Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.
No one is ever on site to help manage issues. So many issues were present before I even moved in. Should be cheaper for what you get

Amazing facilities great place to make new friend s
Got to be the worst location ever, right in the middle of bars, very loud and nothing can be done about this, my friend lived here, the rent was cheap but the surrounding bars are very loud and you can hardly sleep and the management do nothing about this
An excellent accommodation option for all students in Newcastle. Close to the city centre but also not on the doorstep of the hustle and bustle which is a perfect. The halls are consistently well maintained and any issues with the room are quickly fixed. Great social facilities and a gym all for a very reasonable price.
I have only lived at Burgess for a matter of months but I cannot recommend it enough. I am a second year journalism student at Northumbria University, and needed to distance myself from the rowdiness of university-owned halls. The cheapest studio is £125, which is considerably cheaper than the average cost in other private halls. The flat itself is spacious enough for one person, depending on where in the building your flat is. Most of the flats are longer than they are wide and are quite compact, but this makes them more cosy, I find. It's very modern, and easy to clean. The halls are incredibly quiet and peaceful, making them a much better place to work. They host all kinds of mixers, and have a private page and group chat for residents. The staff are exceptionally helpful, and very friendly. It is roughly a 20-25 minute walk from Northumbria/Newcastle University, but has proved to be great for my wallet and fitness. You are never far from a supermarket, and they suit every budget!
