More communal areas are needed
Stayed in Cavendish from September 2017-May 2018. I loved staying in cavendish as although it is shared bathrooms and the rooms are smaller than other accommodation it is overall great what you get for your money. You quickly become close to your flat mates so sharing bathrooms is no problem, the walls are a bit thin and it can be noisy sometimes but you will find that in any university halls. One thing that is annoying that there is no relaxing area in the flat other than a table and bench’s, however me and my flat mates used to bring in our chairs / blankets and have movie nights anyway. The location is perfect only a minute walk to the main campus and about 5 minutes to birley campus, the rooms are cute and it’s a great social halls to get to know people in first year.
Absolutely amazing and brilliant
Cheap halls and it shows but in a fantastic location.
Ok, average hall nothing special
My room flooded several times and I lost 2 weeks of University work because of this. No help from anyone I was just constantly bounced around different sectors in the university and it became clear there was no support.
WiFi sometimes drops, overall happy
It was very spacious; I only had 3 flatmates and we had a big kitchen to ourselves which was great. The location was perfect - central, and only 2 minutes from one of my uni buildings, which meant I could pretty much just roll out of bed. On the negative side, it wasn’t hugely social for me because of how few people I was sharing with, but I didn’t mind because I made good friends with one of them, and I had other friends as well. You can always opt for a flat that has more people too. I had a bit of trouble getting settled in as our toilet flooded the bathroom on our first day there, which meant we had to move all our stuff straight back out and into Cambridge until they could fix it. Once we were back in Cavendish though, I loved it. It was a lot nicer than Cambridge too - more open, less dark, cleaner - so I would defo say that you get more for your money. I personally loved staying here and wish I could stay again this year.
If I'd read these reviews before living here, I might not have picked Cavendish, which would of been the biggest mistake. I had the best, most fun year of my life! Made true friends for life, obviously most likely not with all 17 of the people you share with, but that would be unlikely. Best location, you get the nicest view of sunsets. There's always someone who is up for drinking or going, so is the most social. Even if you're just sitting in the kitchen talking til 3am, those are some of my favourite memories. I'm probably biased because I really did love the people I lived with, and without them it might not have been so great! No the toilets and showers aren't amazing, they can be a bit grim, but as long as you don't go in there expecting a 5* hotel you'll be fine. Would honestly recommend it to anyone just for the awesome people you'll meet, and the epic parties. If you go, good luck, have fun, make the most of first year!
Rooms are okay. Quite small. Kitchen is always a mess and not very many places to sit. No common room. Communal showers, bath and toilets (which never get cleaned)
Cannot express how much of a s****** this place is. Cheap and NOT cheerful.
Things were forever breaking. Complete lack of respect for other peoples property. Dirty. Nosy.
The halls were dirty and the staff were rude. Deffo don't stay there if you can avoid it.
communal everything. Disgusting.
Butterz. This hall is butterz. Its fine if u dont mind sharing a tiny azz kitchen with 17 people, and anyone can walk through every single kitchen in the whole hall. The showers are stupid. Two shared curtains showers and one locked door, whats the point, someone always locking the door. Dont mind the room but it has slight prison vibes. If you like singing alone then dont come here. Walls are so thin you can hear next room farts. The radiator doesnt turn on in the night but automatically turns on from 6:24am (Im nocturnal and dont sleep till about 7am) so try not to caught a flu or cold cus then you'll never be able to recover. The bath is also butterz but just get some cleaning liquid and scrub it about 20 times you'll be fine. LAUNDRY ARE YOU SERIOUS THO 2 washing machines and 2 dryers for the WHOLE BUILDING. Oh the dryers also broke down at least once a month. Toilets. You'll never have a nice and peaceful poo again because everyone can most likely hear you. Thanks
