When I applied for this course, I didn't quite realise that a physics degree doesn't make you as employable as an engineering degree for instance. They always say that you have many career options - but what they don't mention is that that's because you have a little knowledge in a lot of fields, but without the specialist knowledge employers usually prefer. read more

The Physics modules are much harder than the Maths ones. Some of the applied Maths courses aren't very interesting. Overall most of the course content is very interesting and the job prospects are pretty good. read more

I think most degrees aren't worse the ridiculous tuition price. As for the course, astrophysics content is often taught in a random-feeling fashion - some modules bounce from topic to topic with little of the logical and natural flow of other courses. read more

Had to teach myself nearly the whole course. No support if you haven’t done Further Maths. No student support, no DASS support, no career support or any sense of involvement from the university. So so many issues in welfare, lecturers being openly discriminant against poor students, head of pastoral care for year groups going for pints on campus over welfare meetings, it’s a mess. read more

Overall physics is pretty good. Your mate who got into Oxford will look down on you, and you'll swear you aren't bitter that St Andrews rejected your application, but when you're taught by Brian Cox none of that matters. read more

Physics, BSc Hons FullTime

I studied for a masters degree at the University of Manchester. Given my time again I would never go back here, based on my experiences. The academics did not care one jot about my education. There were very few classes and my polite emails asking for help were ignored. I self-taught almost everything, which was extremely stressful. I actually received more help online from staff at other universities (I am not making this up!). All communication on my course had to go through the school office via their official email. As such, there were some lecturers on the course who I never saw in person. I did not feel like a student here, at all. I really regret not going to Surrey or Birmingham who have a more open and friendly approach with their students. In summary I did not receive an education at Manchester. It is a degree factory with unfriendly staff, both academic and clerical. read more

Honestly 4 of the hardest years of my life, but really benefitted coming out the other end. It is a course where the help is everywhere if you look for it, but it is exceptionally hard to come out with a really high end degree because of the intense workload. That's probably why it's so prestigious! The value for money is brilliant with world experts in physics on every corridor and also PhD students, getting teaching positions across the school to help bring a coherent teaching experience. They have been in your shoes recently and so have an empathy along with great insight into the course. The tutors are really good but some don't care. However the pastoral system in the school along with the fluid conscientiousness to student voice and representatives means that the school is always looking to improve, a modest but driven young Head of School who is always willing to help students. The staff understand how the students shape the school to some extent, even with the prestige. read more
