Being in Taly Gate the first year after it's been build was definitely a great experience. I could not have imagined getting into better accommodation for that amount of money. Cardiff is known for its cheap accommodation, but it doesn't mean horrible conditions. The rooms are quite big, with the 3/4 bed, massive desk and waredrobe and a proper en-suite. The kitchen might be a hit and miss - some flats have a massive, square kitchen, however in our (and I guess most people's case) it was so narrow, it was difficult for more than two people to be in there. However, with the lounge (with a tv) being right next to it, it wasn't a problem. Overall, I couldn't be happier to be put in that accommodation.

All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation

What tenancy length do I need?

Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.

Should I stay in catered student accommodation?

This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.

What is a guarantor and do I need one?

A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.

Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?

Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.

What bills will my rent include?

If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.

What is purpose-built student accommodation?

Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.

Will my student accommodation be furnished?

Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

One of the most expensive Cardiff uni accommodations but good value for money. The rooms are nicer than the Liberty Living accommodations at a higher price. The location is great in terms of being a few minutes walk to Tesco and about 4 minutes to the laundry room. It's also very close to the river which makes a nice walk to uni/the town. The main downside is the 25-30 minute walk to the university (Biosciences building) with an extra 10+ minutes if you're going to town. Any problems I had were very quickly sorted out by maintenance. However, with cleaners after the first term there were times where the kitchen wouldn't be cleaned for 2 weeks. The reception will also only accept Royal Mail so any other packages have to be collected by students. Otherwise, kitchen spaces/TV area is very nice and wifi is very fast. The rooms are very spacious, with lots of storage space and a large bed, desk and window. Heaters are a bit difficult to control but very nice in the winter.

Stayed for one night - never, ever again! Room not even cleaned to a basic standard of cleanliness, expected to use previous occupants dirty bedlinen and towels. Took nearly 3 hours to get bedlinen changed and a further complaint to get bathroom cleaned. If you have a room at the back of Talybont Gate beware noise from boy racers going in and out of 24 hour McDonalds and KFC. Reception staff are friendly and helpful, cleaning staff could do a far better job. Shame as it's a bright, modern building and student flats are a well planned functional space.

Stayed here for first year. Bit of a trek to lectures, but by far the nicest Talybont residence.

Talybont gate is great! There's a great balance between being quiet and social! Tescos exta is so close which is great but the main building is a good 30/20 min walk which does get annoying every day!

Really well designed halls, short Walk from tesco, bed bigger than you think and TV is really a nice touch, sociable enough without being too noisy, except if your room is facing macdonalds then you get the bin men waking you up at 6 am, but the walk to uni is a good half an hour, if you are prepared to walk/have a bike/car then fine

Best halls in terms of space, toilets/bathrooms to yourself, secure key cards and a great experience.

The facilities at Taly Gate are superb and I have loved the social element I have been blessed enough to experience! It is quiet enough to study, but you can always guarantee someone will be out! Maintenance are quite slow to respond, but do a good job once they do arrive. Cleaners were very friendly, although rotas were somewhat unorganised at times

Lovely Building, and within main uni complex, but distance to laundry services is quite far, and the quality of cleaning/maintenance is not great.
