All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation
What tenancy length do I need?
Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
Should I stay in catered student accommodation?
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
What is a guarantor and do I need one?
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
What bills will my rent include?
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
What is purpose-built student accommodation?
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Will my student accommodation be furnished?
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

They did not keep up to datte with safety checks, this has resulted in them having to do building works, there's no date on when this will end and 9am-5pm every day you can hear power tools outside. This lack of care for matinence extends to inside the building aswell with the house falling apart. I was hovering and ome of the flooring came up with the hover. Every surface was dirty when I moved in we've done our best to clean it but the entire place is just grimey, it needs a professioal deep clean with products too expensive and things we're not allowed to take apart (like moving the oven) taken apart. There are no social spaces, they advertised that there would be but for some reaon the external building works affect the ndide of the building. I was promised that this would be resolved within a month of me moving in. It hasnt. Staff refuse to respond to emails, possibly because they know what they're doing violates helth and safety.
Very nice people very chatty and nice location :)
Unfortunately my experience has been stubbed by the alexandra halls. they have wind blowing through the buildings and water coming into the rooms. The landlord is unsympathetic and stingy, people with disabilities have been denied access to move to main campus as it is closer. The hall is about 2 miles from the actual campus so you have to walk this every day. I wish I never went, as it's not at all a uni life vibe, its really strict and unsocial. It's in one of the worse places in town as its so far, the wind and sea comprimise it so much. Most of the residents tend to be doing masters, so its not ideal for a first year. The chaps at the front desk are nice but thats as much as I can postively give. All my friends who have visited have been in disbelief. It is nothing like what the pictures portray. I arrived with the wall paper falling down and the locks and windows broken, which still haven't been fixed as they will make the resident pay for they're incompetence. It's appauling!
Alexandra halls is a fantastic place to live amazing for the price. The staff are incredible and if you have issues, they get solved really quickly.
Worth Paying the Extra for Uni Accommodation Instead
Great place to live with helpful and great staff
Overpriced for what you get. If you want sea views I recommend the uni accommodation. One hoover shared between the whole building Not all the windows open in my room or flat. Better value for money elsewhere. Internet has been fine and fast. Company and staff response to the Covid situation has been awful. Personally I'd say again, uni accomodation is far better value for money and services. Laundry room is one of the most expensive in Aberystwyth too.
Nice place to live, but far along the seafront
Stayed here in second year of uni in a classic en suit. The rooms are very spacious with double beds, lots of storage for clothes and other belongings (including large built-in wardrobe, under-bed storage, drawers and shelves). En suit was very nice, with a good shower. The staff was exceptionally friendly, making me feel very welcomed. The reception take in post for you, meaning you'll never miss a parcel. The prices are very reasonable, cheaper than the equivalent university accommodation; not as cheap as some student houses, but much nicer and more modern however. Highly recommended for students looking for accommodation.
Great place, lived here for a few years and got only good things to say about the staff and the rooms, if you have a problem it gets sorted nearly the same day most of the time, don't know what all these other negative reviews are about, can't see the staff being anything other than great tbh.
Awful place. Fire doors have gaps under and next to them so it's like trying to sleep in a wind tunnel, and obviously they're not actually fire proof!! Electrics are unsafe. 3 days after reporting the problems still no one from maintenance has even looked at them. They say you have a 14 day cooling off period, but they won't honour it if you want to cool off. Avoid these halls like the plague!!
Great for the sea view, but that's all. Accommodation vastly overpriced. I had leaking windows and nothing was done, bathroom out of order for months and months, due to severe leak from the roof and prices once promised for the following year, changed with no notice or reason as to why.
Lovely location, lovely modern bathrooms and kitchens, good size bedrooms with double beds
Would not recommend Damp in room which was just painted over Electrical fire due to heater swich. Heater swich was reported to be not working. But was told to turn off a fuse box. Turned it back on and I was on fire. Reception staff can be a bit off WiFi slow in evenings No social events planed as a hall even though it says that on the website.
Very poor. Damp in my room which was only painted over and a house mate had an electrical fire due to the heater swich failing. Had been reported but they said just turn it off at the fuse box..... a few weeks later turned it back on a it caught fire!! Reception staff can be a little off and don't seam very helpful. WiFi is slow on the evenings. Expensive when compared to private accommodation. Would not recommend! !!!!!
I have lived in three different halls, Alex, Cwrt Mawr and Penglais Farm. All were great in different ways.
I was living there first year, a bit expensive and far from university but it was good experience.
Very nice accommodation and worth while living in
it was okay has been improved since being there
Room had terrible damp and the space under the "lift up" bed was literally just concrete from the foundation underneath, not even a bit of floorboard or something! Couldn't open any of the windows in the flat - not even in the kitchen which didn't have working extractor fans for months! Things just fell off the walls whether it was shelves or towel rails (not from misuse, we're talking second week) and it was horrid As another review said, don't live here if you enjoy the internet - WiFi and wired internet was awful and if you complained you were told to contact an external company who did nothing as they wanted at least 8,000 other students to complain first to make it worth their time! Only thing that makes it worth it is the atmosphere and the staff, otherwise overpriced and generally crappy!
Sea views awesome, Staff are great. Common room had a TV and was clean. Wifi was absolutely awful and throttled.
Incredible hall... easily the best!
Love living here!
Good flatmates, brand new this year, 3/4 bed, good ensuite and have a TV in the living room.
Cons?
Not much kitchen space so hard to cook when all of your flatmates are trying to as well.
