All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation
What tenancy length do I need?
Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
Should I stay in catered student accommodation?
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
What is a guarantor and do I need one?
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
What bills will my rent include?
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
What is purpose-built student accommodation?
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Will my student accommodation be furnished?
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

Settled in really well, amazing accommodation to live in as very close to uni and also the city centre
Excellent service really like it her and feel really happy in the accommodation and safe
Would recommend it for the en-suite and good kitchen storage but overpriced
Was great. Felt like an LA penthouse
My experience of Archway Halls has been great in all aspects including how it is run and the quality of the rooms.
Enjoyed living there and had no issue with the accommodation itself or staff there, just with flatmates
I loved staying at this accommodation, I met amazing friends and was treated very well by staff.

nice area and nice people, near everything
Loved archway, nice modern building that felt very safe
So good and very sociable. The facilities are also very good and the location is perfect as it is a 2 minute walk to university.
Nice staff, feels safe, free food and events
Archway is very expensive, it is a nice accommodation and the rooms, kitchens, views (especially from higher floors) and location, but it isn't worth £170 a week, £185 next academic year. One reason is because there is mess in the lifts frequently that is clean but can be left there for days, and another reason is the washing facilities are limited (about 6 washing machines and 6 dryers respectively) so often they are all full (there are about 270 rooms). Also for £170 a week you would expect a bit more storage in the rooms, yes there is a wardrobe, 3 drawers and shelving but it can still feel a bit cramped. Archway is a nice place to live if you are willing to pay a lot of money, but if you are looking for something cheaper and still good quality don't come here.
Archway is one of the more expensive accommodations, but it does show in its quality. The kitchen facilities are amazing with a joint kitchen and living area, including a TV and two sofas. The rooms are all en suite and the bathrooms are great and the double beds are quite comfy. It is located right by the Brooks Building, meaning it’s close to pretty much every uni building in the area. As for wifi, it can be pretty on and off sometimes, but when it does work it works well.
