Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.
While this place initially seems okay, it has several issues. The management is not helpful or accessible and can be dismissive of your worries. There is only 3 washing machines and 3 dryers for the entire accommodation which houses more than 400 students; this is also at the front of the building which is a far walk for those living in the flats at the back of the accommodation. Transport links from here are not reliable - if you're not prepared to wall 45min on a morning when the bus hasn't turned up for 30min then consider somewhere else. The WiFi is also never reliable- and coverage is very varied. The heating never works and during the winter months it's on restricted timing- management have helpfully suggested wearing hat coat and gloves inside your flat with electrical heaters banned. All in all, not value for money.
While my studio is spacious, well-lit with large windows, and has lovely garden views, dealing with management has been difficult. Upon my arrival, they have a policy of withholding room keys until payments reflect in their account, which wasn’t explained before I arrived and they didn't accept any solution such as keeping an amount of money as a retainer till the amount reflected in their account. The hall manager is difficult, making it hard to resolve issues. I've been waiting three weeks for a wardrobe with no clear answer till now. The studio was photographed in the ad with amenities like a microwave, which was not provided. Mails and deliveries are sent to the main building, and we were informed of this later, with no option to receive them directly. The laundry room is also in the main building, which is quite a walk, especially in bad weather, and more expensive than in other halls. Lastly, the heating in the main social hall is always turned off, so no one goes there.
Management should be helpful but not strict! Bad experience for me personally.
