Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.
Over all Langwith is nice, it's better than some other colleges at York but at the same time you are paying alot of money for something very similar. The benefits are that you get a TV and living area but that doesn't make up for the very basic amenities and lack of community.
Accommodation was bad cleaners stole my items so many times!! Management wouldn’t do anything about it and where only worried about rent being paid on time!

Pros: -the best on campus accommodation. rooms are modern (spacious if you go for shared bathroom!) in great quality and look pretty -the best college on east! if you're into nightlife langwith does great events like marmite and lovely college spirit -the college team work so hard and are amazing at what they do- they put on arts/music events weekly and really care about the college (will talk to anyone) -the distance to west campus really didn't matter in terms of going to lectures as free buses run every 10 mins and east is such a pretty campus -greggs <3 Cons -sometimes you can feel a bit detached from west campus as pretty much all of the society stuff is there, as well as other colleges like derwent/james (eg friends over there), it has more events/is bigger in general (if you're close with your flat it probably wont matter but it did a bit for me lol) -pricey accommodation!! but its definitely worth it- most york accommodation is super expensive but langwith is worth it imo
Covid-19: cancelled rent for third term
The only reason it went down in the first place is because of the strikes, it has nothing to do with the quality of the university or it’s facilities.
Langwith has got to be one of the best accommodations in York university however, there are some problems. They write on the York website that the shared bathroom gets cleaned everyday when in fact it only gets cleaned once a week. The other problem with the bathroom is that there is no window, so it can smell and leave odours around. I really like the room space and the study desk. There are plenty of plug sockets near the desk and the bed is comfy. The kitchen is very good with enough Soave for storage and space. You get what you get paid for except the cleaning.
If you are a postgraduate avoid these halls at all costs! From day one we were made to feel unwelcome, when we arrived there was no one to help us with the location of our rooms or even tell us which block we lived in. There wasn't even anyone on reception to give us our key never mind explain where things were on campus. This was shocking as we arrived within the move in times specified by the university! Things only got worse from here, unfortunately we had a lot of issues with other students in our flat (not cleaning, arguments etc). It became so bad that we reported it to the college who initially seemed helpful our assigned tutor arranged a kitchen meeting... which he then didn't show up to. Any emails sent to the college about the deteriorating relations in the flat were not even acknowledged with an email back confirming receipt. When issues were dealt with we were not informed of the outcome which left us feeling as if we were openly being ignored.
The best college on campus. Amazing modern rooms with all of the amenities you could want.
Very nice new halls with a great community feel
Social experience & college spirit is everything, and Langwith is number 1 when it comes to that.
Langwith is by far the best college, the rooms are lovely especially the en-suite bathrooms! There is a great college spirit and everyone is so friendly.
The 'Gryffindor' of the York Collages. Can not be excelled in collage spirit in any way/shape/form. Quite simply put, i am 'Langwith, till i die'.
Langwith has been so welcoming to freshers! It's such an excellent college with an amazing supportive sense of college spirit! Everyone here knows they're langwith till they die!
Langwith is one of the most welcoming places I've ever been in. Being an international student, I was worried about moving and meeting new people, but everyone in my college is extremely helpful and it did not take long before I started feeling like home.
The sense of community you get in Langwith is unparalleled. There's always a chance to #getinvolved and something going on for langwithians to enjoy. The accommodation itself is beautiful, everything is within reach and this improves the quality of life immensely.
Langwith College is extremely welcoming and friendly, and I'm so glad I'm here. The rooms are modern, with excellent 3/4 beds and brilliant showers! The kitchens are big enough for all of us, but could probably get cleaned a bit more. Apart from that, it's excellent!
Langwith is a great community to be part of. The enthusiasm here is second to none. Langwith till I die!
Quite expensive compared to what I've known before even if we have free Wifi, cleaning services and a brand new common room. The porters are really nice and are doing a great job. The Glasshouse is a good place to chill and prices are very affordable. If location is a problem for you, think about it before choosing your college.
Brand new buildings with decent sized rooms and we'll furnished.
Langwith is friendly with amazing services and accommodation. So glad I came here!
Langwith accommodation is amazing, very spacious, warm and well looked after! It has the best community spirit and the glasshouse is a brilliant hub with friendly porters and staff! I'm so glad I got Langwith, it is definitely the best college!
LANGWITH TILL I DIE!! I've never been somewhere that makes you feel part of a community so incredibly quickly. Everyone is so friendly, willing to help one another and the atmosphere is second to none. The accommodation itself is incredible, really good quality and definitely great value for money. Wouldn't want to be anywhere else!
Langwith, I believe, is the best college because before you even get to uni, you can't escape the community feel that Langwith oozes. From the first day here you'll be immersed in the college and be chanting 'Langwith till I die' and meaning every word. There's always something going on in Langwith, something to always get involved in. All of the staff are lovely and their doors are always open if you have a problem. There is so much support in this college and it really takes care of its students. Langwith is also home to the only licensed social space on Hes East: The Glasshouse, it's cosy and welcoming and home to free food Thursday's - a big plus in any students eyes. Finally, the accommodation is super super nice. The beds are so so comfy and the rooms are big with plenty of storage. Langwith is a college that can be called home as soon as you set foot on the grounds. I really am Langwith till I die.
Really good at almost everything. So proud to be part of Langwith and I would definitely encourage other people to apply to Langwith. #LTID
I love this place more than I'll love my first born #LTID
Moved in to Langwith 3 weeks ago and I already feel like I'm at home, the college system makes you feel a part of the community and I've never met so many friendly people! Accommodation is fab and the showers are better than mine at home :) Would definitely definitely recommend to anyone
Though I only live 45 minutes away from the University, staying at Langwith makes me not want to go home as often as I should! The atmosphere is great, I really feel like a University Student here, and that's what I came here for, I'd recommend Langwith to anyone thinking of coming to York
It's a brilliant place to live and far better than any of my other friend's accommodation that I have seen.
Langwith was a good place to live. Being a stones throw away from the student union bar was great! Also being near the bus stop helped loads too. Fantastic rooms with ensuites.
I love Langwith College - it has the most amazing spirit and I’ve throughly enjoyed living here and being a member of it’s fantastic college life!
Began to feel like home during Freshers week. By far, made settling into Uni and easy and enjoyable experience.
All very new and flashy! Good facilities, thick walls (godsend!) and 24/hr porters (you will inevitably get locked out of your halls at 3Am one day). Central student bar with lots of events organised by the college, all free/very cheap. Located on East campus, close to Law/Management/Theatre/Film/computer science. Good bus service/short walk to other campus, but the location is something to consider.
Best college in my honest opinion
Living in Langwith made my time at university! The community spirit is amazing and you feel like a massive family. I felt really welcome and supported from the minute I arrived. The student association are always putting on amazing events so there is always something to get involved with!
Best college on campus, great bar and fab value for money
I was so incredibly nervous about coming to University but honestly, Langwith was the best college I could have chosen and I’m so grateful to have lived here. There is such a strong sense of community spirt, the college always has more supporters at sporting events than any others. Incredibly friendly and approachable college tutors whom have helped me out in my time of need. Thank you Langwith for such a fantastic year!
From the minute I arrived on the the pretty Heslington East campus, Langwith felt like my home. It has everything you need in walking distance or just hop on the bus to town. The people in the college are like my family (made friends for life in the first few weeks) and living here made settling into my first year at uni a lot easier. I'll always be Langwith 'til I die!
This year in Langwith has been so nice! Langwith is a top accommodation, with the bus 4 and 44 going to the city centre and Heslington West in a few minutes! You will live among ducks, rabbits, lakes... You almost feel like you live in a small world out of the campus! If you hesitate, do not hesitate any longer, and jut go for it! You won't regret it :)
Had so much fun here in my first year. The atmosphere within the college is unbelievable, with most people getting stuck into college life. Never a shortage of things to do with loads of stuff going on during the day and in the evenings. Worth noting that the other colleges don't get close to the amount of support at sports fixtures with the 'black and yellow army' being ever-present this year.
I lived in Philip Brockbank and I absolutely loved the experience there! Room sizes are suitable and having 3/4 bed and closed shower makes it even better!! The place being in the middle of Heslington East also makes it suitable for both 4 and 44 bus stops! Loved it! and hopefully I will be back on the 3rd year!
From day one, you're made to feel welcome. Everything becomes an occasion in this college - whether it's a free food BBQ or a 3rds football match - the college is out in force armed with food and speakers. There's events happening on a weekly basis from nights out to 'take me out' so you're never at a loss for things to do or people to see.
I can't decide whether it was good value for money... The prices are huge. Social wise it is alright, but there is a sense that if you are not part of the committee then you are an outsider. As for cleaning though it is top notch. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed living here. But for the student experience I could have probably got a better one in cheaper accommodation elsewhere.
Langwith is a home from home. The minute I arrived here I felt at home. I've made by best friends here, found out so much about myself and each other through the events in the College, the atmosphere and more. I guarantee you'll be shouting 'I'm Langwith 'til I die' from the back of the bus before the end of Freshers' Week! Langwith love, #LTID!
The college is lovely but is a bit too far out
I loved my time in langwith, the experience was amazing and the halls were incredible
I love Langwith! Traditions and spirit of an old college with the lovely new accommodation. Good value for money. 3/4 size beds!
The best college at the University with a great community spirit.
One of the best years of my life spent at Langwith College! Full of amazing people with amazing events throughout the year. It is so beautiful on Heslington East too!
So much fun! Everyone is so nice, the atmosphere is great, the accommodation is the best on campus and the events are amazing. LTID!
Langwith has the best community spirit of any college at York(: From day 1 you feel a part of the family and that continues throughout your time at the best college on campus. Accommodation is so lovely and the fields around are great for running. there's a free shuttle bus to the other campus so you're never too out of the way and the glasshouse is a decent place to chill. the only problem is the lack of a central common room but there's one over at goodricke that can be used or just someone's kitchen. would recommend to anyone looking for the best accommodation on campus(:
Best College at York! Awesome accommodation, if not on the slightly expensive side.
