Points of entry for Biochemistry with a Modern Language BSc Hons

Year 1

Entry requirements for Biological Sciences and Molecular Biology, Biophysics and Biochemistry at The University of Manchester

Entry requirements are the formal requirements students need to meet to be considered for a place on a university course. But, each year many universities accept students with lower grades. The bar chart below shows the actual UCAS tariff points of students currently on this course.
A,A,A

Required subjects for Biochemistry with a Modern Language BSc Hons at The University of Manchester

We require grades AAA-AAB, including a minimum of grades AA in Chemistry and one of Biology, Physics and Mathematics (the Core Sciences). Applicants predicted/who have achieved a B in their third A level will receive an offer of AAB, while those predicted/who have achieved an A or A* will be eligible for an offer of AAA. If you are taking Chemistry and no other Core Science subject, we can consider you for an AAA offer if you are also sitting an A level in Geography, Psychology, Environmental Studies or Physical Education in place of the second Core Science. If your predicted grades are one grade below our minimum entry requirements we may still make you an aspirational offer if you meet our contextual criteria. Subjects with overlapping content are not normally considered as separate A-levels. For example, Further Mathematics is not considered alongside Mathematics and Human Biology is not considered alongside Biology. If you are concerned there is too much overlap in your A level subjects, please contact us for advice before applying. We believe that practical skills in the sciences are integral to a candidate's understanding and appreciation of these subjects. Therefore we encourage all applicants to undertake any practical skills assessment if it is available in their qualification. Where applicants are applying for science and related degrees, this is likely to be made explicit in the offers you will receive. Language entry requirements In addition to the above, each language has specific entry requirements. - French: an A-level in French (minimum grade B if taking two Core Sciences, or A if taking one and a soft science) or equivalent is required. - German: an A-level in German (minimum grade B if taking two Core Sciences, or A if taking one and a soft science) or equivalent is required. - Spanish: an A-level in Spanish (minimum grade B if taking two Core Sciences, or A if taking one and a soft science) or equivalent is required. - Italian: an A-level in Italian (minimum grade B if taking two Core Sciences, or A if taking one and a soft science) or equivalent is required. - Japanese: no prior knowledge of Japanese is assumed, but evidence of linguistic proficiency is required, eg GCSE grade 7 or A in a foreign language. - Mandarin: no prior knowledge of Mandarin is assumed, but evidence of linguistic proficiency is required, eg GCSE grade 7 or A in a foreign language. Typical Contextual offer: AAB-ABB (including specific subjects). Typical WP++ Contextual offer: ABB (including specific subjects).

It is a good course over all. The practicals are not upto the mark. As STEM majors, we have the minimum lab classes which also are done in pairs. Working in pairs isn't as hands-on and helpful as working alone. read more

A good course, although sometimes the lecturers aren't very relevant and haven't done research for over 30 years. The selection of personal tutors is terrible, they do not align with your own interests, which in biology can be extremely varied. read more

The first year is more oriented towards general biology knowledge, but its quite interesting anyways. The facilities are nice and the tutorial scheme is really helpful. The director of the course is really nice and innovative so a trip to Chester Zoo was organised for us in Welcome week and it was nice to meet people in the course. In the second year it begins to be more zoology directed and more interesting. Lecturers overall are pretty nice but some classes that are too much molecular biology related can get quite technical and boring, but apparently it gets better throughout the years. So far so great read more

UoM is pretty awesome, there are so many things to do, in Biology and also in societies. The Biology course is pretty great; I’d say the teaching is fantastic and I am really enjoying my lectures (a first year student right now). I really like how varied it is, but if you don’t its really easy to switch courses at the beginning of Y1 or for Y2. I recently got to go on a field course to Mallorca, which was so fun, met so many new people, and even stayed a bit longer after they left to travel around alone. They really are flexible. Also the Biological Sciences Office brings in cute little dogs every so often for students to pet, which is adorable! The one thing I’d say is not great about Biology is that the society doesn’t do many socials etc, but I think that’s because they don’t get a lot of money from the Uni, sadly. But overall, I love my course, and UoM gives you loads of opportunities to get super employable. read more

- I do not think this course is worth £9250 per year - teaching is very hit and miss with some lecturers being inspiring and entertaining, some being the opposite - personally I have a very nice tutor (Jean-Marc <3) but for other people I know that isn’t the case - Course content, especially first year is very geared towards the medical side of biology - I’m not feeling optimistic about my career prospects, put it that way read more

Biology with Science & Society, BSc Hons FullTime

This course was excellent. The content was amazing and I think some of the units should be compulsory for all science students, as there is zero point in practicing science without a true understanding of its limitations and it's place in society. £9000 is too much for something that is lecture based. This course suffers due to the poor organisation of the life sciences faculty, which is an institutional problem for UoM. A problem for me was too few people on the course makes it hard to find your sort of people and make close friends. I hope this course is pushed and explained better in future, as I think many would enjoy it and a larger group is good both socially and academically. I feel like I have learned a lot from this course that I wouldn't have learned anywhere else. There is not enough guidance from the faculty for students doing this course, as all of their information pertains to lab heavy courses, with emphasis on biomed and biochem. We are forgotten read more

Life Sciences, BSc Hons FullTime

Don't pick life sciences- opt onto an actual degree programme from the start, and if you want to change at the end of first year you can. It really is pointless. It's a very small group which gives you minimum opportunity to meet people in lectures as your tutor group members all take different units, and it's extremely unorganised. read more
