All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation

What tenancy length do I need?

Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.

Should I stay in catered student accommodation?

This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.

What is a guarantor and do I need one?

A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.

Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?

Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.

What bills will my rent include?

If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.

What is purpose-built student accommodation?

Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.

Will my student accommodation be furnished?

Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

Overall good experience, food was decent but got a bit repetitive. Quite good value considering Bristol rent prices. Would be nice if student bar was used more often and more events organised. Also more encouragement of meeting other people throughout the accommodation.

I chose Wills Hall because it was out of the city. It has a lot of green space, grass and trees: more than any other Bristol student accommodations. From the outside, the buildings are beautiful, old-style light-brick, and very much the perfect university experience. From the inside of Old Quad (where I stayed), it is very dark, dingy, and brick-red tiles. Very dusty (upon moving in), damp mould is expected, and the windows are all covered by metal bars. The showers are 2 to 12 people, toilets are 3 to 12 people, kitchen is 1 very small kitchen to 12 people. By "kitchen" I mean one surface, a few cupboards, one fridge-freezer, one microwave, one kettle, one toaster. However, the area is beautiful, there is a basketball court onsite that can be used by anyone for anything, there's a tennis court onsite, there's a pool table, the dining hall is huge and laid out like Hogwarts, and there are monthly formal dinner events. P.S. DON'T STEP ON THE GRASS inside the quad.

Do not and I repeat, DO NOT, live here. Especially in Old Quad, if you find yourself living in Old Quad, move out. The rooms are in extremely poor quality, the windows leak water when it rains and the person in charge of Wills Hall is extremely rude and unhelpful. Do not live here, save your money.

The way it's set up makes it really hard to make friends, this is specially bad for international students. The food is simple not good, the taste is generally bad and the portion sizes are small. Breakfast on weekdays run from 7:30-9 which is just unrealistic for most students to make it to (you'll realise once you start uni). The management makes it worse by "offering" alternative managements during holidays. You shouldn't stay here during holidays as they pretend you don't exist and limit every facility available including the laundry and hot water. The location is bad as you can't get anywhere quickly without a bus, and the buses are not reliable. The only social event is the formals however this is not a friend making environment, you must already have friends to go with. As for the social spaces, there's a room with a few couches and a study room but they're not places you'd want to spend several hours in. The positive parts include, decent wifi and tennis courts.

I am an international student and I joined Wills hall without knowing its reputation. It made it very hard to make friends with students from other halls. They would just completely dismiss me as soon as I said I was from Wills hall. It made me very sad and anxious to talk to other students and as a consequence I didn't make many friends. There are some posh people at Wills hall but they aren't that bad and I feel that the reverse snobbery is largely unjustified. If I had known about the students population's attitude to Wills hall before I probably would have stayed somewhere else. It really did contributed to me having a terrible time at university unfortunately.

Wills hall is an amazing place to live. The rooms aren't too small, especially in the Old Quad. It has a great social life and it was great to spend my first year here.
