All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation

What tenancy length do I need?

Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.

Should I stay in catered student accommodation?

This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.

What is a guarantor and do I need one?

A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.

Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?

Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.

What bills will my rent include?

If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.

What is purpose-built student accommodation?

Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.

Will my student accommodation be furnished?

Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

Towers are not the best place for people who actually care about their edicationa and are not in uni just for partying. North Towers are defintly not worth it, when you can choose South Towers for almost the same price and get much better quality of living.

I'm gonna preface by saying that if you are anything less than a complete extrovert who wants to be around people 24/7 and doesn't care about noise then living in the towers may potentially be literal hell for you. Prison cell rooms, absolute lack of sleep due to the paper-thin walls, door slamming and partying in the kitchen. This literally forced me to sleep with construction-grade earplugs every single night for the whole year. Keep in mind that your flat/room is random and if you're unlucky like me you might get placed in flats 1-4 which enjoy the "surround sound experience" hearing every single drunk shouting in the kitchen and slamming the doors at 3-6AM waking you each and every time. Also, the paper-thin walls drive you insane if you have a noisy neighbor. The other cons, which, in my opinion, are not as severe because they don't impact the quality of your life as much are very messy kitchen, unclean showers and the constant smell of w*** which pervades your room.

Such a great experience, defo recommend for first years, its so social and gives you a great opportunity to meet 13-15 other people immediately so there's bound to be some one you get on with. Great value for money as well as its costs under £90 per week! Only issue is freezer space as there's 2 drawers less than the number of people in the flat.

The best place to bond with people, the farthest building is 3 mins away, close to everything, spacious rooms and bathrooms.

Even the postgraduate flats in the North Towers are very noisy and messy. You have to live with people who don't flush the toilet or collect their hair after shower and throw banana skins, and chicken bones on the floor. Kitchen tables are always dirty. It is a mystery how come people do not get sick there. Walls are very thin, basically all noises travel. Apart from this, people slam doors when coming in and out. Kitchen appliances are very old and when something is broken it takes ages for them to fix. We had so many days with bathroom lights, the hob etc. not working. Also the contract is fixed for a year. So you cannot terminate it. You have to pay the whole year's rent, even if you leave. Room exchange is almost impossible as there are not many people willing for it. Also they charge you an administrative fee if you want to exchange your room with another student. The management is slow, not responsive and their main focus is to keep the costs low and get the rent payments.

If you like stolen food, no sleep, uninhabitable spaces, useless management, and a constant smell of drugs and unwashed stuff, this is perfect. Not for those who plan to study

Towers are the cheapest on-campus accommodation, yet they're still pleasant to live in, location is fantastic, barely notice the walk to class. Only complaint is that while the ethernet (wired) connection is great, achieving the 70mbps upload/download I pay for, the WiFi (wireless) is adequate to poor, struggling to load 360p videos on YouTube at times, regardless of time of day so I doubt it's network congestion, I expect this is more to do with cheap access points.

If you are looking for a luxurious place to live, this is not the place for you. If however you want to live in the social hub of The University of Essex and do not really care to much about luxuries such as double beds or en-suite bathrooms then Towers is great fun. you get the bare minimum and showers/toilets are communal, however you get used to it pretty quickly. Lectures are only 5 minutes away maximum. Only downside really is lack of communal space, there are no living areas simply the kitchen. Also if you hate noise, DO NOT MOVE HERE. You will not enjoy it, however if you can look past the noise and the bare bones nature of the accommodation, then I have no doubt in saying that living in Towers (South Towers especially) is the most fun you can have at Essex Also, be prepared to come to blows with accommodation.

I like the fact that whenever you want someone to talk with, you can find one in your kitchen! People in towers are so friendly and sociable that you can be friends with them from the very first day!

South towers - freezing all year round, but great for meeting people. £75 a week seemed way too much though especially when it took them 6 months to fix my broken heater in the middle of winter...

If you go to the University of Essex, GO IN THE TOWERS! Yes, it's not the cleanest of places since you'll be sharing with over 10 people, but it is the most social place. For your first year of uni, there is always a floor having a party for you to join, it really is the best way to meet people. You're never lonely and there is always someone for you to hang out with or get help from!

You dont experience essex if you dont stay in the towers! There are always social's going on is any one of the 6 towers. The people in the flat instantly become your family. You do get what you pay for- it is the cheapest accomodation so everything is basic but there is still everything you need there. The friends and experience you have there beats an en-suite any day of the week!
