Course structure is appalling compared to other universities. Department is aware of the unpopularity of first year subjects like Doing History but refuse to make any changes. Also won't make changes to the two compulsory subjects that are very unpopular in third year. Dissertation is restricted to third year module choice topic. History Department makes a big fuss about the wide choice of subjects but choice is limited by compulsory subjects and staff leave. Support in the department is very limited and personal tutor ineffectual. Exeter and Birmingham have better course structures than Holloway. read more

History at Royal Holloway is a quality course, the lecturers and professors are mainly leaders in their strand of research, meaning they have bounds of knowledge and are very willing to engage with students as a consequence. My personal tutor Dr Rebecca Jinks was an angel, and from what I've herad from other students, most of the advisers are the same. You can go to them with any quarries and they'll give you a meaningful answer; it feels as a student that your adviser does genuinely care about your success. The course content is strong offering modules from the earliest works by Homer to right up til now. All of which are interesting and engaging, the only criticism i have of the course content is the noticeable left leaning opinions and attitudes of Royal Holloway, as some conservative arguments can be overlooked. read more

No relationship with personal tutor. Support is not there on any level, on the course or anywhere else at this university. Seminars are useless. Lectures are okay but only 4 a week, don't feel it is value for money. read more

Absolutely amazing!!! Just finished 1st year and wish I could do it all over again!! Lots of modules to choose from from modern Victorians to ancient Rome! Instead of sticking to the usual secondary school WW2 they let you delve into new and unexplored parts of history - very interesting and there's something for everyone! Personal tutors can always be of reach through email whenever you need to ask a question or for general help! Teaching quality is very good as most lectures are taught by those who are leading researchers in that field/topic! Highly recommend it!! Ooo and history society are always planning holidays away each year! I went to Athens 2015 and it was absolutely amazing the sun the beaches the Greek markets and the amazing historical monuments which you could visit too e.g. Acropolis! read more
