Ormskirk Student Life
Ormskirk is the ideal town for those who prefer a more slow-paced life. The town offers all the amenities you would need as a student, whilst being in a great location to explore the nearby coast, countryside and major cities of Northern England.
Cost of Living
Student accommodation costs range from £62 - £180 per week; the average is £137 per week.
Compare the average elsewhere: Newcastle: £149/week, Lancaster: £158/week, Leeds: £177/week.
(Prices are for all purpose-built student accommodation (both private and university-owned) over the last 12 months, as listed on StudentCrowd)
Nights Out
Ormskirk is not a place known for its nightlife but there are few bars which students head to. Popular spots are Alpine, Mustard, Styles and Lime Tyger. If you are someone who likes to go ‘out out’ then best to head to nearby Liverpool which is easily reachable by a 25-minute train ride or split the cost of a taxi between friends.
Public Transport
The town centre is a ten-minute walk or two-minute shuttle bus journey from the university campus. If you are looking to travel out of Ormskirk, it is well connected by road and rail. The main train station situated in the centre runs regular direct services to nearby cities such as Liverpool and Preston.
Eating Out
Cobble is a cool small independent cafe, serving breakfast, brunch and lunch and cater to vegetarians and gluten-free too. Make sure to try one of their speciality milkshakes!
Just down the road from the university campus is a traditional pub called The Stanley Gate. If you love tucking into good quality pub grub, in a cosy and friendly atmosphere, then this pub will be right up your street.
Wan’s Chinese Takeaway is a late-night tasty takeaway and is a favourite among Ormskirk residents and students. Whether it's to enjoy at home or a pit stop after a night out - if you like Chinese food you are sure to become a regular.
Shopping
The Ormskirk street market has been held in the town for more than 700 years. It takes place every Thursday and Saturday in the heart of the town with around 100 stalls selling tasty food, clothes, handmade gifts, flowers and so much more. In addition to the market, the pedestrianised high street has all the everyday shops that you will need.
Days Out
A mere 20 minutes away from Ormskirk is the traditional seaside town of Southport, you can expect fairground rides, a water slide park, model railway village and of course fish ‘n’ chips! What’s not to love?
The birthplace of The Beatles, Liverpool, is the closest city from Ormskirk and is a popular destination for many students. The city has had an impressive amount of regeneration over the last few years and is packed with attractions and entertainment to experience.
Formby is a stunning coastline of dunes and pine woodlands. It is 30-minutes away from Ormskirk and is an idyllic destination to get some sea air. Head for a walk on the beach, or if it’s looking like a sunny day pack a picnic and enjoy a full day beside the sea.
Manchester is an hour away by car, it’s the cosmopolitan hub of Northern England and is well worth a day trip. There’s a lot to see and do whatever your interests are, whether that be culture, shopping, eating or drinking.
