All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation
What tenancy length do I need?
Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
Should I stay in catered student accommodation?
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
What is a guarantor and do I need one?
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
What bills will my rent include?
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
What is purpose-built student accommodation?
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Will my student accommodation be furnished?
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

DO NOT STAY not worth it! The elevators are consistently broken and garbage is left in hallways for days. Front desk staff is by far the worst thing about this place. My shower was broken for 3 weeks, I went down 4 times, the first 3 people who "helped" wrote down room # on a piece of paper and no one came to fix, the fourth finally entered it into their computer system and told me that was the only way it could get fixed (first three either did not care or didn't know how their own building works... either way yikes). Furthermore their guest policy is ridiculous. I understand having to check in upon arrival, HOWEVER having to deal with waiting in line to recheck in EVERY TIME they enter is a pain in the ass and takes forever. When an underage guest stays you must complete paper work. I did this and they lost the papers three times... no apologies, were simply rude and did not understand why it was frustrating having to fill it out not once, not twice, but three times.
Great location, great value for money and great amenities.
I haven't apply for the school accommodation. However, I found the agency outside the university. At that time, there's only one option for students accommodations. But now, I found that in the CUCL pages, they provided another methods to students like Host family or other private housing support! It really improved for students having other choices.
The elevators are constantly out of order, the social spaces are in poor condition if they are open at all, and the security staff has been racist on more than one occasion
We're very sorry to hear about the issues you've encountered with our elevators and are working hard to rectify them. We take allegations of racism extremely seriously and would like to investigate this further - please could you email us with more details at hello@chapter-living.com.
Chapter Spitalfields location is the best feature. I have encountered many friends and the social spaces made the experience very comfortable
Thank you for taking the time to review us - it's great to hear that you're enjoying your time with us.
Overall, an average accommodation in my opinion the drawbacks far outweigh the benefits. Firstly the TV lounges are falsely advertised on all floors as throughout the stay it is only used as a storage room, my rooms personally the furniture isn't properly maintained and not in a very good condition. For the price that you pay you'd expect the staff to at least assist with a few services like printing university work which was not provided. A few of the facilities aren't fully functioning such as the screening room (limited seating etc) & games room no proper equipment is even usable. However, there are a few plus factors like the study rooms.
Thank you for your review and we're very sorry to hear that you have experienced some issues at Chapter. In regards to facilities, unfortunately, we have had to close some of the amenity spaces in accordance to government guidelines and to keep our building COVID-19 secure. We do hope that we can have all amenity spaces open again very soon and continue to follow government guidelines closely. We would be very happy to assist and resolve any maintenance issues in your room, please could I ask you to email us at feedback@chapter-living.com and we can discuss this further?
