All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation
What tenancy length do I need?
Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
Should I stay in catered student accommodation?
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
What is a guarantor and do I need one?
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
What bills will my rent include?
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
What is purpose-built student accommodation?
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Will my student accommodation be furnished?
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

Having so much fun here :) Great atmosphere and lovely people.
Lived at Orme House for the last 5 years and I would definitely recommend to anyone who’s looking for accommodation close to the campus. Lovely staff who are very welcoming and quick to see to any issues or needs.
Reception is always friendly and always asks how my day has been. The rooms are spacious and well worth the money.
Lovely rooms and building. Staff are always helpful and maintenance are quick to sort any issues out 😀
a variety of free events on every week, nice accommodation and ideally positioned (quick to get to uni, the CEC at the hospital, shops etc - all within walking distance).
Always really friendly and welcoming staff especially at the front desk, great location for shopping and close to uni
Good events each week, friendly staff
Good living for the price tag, great location near the town centre, supermarkets and bus stops to get to campus or to stoke station
Living here is so convenient for uni! The town centre is a few minute walk away as are a morrisons, a lidl and an aldi so there’s choice for where to food shop. Dakota is lovely and holds some really good events to get involved in! There have been some issues with wifi connection and speed but I’ll be rebooking for next year :)
My three years at Orme House have been exceptional! Dakota, the receptionist, provides prompt and friendly service. The room is not only amazing and spacious but also well laid out. The clean gym, generous common room, and super-fast Wi-Fi further elevate the experience. I highly recommend Orme House for its top-notch facilities and welcoming atmosphere. As little as a 10 minute bus ride from the university, Orme House is arguably one of the best student accommodations in Newcastle-Under-Lyme.
Nice apartments, fit everything that I need it to. Really friendly staff and student wardens who sort any issues promptly. Easy access to Keele Uni as it's right on the bus route. Downside is the lack of security out of hours in comparison to what there would be with on campus accommodation, also the wifi can be a bit unreliable.
Been living at Orme House for 2 years now and I have loved it. Although the rooms are expensive, they do come fully furnished and do remain clean at the beginning of the year. Being close to university means that I have no worries getting in at the time needed. A thank you to Dakota who has made it Orme welcoming for all to have a friendly face at reception. Dakota has planned several events which have allowed me to socialise and have fun at the same time balancing my degree.
I've had an absolute blast living at Orme house this year! Property team (Customer Service Advisors, Property Manager, Maintenance and Cleaner) are all so kind and helpful and make it a lovely place to live! Such a nice social vibe and everyone's always happy to have a chat. Rooms are so comfy and clean and any issues get sorted really well!
My experience at Orme House so far has been very pleasant. I prefer to live on my own an commute to the local university and the location itself is very convenient as I have easy access to the buses as well as stores nearby/ town. Any issues or concerns can be taken up with the building concierge so a simple email will address any of these very quickly. My room is perfect for me as I'm living alone and I'm yet to find any problems. The building itself hasn't faltered at all; laundry services can be used whenever you need and they're a lot more accessible than you would expect.
Terrible internet. Old Orme building windows are not able to be opened.
Great staff that work here! So helpful and accommodating. Good location as it’s close to bus stops which can take you to uni and to Hanley. Also very close to Newcastle town centre so a great place to live.
Area is close to uni and amazing for transport. Management are super friendly especially Chloe, makes everyone feel at home. Rooms are gorgeous!!! So nice spacious and such lovely views over the park ! Super safe environment !!! Some troubles with antisocial behaviour after management have left which cannot be helped in student accommodation , however whenever reported it is dealt really well by management!!
My accommodation service so far has been excellent. The staff have all been very welcoming and supportive. I was originally worried that living in a studio flat would not promote socialising between other students staying here but having the common room accessible whenever has negated this issue.
My Accomodation experience so far has been fantastic and overall a one of a kind service. I originally lived independently in my own flat and had concerns about living with other students and people in a shared accommodation but I can honestly say that concern and nerves was totally erased as soon as I stepped into the building. The staff here are the some of the funniest and most welcoming people I've met especially Chloe who is our main rep at the house. My top floor studio flat is beautifully furnished, very clean and overall perfect size for my single occupancy I would even consider living here with my partner next year as they accept Dual Accompany!! The view from my window is superb and honestly I wouldn't change my room nor choice of house for anything. Socially, I found everyone very friendly too as we have a group chat and several points to socialise such as the common room.I would like to remention Chloe once again for her outstanding support for me during this difficult move
Love living here, people are friendly and so are staff. out of the city but also a 5 min walk from it which is fun. love it.
Customer service advisor makes Orme House the lovely home that it is! There’s a wide range of rooms so everyone is catered for. As a disabled student, I appreciate the elevator and the accessible room! The common room is social and the gym is lovely. The rooms are spacious and student life is very sociable here!
Lovely and helpful staff that encourages socialising with other students. Great place to live
Overall the student accommodation is great. But the WiFi is dreadful
Very nice staff! Would recommend
Been living here for 5 months now and staff are helpful and maintenance are always available to help. I've also managed to meet a lot of friends
It was an okay experience, the receptionists are lovely and so kind. But the wifi is appalling 80% of the time I used my data which should not be the case? We can all agree on that so yes definitely fix that guys
Best student accommodation there is, such gorgeous rooms!
great for first years! good walking distance from supermarkets and Hanley! Regular maintenance and cleaning of the corridors
Really do like it here, would recommend for Second years +
Decent location, friendly staff, close transport to keele university, and a short walk to nearby shops. The rooms are better than the majority of rooms I’ve had on campus, however new barns is a lot better built. The fittings on the windows here draft and cause condensation; then mould.
The location of this accommodation is great. Shops such as Lidl, Aldi and Morrisons are all walking distance, even the high street! This is great for people who can’t drive yet. Rooms are spacious and have a fair amount of storage. Showers are great. The management are really nice and are happy to help you with any problems you face. Only improvement I would suggest for the accommodation is a better ventilation system.
Good flat WiFi isn't Great but it's no worce than any other student accommodation.
Its an easy commute to keele university and is a quick walk to aldi and morrisons
Needs better internet connection
Orme house is located exceptionally well, with over four supermarkets within walking distance and a bus stop on the same road going to the university. There was a change in management while I’ve been here but the new staff are great and an improvement from the last. There’s a large common room which was perfect for social gatherings and the building is really modern and pleasant to live at
