All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation
What tenancy length do I need?
Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
Should I stay in catered student accommodation?
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
What is a guarantor and do I need one?
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
What bills will my rent include?
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
What is purpose-built student accommodation?
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Will my student accommodation be furnished?
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

hemal helped me book my room for next year, and helped clean my vent.
Hemal helped me with the check in and take my stuff to the room. 5 star service
Hemal helped me book a room for this year. Good customer service
Nice to be here close to the uni and my friends
Hemal and Jack helped me move rooms
Jack and Hemao are great all the staff are brilliant. Things get sorted very quickly. Lovely common room
Hemel was good help when my heater wasn’t working
Hemal was a very good receptionist and had a very good customer service too
My room is really spacious studio and Hemal and Jack are really friendly! Really quiet and safe place to stay!
I’d like to mention Venal and Jack, they were being super friendly and helpful at all times.
Josh was brilliant, gave us all the help we needed with our microwave and bins and made a genuine effort to make us feel appreciated here, he also made jokes with us and made us feel at home, 11/10 could not ask for more from him
Great value for money near the city with friendly people always there to help. Maintenance people fixed any problems at the earliest possibility and were respectful and kind throughout :)
Good place for students, decent rooms. And the staff are amazing 👏
Amazing place to stay at, next to campus and stadium. The building is a little old but still very nice. Hemal and Josh were very lovely and helped me with the maintenance problem that I had and it was sorted out very fast.
Alright area to live on. Near town and train station. The accommodation is amazing. Staff are friendly. Hemal helped me move out.
I had a good experience in the Grange before when Isobel, Tahir and everyone were there. As an International student, they would help me out so much in helping me understand how to pay my rent and what rules I should follow and everything. Unfortunately, the team on site now are horrible! They do not help at all with anything and the staff keep changing every day so I don't feel safe anymore because I see new people there every day. The reception guy Jack was very rude to me and told me to figure things out on my own when I said I was having trouble with accommodation and asked to extend my stay by one week. I don't have any family in the UK to go to. He almost threatened me saying action will be taken if I don't move out by the time mentioned in the contract. I got so scared and was helpless and now my local friends tell me they got an extension without any problem so I guess he is biased toward helpless international students!
It was a safe space and really close to the uni, and the staff was really nice. Thank you.
Served it’s purpose, the property was as advised and very good for the price.
Josh has really supported myself and my roommates throughout a stressful situation and has able to resolved our issue.
The man name Daniel on the counter is very helpful and quickly resolve our troubles 5* for his service
I want to thank my Housing Officers Tahir and Isobel. They are ever tirelessly resolving my ever-ending problems. It is not always merry as living in student accommodation can be challenging but they always have a smile and solutions. Thank you so much as you make my study very easy and i don't have to worry about where i will be staying.. Accommodation is a challenge and costly in Leicester as i spent 2 weeks living in a costly hotel but no more and they give me lots of options at reasonable prices. Thank you so much..
It’s quiet and serene, budget friendly option for international students
The location was perfect for me, as it was within walking distance of campus and all the amenities I needed. The room itself was clean and well-maintained, with all the necessary furniture and appliances. I appreciated that the kitchen was fully equipped with utensils and cookware, which made it easy to prepare my own meals. The bathroom was also clean and functional, and I never had any issues with hot water or water pressure.
Good had a great time no noise or issues staff are nice too
Really comfortable and nice place to stay
All the facilities here are so good and it is quite convenient to go to university as it is so near to the university
Tahir, Isobel, jade and Mandy are very helpful and helped with lots of issues I had.
Tahir, Isobel, Jade and Mandy are extremely kind and always helpful and smile loads
Tahir and Jade are great, the whole team is amazing I love living here
My experience at the Grange has been amazing so far. The staff have been very helpful! Tahir, Isobel and Jade greet me almost everyday with the utmost excitement and it always cheers me up! Mandy makes sure things are clean and I usually have a quick chat with her when I meet her as well and I love the experience I have with the accommodation mostly because I am comfortable and welcomed at all times.
Great staff very helpful in all situations
The security of the accommodation is commendable and the staff members are very helpful as well.
Everyone on reception is lovely and very helpful - especially Tahir. Overall a very good experience.
Really good staff on reception
Best place to live, staff are always friendly and do their best to help if you have any issues. Rooms are spacious and definitely worth it for the price
Worst decision I have ever made to stay here. The only positive I can take is the location which is on the doorstep of DMU and a 5-10 min walk to town. It is almost impossible to sleep at night as you get the drunk people spilling out of rileys and the surrounding pubs as well as loud boy racers. The reception is hardly ever open so don't expect to receive any packages on time as the 'back in ten minutes' sign is a permanent fixture. The maintenance is painfully slow as I had water pouring out of my ceiling at 5 in the morning but was not fixed for 3 days. kitchen appliances are awful and we were lacking a remote for the TV in the kitchen. Laundry is almost impossible as there are 3 machines for the entire building.
FUMING! Moved out 2 months ago and haven’t received my refund from my deposit!!!!!
cleaners only come once a fortnight for the kitchen WiFi speeds fluctuate staff in reception are barely there
Do not live at the grange, there are two pubs around the area and there is constant noise. In addition there is a construction company as your neighbour everyday they wake you up with their machines and tips. It's horrible worst! place to live ever, I regret my decision everyday.
I don't know even where to start to be honest. If I knew about it earlier I wouldn't have moved in. It's easy to access to go to lectures that's the only positive thing I can mention. You never see staff around and when you do go and look for them for any enquiry they are never around, always with the message saying "we will be back in 10 minutes". One day I stayed for more than 45 minutes and no one was back to the desk. Very bad organised. The rooms are not worth it for the price. Very expensive with basically no walls because I could hear people conversations, people having sex even 3 doors away from mine and people just walking. Had sleepless nights in that place! Riley's downstairs makes it even worse, screaming at night, drunk people, fights.. a jungle basically. People I was sharin with were not friendly, dirty and very disrespectful (the bin could stay in the kitchen for more than 6-8 weeks stinking and the staff won't even take action of that).
Unless you don't like sleeping I wouldn't recommend living here. You'll be kept awake by either drunk people, hanky panky noises, cars revving, fights and occasional fireworks being thrown at the building. Location is good, walking to town is easy and walking into uni is less than 5 minutes to most buildings. The internet is awful, hardly works and when it does work it's just slow. The cleaners barely come when they're supposed to but when they do they don't even get the hoover or mop out or do any actual cleaning. Nice place to live if you don't mind the block door being ripped off it's hinges mid evening (didn't get replaced for about 15-20 hours after). The laundry room is ridiculously expensive and whenever you go to do your washing you have to wait because there's only 3 machines and the third doesn't work most of the time. Most of your kitchen appliances will be shockingly bad quality but hey, we're only paying £122 a week!
Stuck above Riley's with music all night and smokers right by your door. Communal area's never cleaned, washing machines often broken and my letter box was broken into and my post stolen and nothing was done after I reported it. Not worth the money at all.
On campus, 10 minutes from the city centre, within walking distance of all shops, really good atmosphere. The downside is that there is lots of traffic and hospital noise, plus the TV is on and off at times, I have enjoyed living here however depends on the other students you get put with, not enough room for socialising spaces. Need to improve on fire safety massively! (always freaks me out!)
Halls are overpriced in general. But standard for what you get.
There's no common room, you pay £114 which is okay . Cleaners came once during the year instead of at the end of every term so they were kinda uneccessary.
The walls are very thin which is annoying if your flatmates are noisy! Especially with your room next to the kitchen and sitting room! Also the TV does not work properly in any of the flats, people have complained about the TV signal and they just put signs up saying that they understood but we're not going to do anything, the fire alarms get set off a lot, and I've had multiple problems with the water here, however it's close to the university and the room space is a decent size.
Good access to teh university, but that is aboutit. In almost any other area a dissapointment and definately not worth the money spent.
Worst halls only good thing is the location ,overpriced ,staff horrible and unreliable , noisy ,small ,no parking
