I have had a great experience so far in Talybont South. Being part of the wider Talybont student area means that this is a very social area with lots going on, every night of the week. A great location for the student gym and courts too.

Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.
Ambient environment. With good people
Good value for money, en-suite bathrooms are great and very convenient. The only downside is that there aren’t more communal areas in the buildings, other than the small kitchens.

Nice accommodation except for the silverfish and spiders. The location is great to town and uni, a bit of a walk but everyone lives in the same student village so it seems homely.
A really social, lively accommodation which made for a very fun experience. Not very modern but this didn’t really matter and rooms had en-suites which was great. I heard that some flats did have minor silverfish problems however I never had this in my flat. Maintenance were very responsive and the cleaners were great and very friendly. Would definitely recommended as a top choice of accommodation for Cardiff University, largely due to the social experience.
I think talybont south is probably one of the nicer accommodations at Cardiff. Taly is probs the best location and being next to the park is a big bonus, the rooms are spacious for what you pay for. There is a rep that it is the party accommodation but it’s not that much of an issue imo if you don’t fancy it. People are generally respectful and there’s a good sense of community, it’s quite social which is a benefit. I think my only issue would be the security, I feel it would benefit from locks inside of the rooms like some of the other accommodations.
Taly South was great during freshers but after that it was just a pain. I was in House 22 and my room was right next to the train tracks which just means you'll end up being kept up most nights or woken up by trains going past. The rooms are very small and cramped but at least you have an ensuite (a wet room). There is a kitchen where you can sit with your house but it is small and there isn't really enough room for everyone to store their food and plates and things. Taly South is great for parties and is super sociable but this can get annoying if you need to study.
Terribly overpriced. If you open the window to get some fresh air prepare to find at least one spider in your room. There are silverfishes, but not too many (at least in autumn, let's see what happen in spring...). Very noisy on wednesday and weekends. The shittiest thing is that once you sign the contract you can't release from it so unless for severe medical reason. So, if you find dirty and loud flatmates, a spider invasion in your room, all of this for 6600£ per year and still 15/20 mins by walking from the university, but you're healthy, you will be locked there until the end of the contract. Well done Cardiff Uni.
Be aware that these halls are Lively! This is great for the first 3 weeks but then it just becomes annoying and distruptive! If you are doing a heavy duty degree i.e. medicine, dentistry, i would avoid!! I needed to move my daughter over to Taly court by December because of the noise. Talycourt is worth paying the little bit extra, bigger and brighter rooms, far nicer enviroment.

Even though it has it’s downsides, I’d argue that Talybont South is the best place to live in first year because it is by far the most social halls. It is so easy to make friends from your house and other houses. Freshers at Taly South is one big, loud party. I’m dreading leaving this place. I’d urge applicants to put Talybont South as your first choice for halls.
I loved my time at Talybont South. I made lifelong friends, enjoyed my flat, the location was great and my room was fine. The kitchens are a good size and there are plenty of shops close by.
Very social, in a good way. Rooms are small but fine however extremely cold and dark if at the back of the house. No where to relax in halls just have kitchen and bedroom. social centre is a study area so there is no where social really to interact. Silverfish are definitely still a problem. Close to local shops and supermarkets and short walk to uni campus, bit longer to heath campus (30 mins).
Very good for social activities and the location isn't too bad. The silverfish infestation certainly needs addressing though; it doesn't bother me too much but constantly seeing loads scuttling around everywhere makes the whole place feel dirty.
Talybont South is great if you're looking to be sociable and want a nice(ish) accommodation in terms of the bedrooms & kitchen. Some flats are renovated (like mine) and they are lovely!! Kitchen is very modern and clean.. but I know they're not all like this. In terms of the 'silverfish infestation' I have seen one the whole time I've been here so don't worry about that. So to summarise all of Taly: Taly South is the most sociable halls. Taly Court is amazing in terms of the facilities (the kitchen and bedrooms are huge!) & closer to Uni, BUT less sociable. Taly North is very similar to Taly South, just not as modern and the kitchens are small - but almost equally sociable as I have many friends there who love it! Taly Gate is apparently amazing (although I've never been in) - but definitely not as sociable and the furthest from the Uni, although the closest to Tesco Extra. In my opinion Taly South is the best of both - a nice place to live (clean & comfortable) but very sociable.
Talybont South has its pros and cons like every hall but I wouldn't live anywhere else. I have met so many people this year dying to move here. It's walking distance in terms of town and the students union but not exactly the shortest walk probably like 20 minutes. The silverfish really haven't been that much of a problem here I've only seen about 5 since I moved in and they never really bother you. Security and housekeeping are always dead on and if you do as they ask you'll never have a problem with them. Loads of the houses have been done up and look great but I know the one I'm in hasn't been so it's just luck whether you get a nice one or not. The wifi constantly drops but that happens all over campus so it's nothing to do with taly but there's no signal at all if you're on the network 3. Maccies and kfc are just up the road and there's a tesco about 5 minute walk away and taxi into town usually costs a fiver so not too bad.
The place to be. If you like a party and to socialise - go to tally south!!
DO NOT LIVE HERE!!!! My room was pitch black due to there being no natural light through the window, making the room extremely dull and sometimes damp. The bathroom was full of mould and dampness also. The light constantly flickered even with about 4 repair jobs. Taly south also has a huge SilverFish problem, so my room was crawling with them- even in my bed at night. SilverFish got everywhere; in my clothes, cupboards, desk and floor. My year in halls was very very unpleasant, and I wouldn't wish this accomodation on my worst enemy! Not worth your money.
The most social halls at Cardiff, everything you need is by it, all the sports facilities and the social centre is a great place to go. It's right by Bute park which is lovely and the massive Tesco is 10 minutes away. The halls itself are okay, they are quite small rooms but there is enough space for everything, they are cleaned weekly and the bathrooms are a really good size. If you end up in a newly renovated house they are lovely. It's only a 15 min walk and o either campus so great for everyone.

Really good halls, good social life but expensive for facilities provided and little space for common area etc. quite a long walk from the uni buildings. wifi very slow. flats all vary between having 4,6 or 8 people
Ah, Taly South Taly South. I am actually going to put some detail into this review for you lurkers. Internet: eduroam is garbage Value for money: you get what you pay for - ever heard of that saying before? To put it simply, the rooms in Taly South are pretty decent (at least they are in my view, since everyone in my flat complains that my room is the biggest but I'm probably just tidier so it looks bigger - lol). I do HATE the bathrooms though, it's literally a wet room so the whole floor gets wet and the toilets have no lids so if you have a special visitor over and need to do a number 2, you'll have to steam up the room with your shower to hide the smell or you will need ask them to kindly not judge / leave the room. Location: The location is alright. Town is about a 30 minute walk away (honestly, it's not long), but it certainly is long when you're drunk and want to get to a club before your drunk coat wears off... no space to write more ah :(
The WiFi is constantly down, the kitchen/dining room is abysmal for an 8 person flat. We can barely fit 5 around the table we have. The rooms are okay, ignoring the initial silverfish infestation. The location is just a 25 minute walk from town centre, so easily done when coming back from a night out. Social life here is definitely the redeeming quality; with 64 rooms in some houses, there is no shortage of social opportunities or flat parties with friends. Overall for what you get I think it's a bit on the pricey side -- I'd recommend Talybont North as a cheaper alternative.
No common areas except Taly Social but the social experience is MUCH better than any other halls I have been in. Every flat in Taly South seem to be friends with each other.
Great social experience , bedroom and kitchen has everything needed.
Found 4 silverfish (some dead, some alive) within 20 minutes of moving in. There were also dead gnats squashed on my bathroom ceiling and hair stuck in the drain. Flush on toilet was faulty too. Although there is no social space, south is definitely the most social out of the Talys, there's always a party nearby. Probably not suited accommodation for light sleepers as it is very noisy until 4am and if you're on bottom floor you do get harassed by reps and drunken people. However, the majority of people who live here are sociable and nice, so if you can tolerate the crappy living conditions you'll love it!

It's the place to be when it comes to being social
its ok, apart from the silverfish
The only halls where you'll actually enjoy life
Such great social life in Talybont South, there's never a quiet moment (warning for people who need absolute silence to get to sleep) and has such a great atmosphere. The common area could be better (there isn't a sofa) but the value for money, it's location (as it's easy to get anywhere) and the amount of people you meet make up for it. Would definitely recommend to put this as your first choice - I love it here.
Good for people, Good for budget living
very social, good for meeting new people. Kitchen is of a good size as is the bedroom, of a better quality and location than talybont north without a great difference in price
It's not taly gate but it's not too bad either
The kitchen and social area really is not big enough for 8 people to all cook and there are not enough surfaces for people to prepare things on. Small social area. But within the rooms themselves there is a surprising amount of storage with in the bedrooms. However, things do change depending what house you are put and some of them have different merits etc
Extremely loud and the occasional silverfish and feeling the cleaner wants you evicted but social life is lit
I live in house 20, the whole house has been refitted with new kitchen and new paint so is excellent value for money. However it is very loud at night as people walk through the street to get to taly court after a night out. Otherwise very enjoyable and not a silverfish in sight
Taly South is one of the more sociable accommodations, so if you're looking for silence then you might want somewhere else! It's around 15/20 minutes' walk away from the main university buildings, but very close to both a Tesco Extra and Express. No sofas to lounge on, just the kitchen chairs- this is a sacrifice that comes with the cheaper price than Gate or Court. The internet connection isn't too bad, but can be temperamental for some; take an ethernet cable! Overall, I've had an amazing first year spent in Taly South, with lovely friends and flatmates!
Definitely the place to be for social life. If you're a bit squeamish then there is a silverfish infestation, bear that in mind as my house is one of the worst and I've had them in my bed. But I still wouldn't pick any other residency over this one, it is definitely the most social and exciting.
Socially, the best place to live. In terms of cleanliness.. It's bearable depending how often you have pres/ have a big clean out or whatever. You even warm to the Silverfish after a while
Great experiance so far but don't hate the door charge system!
If you're a light sleeper, I wouldn't recommend Taly South. There's enough space in your room for one person, no extra space needed really. I'm on the top floor of my house which is nice, I hear living on the bottom house isn't that nice as people walk past your window a lot, you get bugged by Reps trying to sell tickets, and stuff can get nicked from the windowsill. The student feel of Taly South is amazing, especially on big nights out e.g. Halloween. If you're anti-going out or drinking I'd suggest somewhere else. I miss having a sofa, we only have table and chairs. Kitchen is good quality. The heating is rubbish/non-existent. The wifi is awful.
Great place, far from uni, awful internet, good social scene
A pretty decent place to live, wouldn't mind it being closer to the uni though.
Poor wifi, cleaners don't clean but leave notes telling us to clean so unsure what they are hired to do.
Facility wise it's not great in comparison to the other but it is by far the most social halls and this just trumps all the negatives wouldn't change it for the world
Good place to have a good time.
About a 20 minute walk to the main campus, 30 minutes to town. No social space, apart from the communal kitchen, so no sofas/tv area. Cleaner comes once a week so must stay on top of cleaning yourselves. Best place to be for social scene, loads of parties and friendly people. Laundry can be expensive at £2.50 a go, and internet is a bit on and off but is good most of the time.
Silverfish infestation, constant noise, no hot water and grotty rooms. Need I say more?
Would recommend - only good for the people
Very social, great halls to be in for first year. Yes it's not amazing and the rooms aren't that big but if I hadn't of been there I wouldn't of met all the great people I did.
Best place for social life- my best friends are fro my Taly South house! Aside from the silverfish it was ok cleanliness wise. Pretty basic compared to other unis' halls but way cheaper so you can't really complain!
Defenatly the most social hall at Cardiff uni - would recommend to anybody looking to study here
The most social of the halls. No regrets in living in taly south it's the best choice I ever made!
Very social but not enough communal area
It is right in the centre of first year student life, good value for money and I definitely would choose it again if I could start over.
