of uni stress free by making sure all maintenance work was done as quick as possible.
All good except social experiences but they’re currently working on that
Great Place to Live. Excellent Location being pretty much a 15 min walking distance from anything you will need. Staff are great staff are very helpful and any issues get resolved promptly.
Excellent accommodation and you get to miss home in cormfort!!

The Newarke Street apartment is in a good location, super close to the university. There is a washing machine in the room, which can save on laundry costs. Moreover, the maintenance management is good; there is a quick response to reported issues. Another thing that I am impressed with is the 24-hour open reception, which allows me to contact them 24/7.

The flat is nice! I’m living with friends so my social experience may be different from others, tho there are social events on and advertised to keep someone busy and the staff are really lovely. I imagine if it was my first year I would be happy to go and bug them for help if need be. Jack came to check up on us and was lovely as always and the maintenance, while iffy sometimes, is usually sorted pretty quick. My only complaints would be the lack of appliances for the price, but we do get a washing machine in the kitchen, an en suite and a more limited number of flatmates so I understand the higher price. Overall a good place!

AVOID!!!!!!!!!!!! Very bad student accommodation please avoid at all costs do not make the same mistake as me. Extremely overpriced for the quality you will get. Broken furniture, dirty stained carpets and marks all over the desks and shelves. Very unkept student accommodation, I am disgusted. I would post picture but the site does not let me. My toilet seat was broken upon arrival. 3 weeks in and they still have not fixed it. I don't know if they are understaffed or just negligent but their service is appalling. I booked early on in the year but they decided to give me a room in their extension block that I have to climb 10 flights of exposed stairs outside of the building to reach. Staircase is absolutely vile with mold and bird poo everywhere. You would not believe you are living in a city centre. I have complained for 2 weeks but they are very unresponsive and unprofessional, replying only once a day. You cannot contact the managers directly and cannot confront them in person
Thank you for your review. I would like to apologise for the wait time on your maintenance issues being resolved, something like a broken toilet seat is considered a lower priority than someone without hot water or a working heater, so more minor maintenance can sometimes be pushed back by more emergency jobs. The time at which you book your room does not determine which room you are allocated to in the building, but there is a space on our online booking form to add any preferences for where you would like to be allocated. We do have an escalation process for residents to contact the management team, but we attempt to resolve any complaints at the site level before this escalation occurs. We aim to respond to emails as they come in, but unfortunately this is not always possible with some jobs taking us out of the office. Although the site is manned 27/7, 365. We also always carry the site mobile with us, so that we are reachable in an emergency.
Fake nice staff. Gave me a room with a broken window, lead to me suffering from Mental health issues due to the 6 months of barely any sleep being able to hear all the traffic and students all day and night. And not to mention my room got cold as this was during winter. I had no choice but to move out well before last rent was due and they are still trying to charge me full price despite seeing medical proof. I don’t need to mention names otherwise I’d run out of space, but absolutely no one in this company cares about your mental health. Save yourself time, money, and everyday and AVOID this place at all costs. These people are dreadful and evil.
Great studio room, only downfall was being on ground floor right next to the smoking area where people would go out in the early hours of the morning during a party and shout and smoke!! Other than the noise in the early hours it was a nice place to stay right in the centre and less than a 5 min walk into uni.
Thank you so much for your glowing review. We pride ourselves on being on DMU's doorstep as well as being close to the city centre.
All the staff are great - unfortunately they can't control which room mates you have and they can be a pain sometimes but the accommodation gets my full recommendation for its facilities and the way its managed
Thank you so much for your glowing and understanding review.
Possibly the worst accommodation ever, they will give you a flat that looks nothing like the picture they show you, there is also a lot of Issues with the appliances in the flat and they take so long to fix them, staff will walk into your flat/ room without knocking. WiFi is disgusting, over priced for the quality you get. looks good in pictures online but that’s it. DO NOT BOOK THIS ACOM or you will be really disappointed.
Thank you for your feedback. We understand that some of our rooms are not exactly the same shape as the photos online. Unfortunetly, as our site is comprised of multiple different buildings, all built at different times, we cannot advertise every room individually as no two are entirely identical. We do aim to resolve maintenance faults as quickly as possible, and I apologise for any excess time you had to wait for your issue to be resolved. We do have a proceedure to knock and announce ourselves three times before entering a room, so the team will be reminded of this to ensure all members are compliant. The WiFi is run through Ask4, so any problems with the service should be directed towards them, as we are unable to control it. I would also like to clarify that we do not charge seporatly for any utility bills, they are all included in the weekly price advertised on our website.
I wanted to make sure I lived here for awhile before I left a review. I could honestly say that this is a really nice accommodation. The staff are wonderful people and they are always so helpful. I haven't had any negative experiences here. The only downsides here I suppose are the lack of entertainment rooms and the lack of lifts in the building that I lived in (and maybe the lack of spaces for parking). But overall, it's a very nice accommodation. I plan on staying here for the next year and hopefully the year after.
Thank you for your glowing review. Although we don't have entertainment rooms or long term parking on site, we do have these at some of our other properties, which any Student Roost Resident has access to. Our Upperton Road site is where most of our social events and areas are so please feel free to drop by!
The studio is really clean and spacious, maintenance are quick to solve issues, very friendly reception, very happy!

It's so great to hear that you are enjoying your experience living at Newarke Street! Thank you for taking the time to write us a review.
I suffer from a few medical issues, and the staff have been so helpful. Especially the night staff - one of them (Alps i think his name was) even helped me move my things from one building to another when I had issues with flatmates. The thing i really like which sets Student Roost apart from other accommodations is that they have a really personable human approach. We can talk to them any time.
Thank you for your postive feedback we are so glad you are enjoying your stay with us, thank you for taking the time to write us a review.
Very helpful staff on site, especially the night staff. Its my first year here, so can't really complain as I've not lived away from home. What people say about there being no social space on site - we do have access to a 24 hour gym, kitchen for cooking with friends, a games room with air hockey, pool table and foosball table as well a cinema room and study space all available 24/7. I would deffinetly recommend Newarke Street as its so close to DMU and town.
It's so great to hear that you are enjoying your experience living at Newarke Street and making use of the social spaces at Upperton Road especially the 24-hour gym. Thank you for you taking the time to write us a review.
Great accommodation, close to the city centre. Their have been a few maintence issues, but thats a given in a place so big. If you are looking for value for money - Newarke is definetly worth it.
Thank you for your lovely feedback. We have been going through a change of caretaking staff any future queries regarding maintenance please report them to reception.
The site location is phenomenal. It is only 3 minutes walk to my morning lectures! Improvements could be maybe a social space on site would be great! Whilst I know we can go upperton road for the facilities, somewhere nearer to my home would be a great feature. The staff are very helpful and always happy to assist you with any queries I may have
It's so great to hear that you are enjoying your experience living at Newarke Street! We appreciate your comments about common areas, and this is something that we are looking into currently. Thank you for taking the time to write us a review.
Although the expense of living here is quite pricey, I do appreciate that there is a washer/dryer situated in the kitchen and the location of the building is extremely satisfactory. However, on occasion there has been issues with staff letting themselves into, not only my flat, but my own bedroom without notice or previous warning, numerous times has this also been while I was asleep or had just gotten out of the shower. I understand some reasons as to why this can happen, but I would appreciate the respect of my own privacy which I thought I would've received anyway. It is also a shame that to access the social spaces; we must go to another entirely different location, and while I still haven't seen them myself I'm sure they're good.
Thank you for providing this feedback, rest assured we will speak to all staff regarding room access. We appreciate your comments about social spaces, and this is something that we are looking into currently.
One of the employees in Student Roost Newarke Street called Abdi has picked on me many times. At first he fined me for smoking in the room which i accepted then he started fining many more times for no reason and blamed me for things that my room mate would do. I also have video footage of Abdi saying there was smoking in my room and there was no proof of anything no smell no ash nothing and he said the toilet was a mess when i have video proof it wasnt. As soon as i took the camera out he said dont record and left. He has picked on me and my flatmate many times. Even for smoking cigerate outside and he sayings its cannabis. Also saying the kitchen a mess for a few bits of last night food. Constantly picking on us. Everyone else is very nice and respectful.
Thank you for providing this feedback, management are aware of issues that have been reported and we can assure you that all complaints are fully investigated.
Staff are always easy to talk to and willing to help with any queries. Rooms are spacious and the site is always kept tidy.
It's great to hear that you are enjoying your experience living at Newarke Street! Thank you for taking the time to write us a review.
The accommodation is always clean and quiet. But there is no social atmosphere. I only know my flat mates no one else in the building. It would be better if there was a communal space where tenants can interact. The WiFi connection is poor and I end up using my mobile data
It's so great to hear that you are enjoying your experience living at Newarke Street! We appreciate your comments about common areas, and this is something that we are looking into currently. In regards to WIFI if you speak to reception staff we can assist you in contacting our third party internet provider Glide to get this issue resolved for you. Thank you for your lovely comments and taking the time to write us a review.
I think issues are dealt well by staff members here at halls. I just wish it was a little cheaper
Thank you for your feedback, we aim to keep our prices as low as possible while remaining comparable to other student accommodation.
Overall very peaceful place to live. Run very professionally. Friendly staff. Just needs a common room in the premises for socialisation and needs better signal in rooms. Sometimes WiFi goes down aswel.

It’s a bit isolating as there aren’t any common areas in the blocks and the kitchens could really use a kitchen table to eat at. But the staff are amazingly friendly and helpful especially Abdi and always have a chat with you in the courtyard and makes sure you’re okay which is very different from other accommodations. Any faults and problems are fixed relatively quickly and when we were without hot water in our flat for a couple of days we were provided keys to a spare flat to use those showers etc which was the room next door which was amazing. The rooms are also very modern and clean. And the best bathrooms of any other student places I’ve seen.
It's so great to hear that you are enjoying your experience living at Newarke Street! We appreciate your comments about common areas, and this is something that we are looking into currently. Thank you for taking the time to write us a review.
Staff are very friendly and helpful, i like that we get free use of Upperton Road common room and gym.

Anna was amazing and so helpful! The flat was modern and spacious but the common room was too far to enjoy- it would’ve been better to have it on-site. Also being in the extension building meant no lift so on moving day and transporting heavy good was very challenging. I unfortunately was on crutches for a proportion of my stay and the stairs made it very difficult to get out of the flat. However I would recommend sulets and Newarke street to anyone! Thank you Anna!
